Thank you for taking the time to help us. I'm a fiction author working on my first memoir. I got something happening next Spring and I need my first draft done by end of summer. FML 😆 Structuring this puppy is a beast! It has two themes- child abuse and suicide. It's easy to weave the two but it's so difficult opening my book. I still can't find that one line to start with a boom!

Thank you, I have learnt a lot and I only heard about this now after 5 years after you did it...I'm editing my memoir at the moment.

Grad student starting a memoir as part of my thesis but couldn't get into the memoir class this semester. Wanted to brush up ahead of my first advisory meeting and this was so much more than I bargained for...and now I have my structure in mind, a thousand thanks!!

Very helpful. You mention prologue. I get the impression by many that prologues are out of fashion, yet they seem very appropriate for memoir. I'm using one so I'm relieved to hear your take on it.

They're definitely not out of fashion for memoir. Good luck!

Thank you for the much needed information and direction. I'm still sorting through a good number of tutorials and info that I'm using from the internet to guide me through the memoir writing process. I would like to be finished with my first draft manuscript by Dec. 31, 2022.(Best case scenario is before then) I was having trouble with the structure and transitioning from scene to scene. I am in the initial phase of writing, having only about 7,000 words finished or 11 pages. I've been told that I am writing linearly and telling more than showing. I hope to correct this and create a body of work that is engaging for the reader. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for posting this webinar. I always search for "formulas" depicting how creative nonfiction should be structured, as if it were a math formula. I think there is at least one essay published by Brevity on this.

Thank you for posting this RUclips. Tons of good information! You speak of Wild and the “Get Wild”. I see on your website Wild by Cheryl Strayed, a CD + transcript. 4 hours of content. I’m curious what I can expect to know once I review the four-session course. I’m very diligent with how I allocate my time and don’t want to buy this if it’s not something that I can use. That said Wild is 100% my favorite book of all time and I’d be so thrilled to learn more about that writing style.

There are huge moments in every year of my life, so I've started my book from the point when I was born
