Thanks so much for this extended video and all your thought and process. It is greatly appreciated. I recently began painting on watercolor paper. I was priming it with gesso and about three to four coats. Thanks for the tip to put a coat of oil base priming too. I have been doing studies on canvas boards. I find them easier to work with oil paints. These studies are usually gifts that I decided to do. I’m thinking in doing them again on canvas for my home. I greatly appreciate your time, effort, knowledge and experience in your videos. I subscribed to your channel and I admire our contents. One thing I struggle with at times are backgrounds for certain themes. How would you choose a background for a portrait? I wish you all the best and more for each day. Blessings and take care. ❤❤❤
Backgrounds are tricky! If I'm not painting a specific scene, I try to choose colours that are somewhat visible in the skin, and amplify them, if that makes sense. Happy painting and thank you for subscribing!
That was amazing to watch! Very interesting and learned a lot about your use of colors for the shadows. Also watch you paint in real time was interesting, I often paint to fast 😅 Curious to know, did you only used two brushes? And you didn’t clean them in between the colors?
I prefer oil ground because it is less absorbent than gesso, which allows the first layer of oil paint to slip around more easily. This is just personal preference but for me it makes a huge difference.
you are an excellent painting teacher!
Thank you very much!
Just stumbled on your channel. Such a pleasant surprise! Subscribed.
Thanks Nicole

What is the advantage or reason you prefer oil ground vs gesso?
