- I'm so tired of garbage film lights! Time to make something that will last! My version of a LED film light.

The more I watch, the more I realize Tim has made his blacksmithing an expression of art.
As a former lighting designer for manufacturing, may I say you did awesome!! Solid work, my man! Some things I would’ve done differently, but a stellar build overall.
- I would have painted the inner reflector high-brilliance matte white to prevent some galvanized glare.
- The links you made are end-split, which is a failure point. As beefy as you made them, likely not an issue.
- A white acrylic/polycarbonate diffuser would definitely soften any hard shadows.
Keep it up!!
Ya, I was a little dumbstruck when I saw how he installed those links.
Like you say, probably so overbuilt it'll never matter, but I'd have done... Almost anything besides that.
White wouldn't withstand the inside of a blacksmith shop but for so long, it'll all be residue colored before long
I concur with this.... white is actually a better and softer reflective surface that distributes the light more evenly and better.
I'm a former hotel event tech, with some rigging training. I would have used shackles there, and one as a stop for the ceiling bar mount. Eyelet on the bottom of the hook to accommodate the shackle pin.
@@j.sargent9172 I'd bet that Sherwin Williams Macropoxy 646 would work very well in this application. It can withstand industrial and harsh environments very well. It's great stuff.
I used to watch these videos on a shared account before I went through a break up. Now I’ve found it again I’m going to binge watch. Loads to catch up on
Why would you share an account?
😊😊
Somebody please sponsor this fella a plasma cutter!
oxys more fun thou
Gas axe is an art, not specifically in this instance though. LOL.
Somebody make americans use the damn shield on the grinders. WTF is up with that?
@datadavis The creator is Canadian, but he is part of North America I suppose.
@@deltan9ne306 yea whatever, i just dont get it. Ive been a welder and steelworker all my life and i have never needed to remove that guard. And ive exploded a bunch of discs i never had to remove from my flesh.
Now that's a light with character. Well done.
Just installed some hexagon lights in my shop I thought were cool, but Timmy says “hold my beer pal” and hand makes the coolest lights ever made.
but UNSAFEST lights- 1. running mains power through a conductive fitting (brass) without say an insulated gland nut; 2. tying a knot in it; 3. fixing it with a grub screw???
damn that looks great, not only the finished piece but how good that films at the end, looking forward to seeing that super sexy lighting in future vids!!
Wow! This new light is functionaly but so Timothy!
All the precision angle grinder work seems very impressive. Like doing cabinet work with a skill saw. Nice work Tim!
This was absolutely epic. I love how you took a concrete filled pipe and repurposed it in overkill fashion to create a thing of beauty!!!
It looks like it’s been hanging there for 90 years, mission accomplished. Lol
Everyone complaining about the noise and I'm just happy another Tim Video hit the Tube. Grow up people and just enjoy a master at work
It fits your shop decor fine. Nice job.
Now =that's= heavy duty! ⭐🙂👍
I bought a dog trained in the arts of blacksmithing....
as soon as we got home, he made a bolt for the door!
😂
🤦🏻♂️
Just an idea but if you discover after use of that light, that it is not producing enough light. You effectively made a giant heat sync of a light fixture and can put much more powerful led light elements into it as long as you provide thermal transfer between the element and the fixture.
With the air gap between the reflector and body there is no thermal transfer therefore the main body is not a heat sink at all but the convection around the reflector doesn't hurt a thing.
It's been a while. Welcome back
I learned from my boss that spraying muriatic acid first and then hydrogen proxied on top right away rusts steel in about 30 minutes and looks amazing. just a tip i thought ide share. love the content keep it up.
Mornin Tim. I just did a light install in my basement greenhouse to get better light as well. It definitely helps with the filming
Very impressive! Great work!
Tim, any interest in designing/forging a double bit hatchet? One blade to chop and cut the other for splitting. That’d super cool to see what you come up with. Never seen forged from scratch. Super handy to have in camp. Maybe call it the Double Hawk. Love the content, keep it coming. Peace.
love the light!!! happy to see you post another video Tim~
That light is awesome. I think I need one over my basement bar. A little smaller of course
Yeah, might adapt this to a 3” pipe for some LED fixtures I have, dress em up a bit!
I really liked all the bending work. Beautiful lines, and symmetrical. I think that was the best way to showcase your craftsmanship. Beautiful aesthetics Tim. Bravo!
Just an absolute joy to watch.
Very cool build Mr. Dyck! Yours is one of my favorite channels!
Tim, I had headphones on. I definitely heard the high-pitched squeal eeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I loved this video! Your new light is awesome! I love that rust is its color. It fits so well. I love the whole thing!
Dude it was awesome to see you make this. I know it was just a light but it was really cool man.
Yeeeeees. When this guy posts, I click.
Great job. Thank you 😊
Gotta hand it to you, Tim! Beautiful work. Also, you manage to always make it seem like you don't know what you are doing, but always manage to get exactly what you want in the end. This make it up as you go style of fabricating coupled with the skill to make things exactly how you picture them is highly entertaining. Keep up the good work.
You make it look so easy
Nice work Tim!
Waveform lights look great! I made a few fixtures about 3 years ago. I’ve been very happy
Looks amazing Tim. That light is so bombproof looking, and yet elegant. I vote for the diffuser because in your outro shot you’re getting some big strange glare.
Great fabrication skills - a lot of work
wow that came out soo cool!!!!!!
Very cool, love the beefy hardware
It is refreshing to see someone else NOT use coolant on there bandsaw. Heck YES!
#chefkisses 🤌🏼
I personally Love the way how precise you can cut with an angle grinder, and with such an ease. The lamp is gorgeous and fits right in. I think your powerfeed will overheat over time because it has no ways to go with the heat he generates. But that is a matter of opinion of course and time will tell. The rim you added made it all come together and at the same time giving it strength too. I love your man cave it is an beautiful workshop i can smell the metal from here. I wish i had the space for that, but i filled mine with woodworking tools instead.keep the videos' coming and the darkness in your video's gives it that special steampunk feeling . that i personally like.
Great idea 😊😊😊
Loved every second
I like it. I want one!
Awesome job! Looks so well and the rust optic is great! I think it needs a diffuser!
Very cool! That is definitely very warm lighting, I’m very curious on how it will look in future videos!
Mr.dyck is right on with a thousand dollar axe jigga paleeze
Nice vid with out music, welding splatter, grinder grinding ,nice
Killed it with this one brother…seems like an arc gouger or plasma torch would be a great investment to save you time…time= money
Very texas chainsaw massaceresque. I like it!
Theres are some Architectural Digest loft looking lights!
Nice work!
Lovely !
Man I've been thinking about making all my shop lights.
amazing!
4:40 great warping reduction technique.
I looked up Waveform lighting. They are only 10 miles from where I live!
Awesome!
1:53 That's a sah-weet fingerboard half-pipe there.
30:39 "done and rusted" lol nice hahaha
Nice work. Crazy amount of work for a shop light but cool nonetheless.
love it
Such a sexy lamp!! God damn! 😁
Not sure why this came across my feed 🤷♂️ I don’t watch a lot of blacksmithing although I would like to try it sometime , I really only watched cause he’s using my name 😏😂🍻
If you mount bigger fans inside the power supply housing, it might cut back on the noise. Smaller fans are louder.
I can to hear that high-pitched noise from the power supply and I wasn't even wearing earbuds
Looks great, now build 5 or 6 more to replace those other ceiling lights, shouldn’t take that long now that you have your pattern! Lol
Mmmm Enlightening.
that fixture would look soooo good above a pool table
I’d be interested in knowing how strong Tim’s grip is. Being a blacksmith you’d have to develop rather substantial grip strength.
Nice light
What a wonderful video and amazing build you are a pleasure to watch. A great example of a true craftsman. I love seeing all the skills you have.
I have questions for those that know more than me. With the beautiful rust finish will it degrade the structural integrity over time? Why the lower light temperature instead of daylight 5200k?
perfect.
If you can get the reflective powder they use for the white lines on the highway, coat the inside with an adhesive of some kind. Then coat the adhesive with the powder. It would likely make an excellent reflector. Along with s 2"-4" piece of aluminum or steel angle. To mount LED strips to, about. 200 watts of cool white and 200watts of warm white and a couple led dimmers. To set the correct color temperature, and use a capacitor at the led strip, weather using led tape strip, or individual 3-5 even 10 watt cob led's, to have 10, X 10 watt LED's in a row. Of each color temperature, with a cc cv DC driver driving them all in series parallel a server rack 12v power supply 400 watt or do used are roughly $25 a pair, a cc cv DC to DC boost converter to drive the LEDs, I doubt you will need full power from both color temperature lights , 400 watts of Led is bright! Possibly close to 3-4kw of tungsten Element bulbs. Maybe stretch a piece of thin synthetic silk or opaque plastic over the face to keep the LEDs and reflector clean! Maybe add about ,50 watts of RGB LEDS as well to tint the light any color you want! But use capacitors at the led to reduce or prevent flicker, the last thing you want is to Put in all this work. And the video having the lights fading on and off! 😮, DC lights don't really do this, they Flicker, but a small capacitor can stop this,
Something you might run into, heat is the enemy of LEDs, depending on how much heat they produce, you have created a place for the heat to build up and not escape. Some holes in the top might be required to prolong the lights life. I do not know if the LED strips are as susceptible to the heat as other LED lights are. Something to think about.
Get yourself a Mean Well power supply, they're about the best quality of the offshore options.
Nice 👍
That light is sick. Only worry is the tape holing the LEDs. Hopefully it holds up.
yeah, it never does
Tim : those lights are huge and cumbersome to move
- Proceeds to make a 60kg light
Shop concrete floor next?
Amazing work! What did you use for the rusting?
The way this man casually holds a file a half inch from the lathe screams "don't worry, i've done this before."
If you can have the same CRI between light sources, then you will have an easier time with white balance and colour grading your video. Right now it’s looking mismatched between the new and the old lights. If everything is the same, then it doesn’t matter if you’re using 3200K or 4000K lights since they can become “white” for the camera.
Awsome
Loose the fan in the PSU, just mount it to a heatsink, those PSU's are good for the price, I've been using 30amp ones to run my ham radios
Love your content. Note, your website link doesn’t seem to be working.
Cool. Get a diffuser!
You look like you could be Matthew McConaugheys brother my dude.
What is light and very heavy at the same time? 😉👍
All the design is fantastic. Just 1 thing: The adhesive on LED strips is awful, I'll give it max 6 months before the strips start to come away. Just needs some decent glue
You should paint your walls from 2 meters above the floor and the roof white or light grey the whole shop would looks brighter just the cheapest paint you can find
That is fantastic advice. It would make a world of difference. Every time i see one of his videos I wonder how he can stand it so dark in there. Its like the walls just eat all of the light in there. Maybe it makes it easier to light the stuff he is trying to film or something, i dunno.
whats that jacket in outro pls?
🤜🤛
Hi! Your website seems to be down. At least in EU.
please put a guard on that angle grinder... i recently had a disk explode and found oud the hard way what they'r for.....
One word : ALUMINIUM
Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing. aluminum would've been better in nearly every way. It might be more expensive if you have to purchase the metal new, but there is a lot of aluminum scrap out there in the world to use in projects like this. A guy just has to keep an eye out for it. And while I get some people are all about that iron aesthetic, I think everyone would agree that those hefty and/or complex aluminum extrusions are just plain cool.
Well at least they aren't heavy
And we can hear the noise
Do yourself a favor: when the first Powersupply died due to metaldust sucked in by the fan: get yourself a sealed IP6x one. It will survive much longer.
эта лампа переживет ядерный взрыв!
Postapocalypticool.
I strongly suggest to change the LEDs to 5600K in order to blend with the other fixtures I see in your shop, makes your life easier in post. Other than that the light looks very sturdy. Also consider using diffusion, it makes the light wrap around your subject. Good job!
