Doggystyle was the 1st CD album I bought when i was a kid. That album turnt me out. My favorite tracks are "pump pump", "g'z & hustla'z", "lodi dodi", etc. Truthfully it is a classic, you can listen top to bottom, no skips. I was born in 91 and I just went back and listened to the 90's when the 2000's artists was going crazy.
Ye man Will Smith was releasing some bangers back then too, records like, 'Homebase' under the name of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Man them dudes were really hip and cool back then. The real life 'Boyz in da Hood!'
My older Step-Brother recorded me a tape of this album. Listened to it non-stop. My Mother took my walkmen and gave it a listen. Upon returning home she punched me in the face repeatedly. And kicked me three times while I was on the ground. I was grounded for the rest of the Summer. I was 10. NO repercussions for my 14 yr old step brother who gave it to me. He was my Stepdad's kid and she didn't wanna fuck with her meal ticket. I'm a hip hop artist till this very day. I don't speak with my Mother anymore.
Fun Fact: In 2013, Snoop revealed that he's never listened to ‘Doggystyle’ top to bottom. He further added that he hasn't listened to any of his projects all the way through
It's a bonafide classic and a game changer for Rap music. It doesn't matter what you may think about Snoop you cant deny that this record isn't one of the greatest debut albums of all time. You did it again man. Another amazing episode.
I was 16 years old in '93 I can definitely agree with this I'm from Brooklyn NY that was the first west Coast album that got major airplay here on hot 97 and every car driving pass playing a different track from that album the only time I seen anything like that was when The Wu dropped 36 Chambers that same year & '94

My older sister was listening to hip hop and gave me and my older brother the cds. and we loved this album when it came out. West coast rap was very popular amongst my friends at this time. great time!!!
Never heard it before making this video due to its absence from the album for years. DEFINITELY one of the best Snoop songs that I've ever heard. His flow, the sample, the beat, etc. I'm glad the sample finally got cleared

Doggystyle was the very first rap tape I ever bought with money I saved up myself when I was 11 years old. I used to listen to that tape front to back not ff a single song or skit, and it had some classic skits
I was a 10 year old kid, living in a small town in england, when this dropped. I remember a family friend rocking up blaring it out and i was instantly hooked. I managed to steal the tape, re-record it and get it back thinking i was slick. The bloke noticed and eventually bought me a copy. This album introduced me to Rap, Westcoast Rap and most importantly, G Funk rap. It’ll always have a place in my heart but i actually think Snoops ‘Tha Last Meal’ is his best piece. Great Documentary fella, enjoyed the listen.

I was in the 9th grade. The album came out during a home basketball game. All of my friends left the stands to go listen t o the album. We had to wait for someone to buy us copies, and that peson had to go to Camelot Records, get copies, then drop them off at the school.
This isbthe album that Drink Champs need to compare with Illmatic. The anticipation on both was palpable and this was only matched by the fact that both albums delivered what we were all waiting for. You can still listen to both of them all the way through 30 years later and still be like that was an unreal debut.
The chronic was cool sitting in the back of my dad's car, but doggystyle in my walk man was the first true album that made my head explode as a thirteen year old youngsta learned this album from front to back. Snoops vocals are indeed in my DNA!!!!

Im not even 19 yet but i stay educated on historic music. The first time i listened this album i was like wow i felt like i got teleported to 1993, i was amused by the samples that were made from this album such as the intro for ready to die by Notorious big, but yeah overall i love this album and i still listen to it along with other 90s albums.
I loved this album. I remember my dad bought it for me on a road trip we took from Virginia to Gary, Indiana in 1993. While playing it, which is crazy on a family road trip my mother at the time was sleep, but woke up during one of those songs took out that cassette tape and chucked it off the window. I was heartbroken, but I eventually purchased another. I’ll never forget that. 🐾
In my opinion this album is my main argument why hip hop is the reason why it became so fully mainstream and that even white people could start listen to rap publicly, The Chronic set off the tone from what was coming with it literally being on the the most played hip hop songs for 2 years straight and eventually being one of the best songs ever produced & created. Doggystyle hit the peak, the rollout, the production, the video clips literally anything about this album Got a good mix of being great not only in the rap game but also In music history
That would be Eminem imo, many ppl that are not even into the rap demographic are listening to rap when they listen to Eminem. Eminem filled that space. Gangsta Rap was charting mainly because of white teenagers buying the music but i think on a larger scale Eminem is what really pushed rap music a few decades in. - Tupac most iconic, Raps Elvis figure the first Rapper to do many milestones, eg one being the first rapper to have a double pressed cd go platinum. I think this was ever too not just for rap but over all music genres. - Eminem the one that really put the genre as a main stay genre globally, him and 50 cent together represent the black and white coming together. - NWA the poster children for Gangsta rap on the westcoast. - Ice T a real OG probably even more so than NWA. Comes from a time where there was no grassroot ventures and you had to be directly signed to Warner. Warner bros being the OG for entertainment its at the top of the umbrella. Ice T also got some footage with the classic WB logo in some of his works which i would say is rare no other rapper has that. Time Warner today is the music division of WB but we are talking like iconic logo loony tunes etc. The rest in their lanes for their own reasons.
Im from Portland. I was in 4th grade. It was a vibe. Snoop was on top if the world. We all rocked kakis with chucks back then. Fig flannels 😂. I had a little jerry curl too. Gangbanging was huge back then. Anything that Snoop touched was gold back then. He was tge face of the West Coast sound, style, lingo, etc. The weed leaf was a bold statement back then too because it was still illegal and not socially acceptable. Snoop was very open about smoking weed back then. To the point of where they slowly started showing it on tv, or at least implying it. It was a time.

My fav outta those has to be Smoke On, Every Single Day, Doggystyle (Intro) and Big Bitches. Happy that Gz Up, Hoez Down is finally on streaming but it sucks that the original 1993 version of Tha Next Episode has yet to be released officially but oh well Btw you should've mentioned that Snoop and Dre are apparently working on a new album together, a sequel to Doggystyle called Missionary. Talks about it were going around for a while but I think they officially announced it on a interview with Jimmy Fallon, if I'm not mistaken. Either way like I said, great vid!
In 93 you couldn’t go anywhere without this cd / tape playing in the deck , streets , house party’s. It was so huge , I mean the chronic was still kind of new but just starting to quiet down . This was a banger track after track and reined supreme until eazy-e answered with the real mufugin Gz album , then that took its place , warren G got hella play too

It's always insane when people try to discredit Dr. Dre as a producer. When Dre left Ruthless Cold187 couldn't do what Dre did even tho he said Dre took credit for beats. When Dre Left Death Row, Daz, Warren G or any of those other dudes failed to do what Dre did despite both (Especially Daz) saying Dre took beats from them. Dre has carried his sound for all these years, and its crazy people will try to discredit that. Fun Fact: People say Metro Boomin only does the drums now adays too. Producers just ain't piano players lol

You can also see how far Dre has come from as a producer/beat maker on this album. In the early days of N.W.A you can see it had a lot of fun dmc, east coast influence with just more funk in it. Then on the last NWA album “Niggaz4Life” it had a lot of reggae and funk in it with instruments and barley any samples. Then The Chronic had all of it in 1 one with the G Funk and 70s Samples and with more singers on it like Jewell and Nate dogg. Then On doggystyle it was straight funk but then with hip hop influence in my opinion, the hooks, the chorus, and the way the songs are produced this really feels like a funk album with some hip hop influence. And in my opinion Who am I (what’s my name) is Dre’s best beat
Salute and great work. I enjoyed that piece and you did some good research on this album. I have some more interesting fun facts, info, and a few corrections to add on to this video. First of all, that's not George Clinton on the song "Doggystyle". That's actually bass player Tony "Money" Green aka T. Green. He's the one that connected George with Dr. Dre and Snoop. Once the connection happened, Dre produced the "G-Funk Intro" to replace "Doggystyle" and they also did the remix to "Let Me Ride". The song "Doggystyle" was originally going to open the album. That's Nancy Fletcher, Jewell (RIP), and T. Green Dre really did produced the album. Daz and Emanuel Deen (RIP) were some of the musical players including beat making that collaborated with Dre. They were not producers at that point. Dre put that together. He produced it. Snoop confirmed that several times over the years. Even Daz changed his tune regarding claims of not getting production credit for that album. Chris "The Glove" Taylor is another collaborator in making that album. The production for What's My Name (Who Am I) was created same time (possibly same session) for the production of what later became "Can't C Me" by 2Pac. That production was originally for Dre & Ice Cube's Helter Skelter (unreleased project). Hints the similarly in the beat pattern with "What's My Name" and "Can't C Me". That's Chris "The Glove" Taylor on "What's My Name" on Vocoder and that's Nancy Fletcher singing near the end of the song. The song "D.A.V.E" was later given to Bow Wow for possible usage on the Murder Was The Case soundtrack. It's possible that The D.O.C may be a co-writer on the unreleased "Tha Next Episode". I tried to get D.O.C to address it more but, he didn't confirm nor deny it. Yet, he let it be known that you can hear sprinkles of The D.O.C in some of Snoop's work at that time. (Also) Dre produced that song, not Warren G. Although that sample & loop came from Warren G (same thing goes for Gz & Hustlerz, I think that was from Dre's record collection), Dre flipped those ideas and produced those songs. Warren was one of a few at the time that bought vinyl records for Dr. Dre as well as others from his production team to use as samples for cuts (scratches/DJ), loops, etc. Hints why Warren was able to use the exact loop for his own song & his own production a year later (Runnin' With No Brake, 1994). The same thing with that sample for Gz & Hustlaz but, that loop was later used for Warren's production work for 2Pac. It was the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards when Snoop performed Murder Was The Case. The 1993 MTV VMAs saw Snoop appear as a presenter with Dr. Dre & George Clinton. Snoop was on the run for that murder (he was later acquitted) when he made that appearance. There's an interesting story behind that 93 VMA appearance.😎🫡

It was stolen from the car, went to buy another one and it was still there, 2nd one, I believe someone stole it from me, someone I knew. Bought a 3rd Doggystyle album and G'z Up Hoez Down was gone!! There is absolutely no way THAT was done in 48 hours. I think Dre would've never released it knowing how much of a perfectionist he is. If that was done in 48 hours the god damn Dre must be sitting on MULTIPLE classics. Because the Mixing and Beats on Doggy Style where like nothing else at the time. I wasn't alive (lol) but if you play Doggystyle and then Illmatic and Ready To Die. You see the difference in mixing and production almost instantly and those albums didn't release far between each other

I remember this album was the shit. Always played in peoples cars and at parties or gatherings. I was so young when it came out (12-13) but had friends with older brothers n sisters. Was already a big rap fan but this album made me become nothing but a rap fan.
Oh yeah (if I'm not mistaken), that's Hen Dog (RIP) and Snoop's cousin Joe Cool on that skit/interlude to Murder Was The Case that Dre produced. Also, (if I'm not mistaken) Chris "The Glove" Taylor mixed some of those songs on the Doggystyle album including "Doggy Dogg World".
Weirdly, I don't really remember buying this album. I remember loving G Funk Intro, M***** Was the Case and Gz and Hustlas. A couple of friends really got into the west coast thing but I was and still am an east coast girl. I liked that raw Hip-Hop that was about beats and spitting and videos were just heads on the street. But I did like this album a lot. But I've been transferring thousands of songs to a new PC (30,000+ already. At least another 20,000 to go) and was swapping the MP3 version of this with a flac and damn this is a good album. It must be twenty-five years since I listened to any of it. I just wish I could have played it louder. The real surprise is that I only just got around to checking Lady of Rage and her album is a banger! The girl could spit!

Wow... went back to re-listen to this album - and for some strange reason - IT SOUNDS SOO MUCH BETTER in 2024 than I remember it back when it first came out. Back then, this whole entire album was an anthem - but it just sounds soo MUCH BETTER! I guess it's because of the fresh insight - thanks to this RUclips video. I remember buying this cassette tape at the corner store back in 1993 when it first dropped. I was 9 years old and tape stores in the mall wouldnt let me buy this album because I was too young but the Arabs that owned the store near my house didn't give a fuck how old you was as long as you had that cash lol. Good memories and I banged this tape non stop, use to hide it in my room so my mom wouldn't see it lol
I bought a snoop Dogg t shirt and that album at the mall with my allowance the day it dropped and was teased about the shirt at school the following Monday because nerdy white kids weren't supposed to wear that type of shirt with a flannel and a nirvana patch on their backpacks apparently, but, whatever, it was totally worth it

I managed to steal the tape, re-record it and get it back thinking i was slick. The bloke noticed and eventually bought me a copy. This album introduced me to Rap, Westcoast Rap and most importantly, G Funk rap. It’ll always have a place in my heart but i actually think Snoops ‘Tha Last Meal’ is his best piece.

I was in da pen. I was on the greyhound bus going home and the two kids sitting behind me were playing the new snoop dogg singing it word for word.
I was in the 9th grade. The album came out during a home basketball game. All of my friends left the stands to go listen t o the album. We had to wait for someone to buy us copies, and that peson had to go to Camelot Records, get copies, then drop them off at the school.
This isbthe album that Drink Champs need to compare with Illmatic. The anticipation on both was palpable and this was only matched by the fact that both albums delivered what we were all waiting for. You can still listen to both of them all the way through 30 years later and still be like that was an unreal debut.
The chronic was cool sitting in the back of my dad's car, but doggystyle in my walk man was the first true album that made my head explode as a thirteen year old youngsta learned this album from front to back. Snoops vocals are indeed in my DNA!!!!

Im not even 19 yet but i stay educated on historic music. The first time i listened this album i was like wow i felt like i got teleported to 1993, i was amused by the samples that were made from this album such as the intro for ready to die by Notorious big, but yeah overall i love this album and i still listen to it along with other 90s albums.
I loved this album. I remember my dad bought it for me on a road trip we took from Virginia to Gary, Indiana in 1993. While playing it, which is crazy on a family road trip my mother at the time was sleep, but woke up during one of those songs took out that cassette tape and chucked it off the window. I was heartbroken, but I eventually purchased another. I’ll never forget that. 🐾
In my opinion this album is my main argument why hip hop is the reason why it became so fully mainstream and that even white people could start listen to rap publicly, The Chronic set off the tone from what was coming with it literally being on the the most played hip hop songs for 2 years straight and eventually being one of the best songs ever produced & created. Doggystyle hit the peak, the rollout, the production, the video clips literally anything about this album

That would be Eminem imo, many ppl that are not even into the rap demographic are listening to rap when they listen to Eminem. Eminem filled that space.
Gangsta Rap was charting mainly because of white teenagers buying the music but i think on a larger scale Eminem is what really pushed rap music a few decades in.
- Tupac most iconic, Raps Elvis figure the first Rapper to do many milestones, eg one being the first rapper to have a double pressed cd go platinum. I think this was ever too not just for rap but over all music genres.
- Eminem the one that really put the genre as a main stay genre globally, him and 50 cent together represent the black and white coming together.
- NWA the poster children for Gangsta rap on the westcoast.
- Ice T a real OG probably even more so than NWA. Comes from a time where there was no grassroot ventures and you had to be directly signed to Warner. Warner bros being the OG for entertainment its at the top of the umbrella. Ice T also got some footage with the classic WB logo in some of his works which i would say is rare no other rapper has that. Time Warner today is the music division of WB but we are talking like iconic logo loony tunes etc.

Im from Portland. I was in 4th grade. It was a vibe. Snoop was on top if the world. We all rocked kakis with chucks back then. Fig flannels 😂. I had a little jerry curl too. Gangbanging was huge back then. Anything that Snoop touched was gold back then. He was tge face of the West Coast sound, style, lingo, etc. The weed leaf was a bold statement back then too because it was still illegal and not socially acceptable. Snoop was very open about smoking weed back then. To the point of where they slowly started showing it on tv, or at least implying it. It was a time.
I was too young to buy the album with explicit lyrics. So i stood outside kmart and asked customers to buy it for me lucky for me a stranger took my plea

Happy that Gz Up, Hoez Down is finally on streaming but it sucks that the original 1993 version of Tha Next Episode has yet to be released officially but oh well
Btw you should've mentioned that Snoop and Dre are apparently working on a new album together, a sequel to Doggystyle called Missionary. Talks about it were going around for a while but I think they officially announced it on a interview with Jimmy Fallon, if I'm not mistaken. Either way like I said, great vid!
In 93 you couldn’t go anywhere without this cd / tape playing in the deck , streets , house party’s. It was so huge , I mean the chronic was still kind of new but just starting to quiet down . It's always insane when people try to discredit Dr. Dre as a producer. When Dre left Ruthless Cold187 couldn't do what Dre did even tho he said Dre took credit for beats. When Dre Left Death Row, Daz, Warren G or any of those other dudes failed to do what Dre did despite both (Especially Daz) saying Dre took beats from them. Wow, the irony, just bought a marbled vinyl version of this album for the collection, having already copped the CD when it came out back in the early 90s. In fact, I remember going to see the movie 'Deep Cover' just to see 'that' music video play out during the end credits 😅👊🏾

You can also see how far Dre has come from as a producer/beat maker on this album. In the early days of N.W.A you can see it had a lot of fun dmc, east coast influence with just more funk in it. Then on the last NWA album “Niggaz4Life” it had a lot of reggae and funk in it with instruments and barley any samples. Then The Chronic had all of it in 1 one with the G Funk and 70s Samples and with more singers on it like Jewell and Nate dogg. Then On doggystyle it was straight funk but then with hip hop influence in my opinion, the hooks, the chorus, and the way the songs are produced this really feels like a funk album with some hip hop influence. And in my opinion Who am I (what’s my name) is Dre’s best beat

First of all, that's not George Clinton on the song "Doggystyle". That's actually bass player Tony "Money" Green aka T. Green. He's the one that connected George with Dr. Dre and Snoop. Once the connection happened, Dre produced the "G-Funk Intro" to replace "Doggystyle" and they also did the remix to "Let Me Ride". The song "Doggystyle" was originally going to open the album. That's Nancy Fletcher, Jewell (RIP), and T. Green
Dre really did produced the album. Daz and Emanuel Deen (RIP) were some of the musical players including beat making that collaborated with Dre. They were not producers at that point. Dre put that together. He produced it. Snoop confirmed that several times over the years. Even Daz changed his tune regarding claims of not getting production credit for that album. Chris "The Glove" Taylor is another collaborator in making that album.
The production for What's My Name (Who Am I) was created same time (possibly same session) for the production of what later became "Can't C Me" by 2Pac. That production was originally for Dre & Ice Cube's Helter Skelter (unreleased project). Hints the similarly in the beat pattern with "What's My Name" and "Can't C Me". That's Chris "The Glove" Taylor on "What's My Name" on Vocoder and that's Nancy Fletcher singing near the end of the song.
The song "D.A.V.E" was later given to Bow Wow for possible usage on the Murder Was The Case soundtrack.
It's possible that The D.O.C may be a co-writer on the unreleased "Tha Next Episode". I tried to get D.O.C to address it more but, he didn't confirm nor deny it. Yet, he let it be known that you can hear sprinkles of The D.O.C in some of Snoop's work at that time. (Also) Dre produced that song, not Warren G. Although that sample & loop came from Warren G (same thing goes for Gz & Hustlerz, I think that was from Dre's record collection), Dre flipped those ideas and produced those songs. Warren was one of a few at the time that bought vinyl records for Dr. Dre as well as others from his production team to use as samples for cuts (scratches/DJ), loops, etc. Hints why Warren was able to use the exact loop for his own song & his own production a year later (Runnin' With No Brake, 1994). The same thing with that sample for Gz & Hustlaz but, that loop was later used for Warren's production work for 2Pac.
It was the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards when Snoop performed Murder Was The Case. The 1993 MTV VMAs saw Snoop appear as a presenter with Dr. Dre & George Clinton. Snoop was on the run for that murder (he was later acquitted) when he made that appearance. There's an interesting story behind that 93 VMA appearance.😎🫡

It was stolen from the car, went to buy another one and it was still there, 2nd one, I believe someone stole it from me, someone I knew. Bought a 3rd Doggystyle album and G'z Up Hoez Down was gone!! And it was my favorite!!! I'm so happy I get to hear it now on Spotify.

There is absolutely no way THAT was done in 48 hours. I think Dre would've never released it knowing how much of a perfectionist he is. If that was done in 48 hours the god damn Dre must be sitting on MULTIPLE classics. Because the Mixing and Beats on Doggy Style where like nothing else at the time. I wasn't alive (lol) but if you play Doggystyle and then Illmatic and Ready To Die. You see the difference in mixing and production almost instantly and those albums didn't release far between each other
That's according to Dre's right-hand man. His perspective definitely needed a mention. It's no secret that this album was indeed rushed as I provided evidence with Suge and the news articles I mentioned. The hype for it was real.

I absolutely hated C. Delores Tucker as a kid. As an adult looking back on it all… she was right with what she was saying.
Weirdly, I don't really remember buying this album. I remember loving G Funk Intro, M***** Was the Case and Gz and Hustlas.
A couple of friends really got into the west coast thing but I was and still am an east coast girl. I liked that raw Hip-Hop that was about beats and spitting and videos were just heads on the street. But I did like this album a lot.
But I've been transferring thousands of songs to a new PC (30,000+ already. At least another 20,000 to go) and was swapping the MP3 version of this with a flac and damn this is a good album. It must be twenty-five years since I listened to any of it. I just wish I could have played it louder.
The real surprise is that I only just got around to checking Lady of Rage and her album is a banger! The girl could spit!

Wow... went back to re-listen to this album - and for some strange reason - IT SOUNDS SOO MUCH BETTER in 2024 than I remember it back when it first came out.
Back then, this whole entire album was an anthem - but it just sounds soo MUCH BETTER! I guess it's because of the fresh insight - thanks to this RUclips video. There's soo much that went over my head back then.. especially the SKITS (the one before LODI-DODI)

Yo I was in 8th grade when this record came out, our school bus driver let us play the tape on the way to and from school.
It's the highest debuting album for ANY artist, not just hip hop. But 50 Cent broke that record with GRODT.

I was 9 years old and tape stores in the mall wouldnt let me buy this album because I was too young but the Arabs that owned the store near my house didn't give a fuck how old you was as long as you had that cash lol. Good memories and I banged this tape non stop, use to hide it in my room so my mom wouldn't see it lol
