    "why didnt lin play the point out?" - In table tennis, especially when you've spent your life playing in leagues/tournaments without an umpire, play often stops immediately after a transgression (net ball on serve, ball hitting shirt, hitting a ball twice, etc) otherwise you're 'declining the penalty' and playing on.

    • @B3Band
      @B3Band 9 месяцев назад +24

      Yeah, that's lame. In real sports you play to the whistle. If there's no call, you play the sport, rather than trying to be the ref instead of playing the sport.
      Even in sports where it's accepted to argue with the refs, if there is no call, you keep playing.

      What Karlsen did here is to dry some sweat off the racket hand, improve grip (it matters, can't have the racket slipping even a millimeter). Same reason why we always touch the table close to the net.

    Table tennis players know the situation and probably have attempted this shot ( just because you try once you realize you just missed, and then you would pull back your arm and somehow try to hit it in a second attempt), but at least for myself I can say it worked out maybe twice in my life but tried hundreds of times.

    Bit of a dream come true for Jomboy to breakdown professional TT that I don't expect to see again any time soon....
    Someone really knowledgable on TT though can explain the exact reason the thrown paddle point didn't count. Is it because you're not allowed to throw the paddle, or because it was hit off the table by his paddle? Otherwise I want to give the point to Karlsson because other guy's shot never landed on his side.

    • @pb6270
      @pb6270 9 месяцев назад

      On review it does land after hitting the abandoned paddle so couldn't be Karlsson's point anyway
      Also general FYI this is the 2nd most popular sport in the world after soccer, don't take too lightly

    • @imightbebiased9311
      @imightbebiased9311 9 месяцев назад +4

      Your rationale is off on multiple counts here. There's no interpretation of events that would ever give Karlsson the point. Even if it were legal to throw your paddle, that would then mean that any touch of the paddle without it being in your hand counted as your return. When Shedong connected with Karlsson's paddle, Karlsson's theoretical return thuds into the table.
      But, in terms of throwing the paddle, no it is not legal. According to the ITTF rules:
      2.5.7 A player strikes the ball if he or she touches it in play with his or her racket, held in the hand, or with his or her racket hand below the wrist.
      Racket's gotta be in hand to count as a shot.

    • @pb6270
      @pb6270 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@imightbebiased9311 yes, as my own reply shows I missed the fact that Karlsson's "no handed" return lands back on his own side and couldn't possibly be interpreted as his point
      Thank you for the citation of the official rule.

    • @turbozed
      @turbozed 9 месяцев назад +1

      The rule is that you are allowed to hit the ball with any part of your paddle and the hand holding the paddle. So if you miss the ball with your paddle and it just hits your hand or finger and still goes over it's legal.
      Once the paddle is separated from your hand, you no longer can hit the ball either the paddle or your hand. So neither your empty hand or the thrown paddle can be used and the point is over at the moment the ball touches any of those surfaces.

      Ping pong balls are light enough for air currents to affect the trajectory. He likely affected its trajectory with the air current from the paddle which is effectively a hand fan.
