With more than eighty different recordings since it was written for "Babes in Arms" in 1937, this beautiful ballad is a typical example of the craftsmanship from Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart. Harry James' band (the first big band to incorporate a string section) and the marvelous Miss Ward are perfection. Note the cleverly-inserted quote near the end from the melody to "A Dreamer's Holiday" (1949), made famous in a recording that year by Perry Como.

I always find it to be a real treat to find rarities. Helen Ward was not Harry James' usual female vocalist, it was Helen FORREST. Helen WARD normally sang for Benny Goodman, so it's neat that Harry James was able to acquire her for a few rare song selections that are quite difficult to find. If you don't mind, I'd like to pass on a Video Response to this to share with you -- another rare selection from James and Ward called "Daddy", from 1941.

Finally got an original 78 copy of "Daddy"! I know I already had the song posted from a CD, but I just had to also post the original 78!
