  • Today I'm skidding logs for sawmill log bunks and I'll be showing you how to hook up logs to a tractor. I've done all kinds of rigging to tow logs with my tractor but this method is surely the easiest (and safest). With a simple 3 point hitch implement and some grab hooks, I quickly wrangle-up two long logs with my slip hook chain setup. If you are often skidding trees like I am, check out the extra angle iron I added to the top of my 3 point hitch setup to hold chain securely in place when not in use. Little touches like this sure make my life a lot easier and prevents the chain from sliding off and getting tangle in my tractor. While I'm talking about 3 point hitches, I can't help but feel thankful for the rear control level for my 3 point hitch on my 2012 Kioti DK40se HST. Without this rear remote level, I'd be going back and forth several times between the cab and the back of the tractor. Do yourself a favour, If you're getting a cab tractor, get one with a control lever at the rear of the tractor for your 3 point hitch. After successfully dragging my logs across some rough and wet terrain, I make it out to the sawmill where the sun is quickly setting. With the help of my stock headlights and worklights, I finish off a few grading details where I"ll be putting the log bunks. Check out how quick the task of removing debris and log rounds can be with a tractor like this one. Finally as darkness fully sets in, I call it quits. Next time be sure to tune in to see me build the log bunks using these two 14 foot long logs I dragged out to the woods today.

Glad to see you switched the hooks around so you wasn’t pulling against the point of the hooks. Keep on plugging away at it. Your making great progress
How many times do you stop working just to move the cameras for a different shot? I know it’s not easy to do all the time but I appreciate you getting the different footage for us. Makes for an awesome video. Thanks

Thanks Chris. I sure do move the camera a lot. Takes a while to get tasks done but that’s fine by me. I like to film the process.

Hi Sandy. Not sure where you are exactly but a friend of mine introduced me to a different style of hook last year. it is still a slip hook but it wont fall off the chain works very well ,infact i love it ... it is called a forestry slip hook or a "C" hook.

Get yourself a 3point lift boom rigged with a couple of chokers for skidding back to the mill. They are quick and safe and inexpensive, mine was @ $80. Bsafe

Good day to you Sandy. Yup, nice weather and (still) day time light to take advantage from before....... very nice trails and forest you have. I'm wondering; have you ever tried to use only one chain when dragging two trunks, making an 8 with the chain around the two trunks? It saves time and the 8 used in conjunction with a slip hook (I prefer ring) makes it self-tightening. I often use only one chain with a double 8 when I need to drag 3 trunks. Always a pleasure to look at your video (do not make version 2.0 sawmill shack to look too nice or it will become too nice to work :-D ) Cheers

Good idea with the chain setup I’ll have to give it a try. I’ll quit adding onto the sawmill shack too hate to overdue it and make it too nice to work haha hope all is well

Those are great looking work pants. Are they new? What brand are they? They look like they would slide easily over your Dunlop rubber boots too when you break them out for the upcoming winter season. Would be good to see the two of them worn together in your next video. I might have to get myself a pair too!

Pants just haven't made their way out of the closet for a while. They are old as the hills I think. The Dunlop's are coming out soon with the upcoming snow that's for sure.

Very nice Sandy ; you have become my Saturday morning ritual , I get up around 5:00am slip out to Tim’s for a Coffee , return home and turn on You Tube. Couple of questions or observations.. Why rev the tractor at what sounds like a high RPM when traveling / working it.. Maybe I am old school and because my tractor is an older gear / clutch set up, I tend to keep the RPMs as low as possible, and adjust as required with the foot petal.
Have you considered building a Log Arch and moving logs with your ATV.. I hate pulling logs through mud and built a relatively small arch that can pick up a 14 inch 12’ log completely off the ground.. The arch works great for bringing pine out of the bush. Especially if you’re talking low volume production.
    Keep the videos coming!

Sounds like a great morning Routine. I’m actually enjoying a nice coffee as we speak 😀. For the revs on the tractor the manufacturer recommends using the tractor at a specific rpm which may be higher than some others. I can’t quite remember the reason behind it but I’d have to look it up. Good idea about the atv log arch. I do actually have one but I have to repair it with a bit of welding. May end up converting it to use behind my snowmobile in winter. Hope all is well with you

Hi Sandy, this is Andy from BC.
As a teenager I worked on a potato farm in England. 4 or so of us drove equipment picking up the sacks of spuds and weighing them and getting them ready for sale. One major event stays in my mind and I want to share it. We got a tractor stuck in mud, we hooked a chain to it to pull it out. Problem was we hooked it to the top link on the pull tractor, as my buddy dropped the clutch, the whole front end went up in the air and as fast as you can think, the tractor was on top of him! The stearing wheel was wrapped around his head, a couple of tough farmhands took the weight off him while I ran to the farm house for the fork lift and to call for help. He survived
I know the logs are not that heavy but I'm always nervous when I see chains up high, the center of gravity has been raised. We do it all the time with the front bucket, fully loaded with gravel no less, just a small change in ground levels can give you the feeling of a tractor going over! I'm now in my mid 60's still riding tractors and also have the HM130 mill, and just finished my shed over the mill. Just be careful in all that you do, too many experienced farmers have lost their lives or caused severe injuries.

Thanks for passing that info along Andy. Nice to hear good folks like yourself out there looking out for me. I’ll definitively keep that in mind moving forward when I’m hooking up heavy loads. Take care and thanks again
