hey mate, loved the video. Just wondering what's an alright swell forecast for off the rocks? Is a 11-13 second period and a 1.3-1.6m swell height alright for off the rocks? cheers

Hey Terry. I wouldn't go if the swells are over 1.5m. For between 1.2-1.5m swells, it should be over 10 second frequency. You also need to check the winds, don't go if its over 20kms and its the opposite direction of the swells, this will create big waves. Finally, the direction of ledge is also important, north facing is best if the swell is southerly or south-easterly. I hope that helps.

Like your passion , boys! The spot your fishing screams big drummer (the wash zone with offshore bommie) - pea sized ball sinker running straight down to a strong 1/0 suicide hook (20 lb schneider mono - no trace), half a peeled cooked vannemei prawn and some bread berley....guaranteed boys!!!

Thanks Frank, we need to give drummers a go. We see locals in the area fishing for drummers, but never tried. Do we cast the bait into the wash?

If the wash is running straight out from the rocks, throw a scoop of mashed bread without tuna oil or pilchards in at your feet. Do this every 5 - 10 minutes. If fishing braid, tie a 3 m leader of 30 lb mono to your braid. Run a 00, 0 or size 1 ball sinker down to your hook (size 2 - 1/0 - double strength - drummer have a small mouth but are super strong and will snap a light hook). You can buy cooked vannemei prawns for $ 20 kg at Coles. Salt them down before you head out as this makes them harder for pickers to remove. Peel them and throw the head and end tail bit in as berley. Cut the peeled prawn in half - 2 baits. Bait up with the hook point exposed and cast out about 10 metres (drummer live in the wash zone close to structure and food being washed in off the rocks) from the rocks. Allow the bait to sink but not fully to the bottom. Wind slowly to take the slack out the line. Allow the bait to wash around, constantly keeping in contact by slow winding out the slack. When you feel some solid whacks on the line, don't strike. Allow the drummer to pull the rod tip down then strike hard and go hard. No light drag settings here. Keep the fish's head up and use side pressure to steer the drummer away from any underwater caves. You can use the waves to surf big drummer out - I did this on my PB a 4.5 kg brute (I've almost landed a couple of much bigger models). Good luck and tight lines!

Drummer like cover to hunt so you need to cast into the white water. They don't require a deep ledge and will feed comfortably in water from 1-5 metres deep. They don't seem to like wash with lots of sand churned up in it - this is my expereince anyway. Give em a go. A big one will do you in seconds so don't pussy foot around. They are top eating if bled straight away, kept cool they filleted and skinned.

We love using the Zerek Cavalla 45 grams i the pilchard or yellowtail colour. It did the damage during summer.
