  • In the first video of our new Hands On series we learn how to forage for seaweed and make gomasio, a delicious seasoning for soups, salads, scrambled eggs and a variety of other meals. Kirsten Bradley, from Milkwood Permaculture, takes us to the beach to harvest sea lettuce and kelp, then back to her kitchen for step-by step instructions. You can download a 1-page handout with full details when you’re ready to get foraging!

Very happy that you talk about never taking everything of anything as there are so many birds and other critters that depend on the berries, fruits, seaweed etc.

@helle hansen | that was a needed gentle reminder of the (forgotten) ecosystem; that's probably the cause of this existential problem of climate change and exorbitant waste: forgetting that we're apart of a whole (system).

Thank you for your time, effort and love in contributing to humanity this wonderful source of knowledge. I cannot buy anything unprocessed in the (Asian) supermarket. They've been soaked in canola oil, heat treated, processed msg, sugar and salt is added. This is exactly what people who understand health and environment need.

Great video but sadly I live in Melbourne's burbs and wouldn't trust anything that came out of the bay.
I do on odd occasions gather the high tide beached kelp and add it to the compost for the minerals.
If I was on the coast away from the city I'd love to give it a try and will next time I'm on a trip
so long as I can be sure I'm allowed to collect it where I go.

I live in the Pacific Northwest USA. I'm looking for a comprehensive diet consisting of totally foraged/caught foods that are sustainable and abundant. So, I'd like staples to be sourced from the ocean in the area. I like this recipe, except the sesame seeds, half of the recipe, are not easily had in the Pacific Northwest in or near the ocean. Do you have any specific sources or recipes? Or maybe somebody I could contact? Thanks

I'd love to forage seaweed but I'm not sure if I should trust the water in my area... There are two small rivers nearby and I'm sure they carry all sorts of gross stuff like pesticides into the sea. The area is not officially polluted though... I don't know really. I do eat seafood fished in the area so maybe I'm worrying too much about the seaweed?
