Love the old 80's movie adaptation, but this looks really promising. With the Brothers Lionheart in production I'm hoping for a new Astrid Lindgren cinematic universe

Maybe but the in the origonal the cast, world, effecys and the lock of the forst cretshurs is far superior! Sad that whit all the tech and stuff tehy was not able to beat a 40 year old film!

I'd really like to see this. There are even official Netflix ads for it on RUclips but it is not yet available in the US, only apparently in Europe. I actually contacted Netflix and they had no information about a US premiere.

Thank you so much for this information. I'm in Jersey and like you said, I'm seeing Ads for this series left & right, but unavailable here in the US.
I didn't even know how to speak to a live person at Netflix. It's a Red Flag if they don't know when & if it's ever coming to the US.
Not to sound like someone who has Elite like status, but you'd think we would have it before anyone else. I mean really. (Smile)
Please reach out if you hear of any positive updates.
      Peace

As a Swed I'm surprised this is even a thing beyond our borders, I watched the old live action movie from -84 alot as a child! No one here ever talks about the anime or even know it exists 😅 But the old Astrid Lindgren movies are still very close to heart to everyone between 60-25 years old.
I'm going to give this series a chance but I'm afraid nostalgia will disturb the experience

I was scared that would be the case(being only part one). I’m just two eps in but I don’t like how they added a whole sideplot in the village. I’m not sure I like the early introduction to Borka either. I think it should be Ronjas story and we should find out things when she does so when they take the other side of the castle we don’t know anything about them and we feel her anger and the threat they might pose. If you are in anyway intrigued by Ronja, read the book! I’ve re-read it as an adult to, it’s a great story 😊

I watched the Finnish version of the Movie made in 1984, and I bought the dvd some time ago. Childhood memories.
I watched the entirety of the 6 episodes last weekend and I did enjoy it, despite all the added characters and plot. I know some people didn't like that there was added characters and plot, but personally I have enjoyed the tv series and can't wait for the next 6 episodes. They sure left a cliffhanger on the 6th episode so I wonder how they combine the old and the new plot together from there.

like most here i have a lot more memories of the 80s movie, the songs alone are just too good.
and watching the netflix adaptation they clearly pay homage to it,with some of the music but it's always in the background. i haven't read the book in ages but it seems the new series tries to ad quite a few things like more here and a little lore there, to what is mostly a simple fairytale for kids.

I grew up with ALL of Astrid Lindgren's stories, Ronja included......... And I know that the actors of the movie weren't pleased with the fall-out after it... So I love this series, and I love the anime....... But the book is definitely where I started to love Ronja and Birk. I'm very, VERY open to new interpetations, though. :D

The 1984 version of Ronja the robber's daughter is better and has better music.
The 1987 movie 'Mio in the land of faraway' (with Cristopher Lee and Christian Bale) is based on another Astrid Lindgren novel (it's on RUclips).

  • @duch11

The 1984 live action movie version was better, because nostalgia, the series is ok, because it's really true towards the movie.. one look at the hair of mattis and I was Sold.. I just want the danish narrator over the whole thing, and then I'll be happy..

It was enjoyable and well done, but somewhat immersion breaking with the rather woke choice of casting.
It's extremely unrealistic and unbelievable that every other member of the cast is some shade of distinctly non-nordic ethnicity.
One or two would have been fine.
Especially if it was hinted at them having a rather unusual life story that made them end up in the far north of the world.
Such extraordinary tales did happen occasionally in real life, after all and it's not impossible.
But every 3-4 cast members being african or middle eastern? In a medieval nordic setting? Give me a break.
It's nothing short of appropriation of a nordic folk tale and cultural touchstone.
Doing this is just as distasteful as if there was a show or movie made about african mythology and legend but almost everyone casted were the most pale of red-headed nordics.
It's laughable in a vacuum. But we've seen this pattern repeat itself over and over in everything related to european history, myth and culture.
It's nothing short of an act of aggression against european culture and an attempted act of blackwashing and cultural erasure.
I'm all for seeing more stories told about and featuring non-europeans.
But tell those stories from where it makes sense.
Tell original stories or make use of the rich and virtually untapped mythos and history already native to africa and the middle east.
Stealing from europeans like this just reinforces the mistaken notion that these people have no stories worth telling.
    Which is obviously not true.
Wokeification hurts everyone. It hurts europeans and it hurts non-europeans.
    It needs to stop.
Or all our cultures and history becomes so muddled that we forget who we are and where we came from.
Losing any ability to learn from our past in the process.
Erasure of differences the way the woke go about it is ultimately just racism with extra steps.
We create tolerance of difference by celebrating and recognizing difference.
Not by chanting with cult-like zeal that 'there are no differences' over and over again.
Rant about woke encroachment aside, this was all in all a good adaptation. The creature design was good.
The design of the vittra was especially good. And the set design was excellent.
And most of the actors did a stellar job. The music design was quite good as well.
