    Based on the earliest articles I've found about it, that's not what balanced-for-headphones was invented to do - it's not for noise rejection (that's for long interconnect cables, headphone cables don't qualify as they're not long enough to pick up audio frequency EMI) and it's not for power (except maybe in small portable devices running off batteries) even though companies lately have mostly marketed it as being about power.
    It's for crosstalk rejection and all the benefits that could come out of that in terms of staging and imaging/detail. That's why they got rid of the common ground: inter-channel crosstalk through the voltage drop over the common return wire disappears from the equation. Balanced for headphones is about crosstalk. Not power (mostly), not noise.

    I have the JDS Atom Amp 2 as my first desktop/non-portable amp and 2.65W of power is way more than enough. I don't go past 60% of the knob on my 6XX or my Hifiman planars (Ananda, Sundara, HE400i) on LOW gain. I didn't believe amps would change the sound that much but it was so much blissful than my FiiO BTR5 and Q3. The bass had way more detail and spacious and the sibilance from the treble was reduced. The spatial imaging and soundstage just feels so much more...right?
    The only headphone that didn't work was the Meze 99 because it was too easy to drive and the bass became quite boomy.

      @Choloo-jf7fw no it’s 7 bands if you enable the option to turn the treble and bass into peak filters. Oratory1990 has EQs just for the RME ADI Dac fs they are 7 bands panoramic. You just have to check an option that has them included in the EQ and then they show up and you can change them to peak high pass or low pass. They will no longer work as treble and base toning nobs but only for that particular saved EQ.

The manual is quite (perhaps overtly?) honest about this and doesn't qualify the bass/treble adjustments as part of the parametric EQ, probably because they only act as up to +/- 6dB shelf adjustments (no up to +/- 12dB peak and 12 dB low/high cut adjustments here are possible, unlike for bands 1 and 5), even though indeed you can adjust the gain, frequency and Q factor of these.

    do most dac/amps have usb source noise? I use fiio k7 currently.

    • @GoldenSound
      @GoldenSound 4 дня назад +3

      It varies significantly.
      Some devices like the Holo Cyan 2 have full galvanic isolation internally and are immune to source noise. Others aren't 'isolated' but have very effective filtering to where performance typically doesn't show any difference. Other products can be really susceptible.
      I've not tested the K7 specifically so can't speak to that unfortunately.
      A USB Galvanic isolator in my opinion is a great thing to have though and I use one all the time unless the DAC has galvanic isolation already. The problem was that previously they were really expensive. Texas Instruments recently released a new isolator IC which is what allowed JDS to make one so cheap.

    Did you had the opportunity to test the Atom stack from JDS Labs? If so, how does the Element IV compare with the Atom stack?
    I know that the stack is cheaper than the Element IV, but having 2 components that do only one thing (being an amp and being a DAC) a beginner like myself would think that it would result in better audio than a component that tries to do 2 things at the same time. Also the stack has a balanced output, something that some people in the comments seem to want from their amp.

In that case, the JDS Element IV indeed makes a lot more sense for most people, even taking into account the USB isolator. Sure, it doesn't have balanced XLR and dedicated IEM outputs, but it has a 10-band parametric EQ (the RME ADI-2's is only 5-band, even with the Remote app). Also, most of the RME ADI-2 DAC DSP features won't be useful to most people. Still, I wonder how both compare sound-wise...

      I own the element three and used to own a FiiO. You’re making a good decision. I’m trying to convince myself I don’t want the IV. I really want that EQ.

      @@BoomerPlusUltraI’m primarily a gamer with minor in music but I have been searching for an end game desktop solution for awhile now. The Element 3 was what I wanted but my new PC cost so much this year I thought I’d buy something a little more economical for now. Then I saw the Element 4 was released. And with a new parametric EQ and usb C….. I ordered one today lol. What FiiO did you own and what are the benefits going to an Element for you?

    If this had a 4.4mm balanced input as well then it would be basically perfect. I have so many headphones with a balanced cable and to buy all new cables just to have a single ended 1/4” jack would add on a lot of extra cost.

      I think you can request to have this port instead of the 1/4 Jack.
      I saw it mentioned on their website but I didn’t look further into it.

      You can request for headphone port change from 6.35 to 4.4 in the Shipping notes box while ordering it.

      Why not get one or a couple high quality 1/4" male to 4.4mm female adapter cables?

    AUNE S9C PRO is under 1000$, but it doesn't have an PEQ, other than that I would consider it an upgrade.

      S9c is trash, no base, no resolution, no depth, everything is blurry and heavy.

    That device looks great!
    But to me, paying 500 USD$ for an unbalanced audio device that plugs into a noisy computer makes no sense...
    What if you have a ground loop or noise issue? Will the USB isolator really fix the problem?
    Personally, I don't take any chance and use a balanced DAC output 👍

    • @TheHEADPHONEShow
      @TheHEADPHONEShow  4 дня назад +4

      The PSU is actually ungrounded, so ground loops won't be an issue. The USB noise pickup is a little annoying, but as mentioned can be solved with the isolator (and balanced won't fix performance degredation from USB noise in other devices anyway)

    This design reminds my good old Grace Design M9xx, which was IMO better looking and built BTW 😊 Lack of 4.4 is a downside. I highly doubt that it is better than Chord Mojo 2, which has much more features and much more innovative 😊

    6:50 my brother in christ you are talking about a BETA web driver. That means it will be improved and worked on, it can't get any more obvious than that. Also when you called for a "firmware update" to fix that, what you actually meant was a software update, it's not related at all to the firmware.

    Checks all the boxes ??? How so and what about the lack of I/O options ?
    IMHO, at the asking price of around 550 bucks, connectivity in terms of both inputs and outputs really leaves a lot to be desired when compared to the competition, at or below its' asking price, of which there are quite a few..
    No complaints regards the looks and performance. It is obviously a very good unit, but it needs to be said that the use prospect is limited due to the lack of I/O connectivity, IMHO..

    I think you oversold this one a little. Newer fiio and topping dacs all have EQ in the device.
