This makes me so sad. I was here in 1987 and the bay was beautiful and full of fish. It was the first time I ever went snorkeling. They sold bags of frozen peas to feed the fish. We were so careful not to touch the coral. There were a lot of people monitoring the reef to make sure no one was injuring anything. I remember this area more than anywhere else we went. Keep doing what you are doing by bringing awareness to the damage we do. I knew about the sunscreen, but I doubt many do. 🐟🐠🐡

Why was there a need to shame a tourist by recording behind his back and commenting on his outfit? Also unpleasant to see you making unnecessary comment to people that's just trying to have fun on their trip. From the look of this, it looks like the Hanauma Bay is confusing and unorganized and I agree with the previous comment on they could have a check-point to make sure people are wearing reef- safe sunscreen. Part of the problem is the tourists, but also part of the problem is also Hanauma Bay not educating these tourists.
Like you mentioned, the video showed AFTER they were already inside or mentioned nothing about what sunscreen to use. There are so many ways the Bay could have done to prevent this. By only letting locals in is not the answer, yes tourists should be more away but the Bay also need to step up their game in educating and protecting this gem.
I agree shaming people is not the answer here. Educating & perhaps selling the correct sunscreen people would be more than happy to protect the reefs.

yeah, he talks like he is so stuck up about every little item, trying to differentiate himself as more important than other non islanders or tourists as a pride or ego thing. the simple fact is many people I know have worked and make a darn good living working tourism on the islands and are very thankful for tourists. yes, there are issues that need to be corrected but unfortunately the people like this make islanders seem stuck up or hateful of non islanders which in most cases is very untrue. he needs to be less stuck up about his opinions and learn what helpful education is.
I agree Scott. Came off as really arrogant. Whats wrong with the “typical tourist” carrying a backpack? We’re told not to leave things in the car and he was probably carrying all the things he needs for later in that backpack. Why make gun of his clothes? Made fun of people ignoring the “parking lot full” sign yet they themselves ignore the sign to no go past buoy. I watched with my jaw dropped at how he talked so bad about the people around him. Wow.

Here is a guy who publishes loads of content snorkeling around reefs and catching fish calling out "tourists" for doing the same. A bit too hypocritical. You can raise awareness without taking on the moral authority and putting literally everyone around you down.

I can completely empathize with you in this situation. My husband and I always pick up garbage on any trail that I walk on. It is so frustrating being around others who don't care as much as you do. I'm sending an air hug you and Brittany's way!

Thanks for caring so much about the reefs and cleaning them up! My BC has an unfolding mesh pocket that I use to collect trash when I dive. I'm always happy when I dive someplace where there is no trash, but unfortunately that's not often. OTOH, sometimes I come back with so much trash that my pocket is full....usually in areas closer to piers and beaches. It's shocking what people will throw into the ocean. When I dove the pier in St. Croix in November, I found a ton of trash including a fully intact lowball glass! I gave that to the dive shop owner. Also great info on the sunscreen. I thought that Hawaii had passed a law regarding sunscreen, but I guess they can't stop people from bringing in the bad stuff. Hopefully more people will move toward wearing rash guards/SPF swim clothing rather than so much sunscreen.
To those that are criticizing Shanger's attitude about the visitors, I know how frustrating it is to watch people do things that destroy the reef, but not have any recourse. People are not open to being educated by a random stranger on the beach. If you say something, the reply is usually "well it's just a little bit". Except that it's NOT...it's lots of people who either don't know or don't care. The most frequent comment I hear is that reef safe sunscreen is too expensive. Really? You flew all the way to Hawaii (or wherever), but won't spend $2-3 extra dollars on an environmentally safe sunscreen? His feelings are how I feel when I'm diving and come across other divers, swimmers, snorkelers literally standing on the reef. Yes, lots of natural bleaching and damage occurs - that's normal - but we humans don't need to aid the destruction with unnecessary chemicals when there are alternatives readily available.

My first snorkel experience was here and I fell in love. I was so sad to not be able to visit when we were there last summer but certainly understand. Thank you for spreading the word about sunscreens!
Just watched this vlog a year after posting it. I was in the USAF Reserve stationed for 2 weeks at Hickman AFB in 1980 and I went snorkeling there and it was beautiful with all the various fish, it was like swimming in an aquarium! I'm so sorry that it has turned out the way it has after all these years. Love your vlogs!

Been living here for 57 years... thank you for not advertising! Hanama Bay was awesome when you could feed the fish....before they said to stop. There were so many fish in those days. Huge. colorful fish everywhere

Good thing when we went to Hanauma Bay there was no traffic. Always go on a weekday and off season. I can't believe people find it so difficult to get reef safe sunscreen, I got it on Amazon, it's so easy to do! I have snorkeled at way better places, I was upset. The main thing I liked about the Bay, was the beach, it's gorgeous, and that's the main thing worth coming here for.
Really! In my days, Hanauma Bay was a safe beach. We never went beyond the breakers and stayed on the beach mostly. Things may have changed a bit. We had to walk down, no roads. Coca Cola was ten cents a bottle, double the normal price.
Coming to Hawaii for the first time in June and this sounds like the last place I want to head. Definitely will not be going there. I screen shot your sunscreen recommendations so that I can order some ocean safe stuff! Thank you for reminding us to care for our earth.

So sad at the condition of the bay. We went many time in the early 80's, the reefs were so beautifil and packed with fish. You were allowed to feed them back then, and when you did you would be surrounded by hundreds of fish. I hope it comes back so people can see it as I did. And yes, the water was crystal clear then.

I live in Colorado & so many times watched in horror as hikers visiting Hanging Lake fed obese chipmunks, took selfies on the log (next to a sign asking people to stay off said log) & littered SO many plastic water bottles, food wrappers and dog shit bags ( though no dogs allowed) I used to go semi frequently but had to stop as the stress of seeing people actively destroying such a magical place was heartbreaking. Fortunately in the last few years the park’s service set up system to only allow a certain amount of visitors at a time & I think they charge a fee now as well.

I went to Bali once me and my family took a tour there and we stopped at a very beautiful place to dive/snorkel the coral was strong, colourful and that kind of stuff there where also allot of fish. Idk how it’s doing now because i went there 3 years ago and i forgot the name :>

I went to Hanauma Bay in 1989 and it was way more beautiful. It looks a little over developed now and I don't remember the video welcome centre. Might be a good idea for them to close it completely a couple years?

1986 was the last time I was in the bay. I snorkeled way out before they had the safety buoys to remind and prevent you from being pulled out. We were allowed to feed the fish mostly crackers and to never touch the coral plus watch out for sharks and barracudas. We had no safety or environmental briefings but just signs to tell us the dangers and cautions around the bay and beach. Being from Huntington Beach Calif., I had great respect for the area. Just sad the area went downhill so quickly but a very slow climb back up.

In 1991 the reef was still beautiful. I remember swimming with sea turtles. However, the amount of Japanese tourists that walked all over the reef was ridiculous. Other tourists as well. But tour buses of Japanese in groups of 30 or more had no regard for the rules. I returned 20 years later and the reef wasn’t recognizable. I agree with you. Close it down and after it rebounds open it only to Hawaiians.
I went to Hanauma bay in 2018 and it was magical, probably the high point of my entire trip. The amount of fish of all types was really cool. I also saw the parrot fish (if you're quiet you can hear them chomping on the coral) and a number of other fish, plus these odd little fish that would swim vertically just beneath the surface of the water. You couldn't see them from above the water but as soon as you put your mask into the water, there they were. Before entering the bay, we had to watch a video on the fragility of the coral reef and it made me so mad when I actually went snorkeling to see how many people were simply standing in their fins on the reef, absolutely ignoring everything we had JUST learned in the video. I heard that the next year they made the reef open only a few days a week to help protect it. I don't blame them.
I disagree, however, that only Hawaiians should be allowed to visit the reef. But I do think they should fine the crap out of anyone who disrespect the rules, and have big signs posting the fine amount and that there are monitors in the water (whether there are or not).
I totally recommend the wet suit. The year I went it was a beautiful sunny day and quite warm by my standards (I'm from Alaska) and I saw this person suiting up in a wet suit and I sort of internally chuckled at them. I think it was about 80 degrees that day. But after spending a couple hours in the water, I began to get really chilled and wished I'd had the wet suit. By the time I got out of the water I was shivering violently and even sitting in the sun wasn't warm enough, I had to go change into dry clothes (it was a little breezy so there was some convection cooling going on, too).
If u explode the reef and the rock are like a 10 feet away it won't harm it but it depends the dynamite and also the reef grows but it doesn't grow with pollution and also it depends how badly the damage was for the reef to grow or not
So I'm a scuba diver and I've never freedove or used my fins honestly other than when I am fully geared. I'm not really what most would classify as a 'strong swimmer', I'd say "I can swim" if someone asked if I am a good swimmer so I'm just curious do you ever get tired while being out and not having any flotation device? Ik a wetsuit helps you stay more buyont and all so I'm curious if you are treading water very hard when you're out that far and deep or are your fins saving a lot of energy?

I didn't know there was reef save sunscreen nor did even think that was a thing. What if apply like banana boat stuff, let it dry and then wet yourself down to get rid of the excess, does that still effect the reef?

@@andrewrooney3286 I think he means well but making fun of how people dress isn't helping anything. The bay is managed by very knowledgeable people, and the video's song literally sings, "don't tread on me, don't step on the reef." It's also very click-baity to call it the "deadliest beach on Oahu." You have to be hundreds of yards outside of the reef to be in any danger of being swept out. I'm a visitor to family there since the 90s and while the shore side of the reef shows from where most people go, the outside is relatively the same as I've always seen it. If the visitor education material doesn't mention sunscreen, he should bring it to managements attention and not place blame on just visitors. The position of the bay naturally gathers some trash from the open ocean and if you see any, help to collect it and throw it away. The video came across and a little soap-boxy, and harsh to visitors to me. It's a great and safe place to visit by following directions, and super calm for beginners to get comfortable snorkeling. Management is protecting the bay by limiting the amount of people that can visit so plan ahead.
I know how you feel about nature and people destroying nature’s beautiful place’s. I hate it when when people litter and destroy nature, one time I was at the pool and someone littered. So, I went to pick it up and tell them kindly not to litter. And yes I know you might be thinking I’m a Karen for going and confronting them but, I love nature so I couldn’t reazist.
Twenty years ago this was a cool dive, dove it several times on a SCR rig so i could practically dive to the limits of the tables. Best to navigate out from shore, find the telecom pipe and head out, it this is still allowed. Watch your compass so you’ll be able to navigate back on a reciprocal heading. Only do this on a higher or rising tide or you’ll be dragging yourself over rock/coral. Hanauma Bay gets pretty deep toward the mouth and the current is quite strong, especially at the bottom. If you’re not aware and paying attention, you could be on your way to Molokai, and you pick up the tab for ocean rescue.

First off, I appreciate you 2 for all that you do helping clean up our beaches and waters. Second, thank you for making this video and being so concerned for the sunscreen especially. I honestly thought that that video at the bay told you not to step on the reef but the last time I’ve been there was probably in the early 2000’s.
But I’m not too sure if you know a lot about uhu, but they are hermaphrodites. They can change from a female to a male. And to every harem, there’s one male and multiple females. The distinction between them are their color; red=female and blue=male. I’m not too sure exactly how long it takes for a female to transition but I know it takes a long time. There are males that start off as males in the beginning of their life and there are also females that stay females to the ending of their lives. With that said, there are more females than there are males. I know that a lot of divers who go spear fishing for uhu would most likely shoot the males (sometimes because of its color or just because it’s the first one they find). But please, catch the female instead of the males. ❤️💙

I love that you think you are such an expert that you can just tell from the smell and packaging that EVERYONE is using the wrong sunscreen. dude you aren't that special no way you can tell that shit unless you actually read it. If they bought it in Hawaii I guarantee it's reef safe. We knew about it before coming so we didn't pack any from home. But you are some "sunscreen expert" but not actually trying to tell anyone it's bad just assuming they are using the wrong kind and judging them on a video.
I am born and raised in Hawaii and I used to go to Hanauma Bay in the 80s. I remember how beautiful it was back then, but I do also remember how I ran into a piece of someone's doodoo while I was swimming as a kid. yup, even back then it was still kind of polluted. When I lived on the Big Island, I preferred to swim at Puako and Two-Step mostly. The whole west coast is amazing to swim in actually.

I understand the desire to protect the environment, and I definitely find those who are self righteous and entitled to be beyond annoying, but you can not discriminate against non Hawaiians. That’s a violation of federal civil rights laws as well as the “equal protection” clause of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.
As for the sunscreen - it’s not just sunscreen that uses only mineral UV blocking agents, including zinc or titanium oxide. It should also be noted that size of the particles in the sunscreen also matters. Even with zinc or titanium oxide “nano-sized” particle suspensions can be damaging to the reef (you want “micro particles”). Note that sprays and mists are usually not reef safe, even if they only contain mineral UV blocking agents. Also make sure there are no “micro plastic” agents in the lotion which are often listed as “exfoliating beads”. The term “reef safe” on the packaging is not regulated so you can’t rely on that always being true.

Lived on sailboat when i was a teenager, sailed the Yucatán straights, think the best place I went was sleeping shark cave in Mexico, but remember seeing parrot fish everywhere but couldn’t eat them , don’t remember why , there diet was eating the reef but incredible looking fish . They had like flat square teeth 🦷, so would imagine there different there . Amazing the conservation y’all have for the ocean, it’s the most beautiful place on earth!

okay ik your talking abt how it's like really bad to be using sunscreen and throwing trash at the beach etc. but if and when you go shopping and you use plastic bags when shopping then, how could you say things abt using sunscreen and throwing trash is bad when you use plastic yourself. if you don't then yay you are helping to keep the sea alive✨🐬🦀Also to who ever else is reading this rn, please do not do the following things i have said in this comment. and also DO NOT use plastic bags.
