A perfect example of just how wonderful Rubinstein's technique was in his younger years. And it remained solid in his later years, even though his performances were never about technique.
The depth of tone is miraculous, and the power is elemental, though never seeming exaggerated.
He has been my favorite pianist for 56 years - and, while there are other contenders, I can't imagine anyone displacing him.

Such a small world! In 1965 we befriended pianist Chela Aguiar through her husband, violinist Stefan Nedelchev in Montevideo. Grandma Tinka, who was staying with us, knew Nedelchev's mother in Bulgaria. Chela showed us a photo of Arthur Rubinstein dedicated to her when she was a teenage pianist. Later I read that at age four Rubinstein met violinist Joseph Joachim, close friend of Brahms. Only three degrees of separation between us and Brahms!

Thanks - I hadn't realised he had recorded any Bach. He does it very well (I heard him 5 times in London). Transfers excellent.

Thanks for uploading/sharing. You should get an award! Rubinstein was self-deprecating re his technique, but it was superb as the occasion demanded. The Moscow recitals in his later years were miraculous. But AR, realized as few pianists do, even professionals, that elevated technique was only a means to an end, to render the composer's musical ideas transparently/persuasively.

Fabulous! In places this reminds me a bit of Gould, especially in the Adagio, a comparison I would never in a million years have imagined making before listening to this...

It is magnificent, but somehow not the piece for Rubinstein, who doesn't seem much interested in the different "organ registration" ideas that it offers. In parts he is more operatic than organ-like. I once heard Cherkassky play this as the opening piece in a recital, and he had the opposite (and more polyphonic) approach. Sitting on the Festival Hall platform, in front of the organ, he seemed to be creating the idea of an organ out of his own aural imagination, a feat I have never forgotten.

Sigh.......the great Rubinstein--the great one from Eisenach and, of course, the great Ferruccio Busoni.

If you click below the player window to 'read more', it says EMI's Abbey Road Studio No.3 - that was in London.
