The app here is an essential part of the experience, much as in other FFG titles. A great feature is the Line of Sight Calculator. No more do you need a measuring tape or hand laser to determine LoS on the game map. Just click/tap two squares on the virtual map, and you get an instant yes or no. Also, as you read through the rules in the app, key topics are highlighted as links. Just click/tap those words and you'll get an extended definition of how they work in the game.
This is a wonderful game and I love how the app handles so much of the math and bookkeeping. My friend and I are about two-thirds of the way through it. We've been playing it controlling two heroes each. Scenarios run 3-4 hours. I'm eager for the second act.
If you look in the little beige box where it gives the type of item (weapon, consumable, armor etc) on the upgraded side there are two little arrows next to the type.
Not having a printed Rules Reference is not a great move. We found the Learn to Play frustrating in Journeys in Middle Earth, as it didn’t cover a bunch of stuff covered by the app. We used the Rules Reference a lot more but not having it in a physical form would making it harder to use at the table. Do they at least have the Rules Reference as a separate PDF, so it can be referenced separate to the app?
@@lukejw11 As you know, the extended rules in the app work through a branching series of topic links. It's more like a wiki-database than a rule book. I'm not sure a .PDF would be practical.
Each character has two sides, if you notice the ability is different (in the black box) everything else is the same. it's the primary way to get rid of fatigue
I love this game, it was my return to board games, right when it came out. It was the first miniatures I painted. It is kind of repetitive, I don't know how much replay there is in the game, but it's worth one go through. I really enjoyed building the terrain and painting the mini's which took it's own amount of time. The writing for the game the story felt a bit bland. The game play is repetitive, but if you crank the difficulty to actually make it difficult for you it feels better. If you're on easy mode and not having to think about your fatigue and when to flip cards over. you can easily get bored. but if you increase the difficulty to actually make the game challenging I think it's great.. Still could use a bit better writing. I can't wait for Part 2. we're supposed to get it this year.
@@BoardGameCo I also noticed as you were looking through the cards that the picture on the upgraded side has a whitish rune circle looking thing behind the object, which is not on the non-upgraded side
I generally agree, the minis feel "brittle" though I haven't experienced any issues with breaks, but it's also exclusively adults handling them. I can't figure out how they made these minis so high quality. There's one cultist type figure, that has these weird eye "stalks", that I can't figure out from a molding standpoint, how they even injected it like that. They'd have had to removed the molds from around those eye "stalks". Which is incredibly small, less than a MM or 2.
I have almost a full set of 2nd edition Descent including expansions and miniature add-ons. I always thought their miniatures were decent not just in their aesthetic but also in the variety of miniatures you got per set. However, Decent 3rd edition is not something I have any interest in. I don't want to play a game with an app. The cost to get into the game was significantly higher than 2nd edition. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on Decent 3rd. Maybe I am overlooking a great game due to my own reservations.
I own a lot of Descent 2 and Imperial Assault. These are great but the need to a player to be the GM was exhausting and burned out. When Descent: LOTD came out I had concerns and didn't back it. Since then, my friend and our kids have been having THE BEST TIME going through this and are "close"(?) to completing it. Just in time for Act 2. So excited! So wish they had a Star Wars version like this!!! Please and thank you ( looking at you, FFG).
All that dead air in the box WILL be necessary for storage. The Art seems like its predecessors, if not better IMHO, and minis are AMAZING quality. Hammer on dwarf and sword on paladin character may need reinforcement. Love the 3D structure, that is NOT a gimmic and wish more games were like this. Every layout is surprising, fresh, and well thoughout tactically.
Fkin love this game. Just seems a waste that it is app based but doesn’t have a scenario creator or any content added so I haven’t played since I finished the campaign
@@alcovitch ok, outside of the high price tag, what “sucks”? Because the only complaint i aee is that the game “sucks”. Never any actual feedback. To me, the game is superior to 2E in almost every way
@@ntmetroid i’ve heard these negatives mentioned explicitly by many people: infantile story, very repetitive game loop and limited variety of actions you can take (move, attack- your turn; move attack - your turn). Like many games, opinions vary but those are the negs. I’ve heard. Looking forward to painting the minis and building the terrain and giving the game a spin this year!
@@alcovitchYeah. Wife and I played through this. It was enjoyable enough, but rather shallow. We had fun and will play more when the expansions come. But, by the end we were ready for something with a bit more depth. I am now playing through the 2nd edition with my nieces and nephews. It seems pretty friggin' awesome. Definitely way more going on. But, only a couple of missions in. Hopefully it holds up over time.
FFG have always decent minis at the time they are released, though they have a much longer history than most companies so their early minis are not great quality compared to modern standards.
In terms of detail, these are FFGs best miniatures. I hope it's an indicator of the quality we'll see in future games. But, who knows, because it'll mean they can't just ship the games with a bagged minis and a cardboard trough for an insert. The game is fun, but Mansions of Madness and Journeys in Middle Earth are better. The scenarios that make use of the terrain are really fun.
One thing that sucks about the maker of this game...say, for example, your cats decide to run off with a miniature or 2. There is no way to buy replacement minis. I've contacted support and they just apologized. Luckily, my cats returned the missing minis a few weeks later. But, I was disappointed the only solution to get the same minis would be to buy another copy of the game. Still a fun game for a one-and-done experience.
I personally disagree. Especially compred to base descent(which i also love). Fully coop works better for my group, and i love the mechanic changes. My only real gripe is that no voice acting makes the dialogue awkward in a group. As a solo experience its my favorite dungeon crawl to date
Like the app integration, but the game is pretty terrible. Repetitive and bland with abysmal writing. The minis are good but the enemy design is uninspired. I like that they tried to make the characters complex, but the authors just didn't have the skill to make it work. A rare disappointment for FFG.

The dead air is for the assambeld stuff, and the sleeves are needed for the game (this is not a sample!)
Thanks!

I have this game and have yet to bring it to the table. I think I will bring it out this weekend.
Bottom of box for assembled terrain storage. Rules in app.

@@chrisroberts1654: Can the app handle it as a separate function? So you can continue to play while someone is checking the rules reference?

Got this game to use the terrain and minis for DND. Now that I look at it, seems like it's fun to play on it's own too!
