This was really helpful, thank you !! :)) We are going through Mead's theory on "The Self" right now, and as much as I love Sociology I was having a hard time with the readings.

Glad to help! Also check out my five minute sociology playlist which has a lot of Mead’s work covered.

    Hey sir,
cheers for putting this lecutre out to the masses as it has really helped me. i am a current 3 rd year srtudying counselling coaching and mentoring in the uk. SO for my disseration i want to look into how follwing celebraties onlines affects young adults sense of self and this lecture gave me the light bulb that celebraties are the generalized other in modern day genderations, we do, act and behave based on the way celebraties do online ie you go into a shop and see a jumper lady gaga wore for example and your more likely too grab in or you know ed sheeran is famous for his guitar playing so you entroll on guitar courses with the aim of becoming famous like him . I think the generalised other becomes someone we aspire to be like and for a lot of youths today they aspire to be famous and to have people remeber them when they go as with social media it is a lot easier to become famous than back in the day .

So excited to hear this! It’s a cool way of applying the idea and helps us think about how we construct our identities through information on what others (both constructed and real) suggest we should be. I’d love to hear an update as you continue working through this.
