Very cool video Dave!!! I recognized the song, one of my favorites, nice!!! I'm wondering though, you showed how you do automation and if I'm not mistaken this was only done on your VCA faders, is that correct? Do you ever automate on the individual channels or group channels, master fader? I'm thinking about your template too. I'm not doing anything with Atmos at this time, and I'm not totally convinced the industry will standardize on it, but is it the same template you use when mixing music? In other words, did you use the same template for this video? I've seen a several of your videos and I really appreciate your channel. Thanks so much!!! Blessings...
Great questions. I'd say when I'm mixing, I'm doing 80-85% on the VCA's. A good example of where I might drill down to individual channels would be for a blend of background vocals if someone starts popping out in a section. Sometimes I might want to just push an individual part of the drum kit as well or maybe even pull it back. And then FX returns get individual rides all the time. The Atmos template I sell was built from scratch for a video and is very similar to the one I use. The one I use is effectively a modified version of the one I sell with a little more complexity than even I probably need.
@@goingto11 Thanks Dave!!! That's pretty much what I do in terms of automation, very similar to what you described although I picked up a couple things from your demo. I'm always learning new things. I believe that automation is key to a great sounding mix!!! Once quick question regarding automation. In addition to Pro Tools, I also have Cubase Pro 13. Cubase has a menu option that allows you to "Show All used Automation". I can never remember everywhere I have automated something and this will show you on the edit screen where you have used automation. I haven't found anything in Pro Tools that does this. Do you know if there is anything like this anywhere in Pro Tools where you can show all used automation? As for your template, I'm not quite ready to take the Atmos plunge yet so I'm wondering if your template will be beneficial for someone primarily doing stereo music mixes? I'm a drummer and mixer and have been doing this for maybe 10 years with various worship groups in my area and for my church. It would be interesting to see how you group things, your routing etc, fx, and anything else to get the overall picture of what and how you do things in Pro Tools. A mix breakdown would be interesting as Musictron suggested.
If you hold option and press the minus key, you should see the automation lanes on every track. Aside from that, I'm not sure if there's a quick way to see what has automation--there might be one, but I don't ever think about it. I know Tom Lord-Alge only turns automation on for a track that he has put automation on, so that's another way to do things, but it's not my workflow. If all you're going to do is stereo mixing, I don't think the template will necessarily be beneficial. You can do stereo mixing with it because it's designed for mixing Atmos and Stereo at the same time, but if you don't want the Atmos side, I'm not sure if it would be useful. I'm thinking about how to do a mix breakdown at some point. In the meantime, I know there are videos here on the channel that might get into some of the routing and grouping kinds of things.
@@goingto11 Thanks for the option-minus key shortcut. I have used that before. That's great when you are doing volume automation like you demonstrated here but unfortunately it doesn't show you every place automation has been used in a project. I'll have to do some more research on that one. Perhaps it's a feature request that needs to be made. I have usually done automation like you demonstrated here but I wasn't familiar with the various automation modes/options you used. I've done it like Tom Lord-Alge too where I sometimes only automate things that need to be automated but because sometimes things get changed by accident, I've been doing as you do with the initial automation to mark the starting point of everything. Great minds think alike! Workflow is one of the reasons I watch videos like this and look at different people's templates. There has always been something that others have done that I never thought of or just another way of doing things that may or may not be better than what I'm already doing. That's part of the reason I was interested in your template. I have not done anything in Atmos but I have also not really experienced it. I hear lots of people talking about it and how wonderful it is but I guess I just really need to experience it. I really need to learn more about it anyway and so I did buy your template. You're right, in the short term it may not have anything that will help me mixing stereo music projects but it did give me some insight into how you do your Atmos mixes. I'm sure that knowledge will come in handy when I take the Atmos plunge. I'd love to see a mix breakdown. Again these are very interesting to watch to see how others are doing things and their workflow. You still can teach an old dog new tricks!!! lol... Blessings...
Hi Dave. Rather than using write mode to lock in your initial fader levels, have you tried the Edit > Automation > Write to Current/All Enabled command?
@@goingto11 Not if you use the Write to All Enabled command, it'll write a breakpoint to whatever is enabled in the automation window, no need to show the automation lane. The All group needs enabled to get the cursor across all tracks. Give it a try, you might find it to be more efficient.
Best videos on you tube for learning immersive and related panning - automation techniques. No mumbo jumbo or arrovance.
Thanks! I appreciate hearing that.
Man wow this sounds great… I’d love to see a mix breakdown PLEASE!!!!
Thanks!

I don't think I have because I think you have to have all the volume lanes shown and some kind of selection.
