we should reframe our thinking. it was not that they had to adapt due to the writers' strike, but that they had to adapt due to studios like Disney/ABC refusing to pay writers for their labor
Season 3 of Abbott has had a strong run of some of the best episodes. I would also recommend 'Smoking' where the staff struggle with the rules of what they can and cannot say to students and 'Willard R Abbott' where they try to find someone with the same name as the school who wouldn't be immediately cancelled, leading to Jacob pointing an accusing finger and yelling 'Where were you on January 6th?!'
That joke has so many layers. Calling Jacob dirty “Fleabag” + someone who runs from their problems “flee” + the slur “f@g” + if its a comparison to the character: someone who self-sabotages and struggles with relationships because of family trauma.
This show is just perfectly done and Tyler James Williams is one of my favorites loved him in Everybody Hates Chris and this show just showed how talented he is.
My wife started watching this during season 1 and it took me until season 3 to finally start watching. This show is so funny and the characters are so good
The new season has been non stop full of hilarious 😂 episodes with great character development. I’ve been sad because it’s been weeks since a new 🆕 episode.
One of the best shows none of my friends will ever watch, sucks watching a new episode and having to talk about it to the walls and the voices in my head😭😭
It's hard to pick a most perfect epidose of Abbott, because they're all so good. Like when Janine reveals she's only ever had one boyfriend, and Ava says, "So does that mean you're Mormon or something?" Janine: "No." Ava: "Well, maybe you should be, because you need more men." Hahahahaha....
What is it with some of yall in the comments acting like nobody has even heard of the show along with its "mid" or sucks? Its fair if you dont like it. But stop with this hyperbolic nonsense. Its been winning all the Emmys and even my family, who dont watch tv or care at all about pop culture stuff are hyped on this show.
I taught for 25 years, most of it in Title I schools, and this show’s humor and heart are grounded in reality. That’s the true genius of it. Of course it also has rich character development, intricate plotting, clever storytelling with nuanced jokes. The Halloween episode when they’re running around the school trying to find the candy-stealing bandit had me howling, as did the episode where they take the overnight field trip to the Franklin Institute and Ava gets the kids thinking about aliens, so when they see Barb in her sleep apnea mask the kids go wild.
@@Nerdstalgic yes, absolutely after the first season. It slowly goes off the rails with each season and it's beautiful. It's a short watch and ends strong.
@@Nerdstalgic for sure. The first season hit its end goal and so the seasons after are just insanity. The kids are all really good characters. Shame it wasn't bigger, but I think it was because it was SO weird and different.
I don’t want to bring negativity into a comment section that is generally filled with support for the show (which it deserves!!) but I feel like this season highlighted some negative parts of the storyline AND production of the show that I hope to see get resolved in the coming seasons. 1. The lack of transparency with episode releases was frustrating. If the show needed to meet a mid-May finale date then don’t start a 14 episode season in the beginning of February. Like? 2. Jeanine’s “district” plot line reinforces the stigma of climbing up out of the well and then pulling the ladder up with you. The writers showed us that no matter HOW good of an opportunity, the Abbott teachers are going to choose to stay at the bottom of the well with everyone else because that’s their family. This is an actual struggle that working class people feel when they start becoming successful and undermine their own success in order to try and take as many people that they love and care about with them. This should have never been a storyline on the show. You are allowed to put yourself first. 3. The celebrity guest stars cannot become a regular thing. It’s amazing how much reach this show has garnered in 3 seasons and I love it for the cast and crew, but it’s okay to say no. If there was a public school that had this many celebrity appearances in the real world it would be all over the news and Abbott wouldn’t be as poverty stricken as it currently is. It’s plot breaking. If a celebrity wants to make a cameo appearance maybe they should be able to act. I am open to critique on my opinions
1st point is not an issue to me personally so i cant really argue about it. 2. I am with you in the sense that janine’s return to abbott left a sour taste in my mouth. To me she was supposed to keep climbing up the ladder to be able to affect more change in the education system. However, from what I saw, the show did paint her reasoning as selfish (as in she put herself first). She didn’t care about kids in other schools. That was apparent when her boss told her that she needs to work on other schools and she became upset. She could have fully changed abbott (and other schools) but she chose comfort and working in job that makes her happy. 3. I grew up watching sitcoms with very unrealistic scenarios and plotlines. Its already unrealistic for this very poor school to have 3 broke artist filming a documentary for 3+ years with no revenue or gain. The celeb appearances are part of that imo and they are fun for me personally.
On the second point I think she just value her one on one relationships with her students than one from a office with very little interaction with kids
I agree with the celebrity cameos, they should either be a guest star, think Bruce Willis in friends, the one with Leslie Odom as the charter school guy was done very well.
i'm struggling with the post writer strike season and i bought it on prime😔 the cold openings have been hilarious but I'm having a hard time keeping up with the actors whining about their friendships and situationships. the one episode where jacob was complaining the friend group didn't read his emails was so draining.
To those above me acting like what was said is absolutely absurd. As it stands, 3 spectacular seasons. Beloved. Yeah, it has potential to be up there with Parks and Rec, The Office, etc. Maybe yall don't love it as much. And that's fine. But let's not pretend this show is only mid.
The Party is probably a stronger episode overall, but Breakup is still top-form. It would have been nice to hear Nerdstalgic talk more about Jacob evolving beyond his well-meaning but clueless white liberal origins to the more developed character he is at the time of the Breakup episode. But there is only so much ground you can cover in a short video essay I suppose.
My single critique of the show is that most of the School/District emphasized episodes seem like the Teacher's Union OK'd the plot points. They need to get into the grey areas more. Great Show and Actors.
This isn't the best episode, at all. It is just beginning of an amazing improvement this show has had on the 3rd season. Every episode it just gets better and funnier!
It's said multiple times that Jacob teaches 8th Grade (as well as Mr. Morton). Not every school system splits the years in the same way, K-8 schools (which are common in Philadelphia, where the show is set) often call themselves Elementary Schools. Although the name on the outside of the building just says "Willard R. Abbott Public School".
The only thing perfect is you putting it on a title but if every show has a perfect one then it’s kinda just for views so there’s also that the show is fine and that’s all it is
Show is overrated and getting an award don't mean the people really like it. A lot of that stuff is selected by the own media who is mainly the ones who give this people awards. So many greats don't have awards. Not every one who get award is cause is good but because they help the agendas . I mean this for everything on TV or streaming. Also music and anything mainstream. The best music is the underground mainstream sucks. But yet they still win more awards and make more money then some better artist. Not saying the show is bad. Just that is overrated. My opinion you don't have to agree with it. But I've seen the show and I usually laugh at anything anyone known me can tell but this show wasn't that funny . Is just okay. But I guess in this era since there's no creativity and all shows basically wack and comedy Is basically Dead I guess and okay show will be the best they have right now for a lot. Makes sense actually. Still overrated. Comparing it to the office not even close. Office felt natural . This feels as trying to hard. But we'll see if is really good it should have at least 11 seasons by the end. All great have more then 7 seasons at least 10 cause that's just that good. So we'll see how many seasons this get since creativity and comedy is more sensitive and less comedic now.
Definitely not their best episode. It’s one the episodes I completely forgot about until I saw someone make a video about it. Idk what their best episode is but this one is fine but mostly forgettable. Melissa and Janine’s storyline was just mean. When watching it for the first time I kinda zoned out during their parts cause it felt like they just needed something for those two to do. Also having Barb preform a religious song in a public school is questionable in levels of believablity as someone who is related to multiple teachers. I liked Ava’s progression, but almost everyone in this episode’s behavior was off putting the more I remember it. Maybe not Gregory and the janitor since I barely remember them in this
I see everywhere this is the best sitcom, but how? I barely could watch season 1 and thenI dropped it. The comedy of this show looks a lot like The Office in seasons 8 and 9. The romance is so forced predictable. So, can you tell when this show gets good?
You seem to be in the minority. Millions of people love it. Idk why you expect someone to sit down and explain its appeal. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, you simply can’t relate to the material. However, don’t expect people to educate you on its broad appeal. Just know that it’s beloved.
