I think the funny part about all this is that the Doctor isn't one of those oblivious protagonists who are entirely unaware of lovey feelings towards him, he's a bit dense, but he'll pick up on these things right away if the signs are there. He just puts his work over romance because he's a serious workaholic.

The snake is the healthiest relationship. The horse gives the assistants, the mermaid gives him a kohai, the bird gives him immortality, the spider ruins everything, the giant gives him a great personality to fall for. The dragon is the endgame.

Yeah, even I was saying "This is just Monster Musume but with a straight-faced doctor, instead of a dopy, absent-minded, kind-hearted slacker." However, that being said, it's all a matter of storytelling and characters. Stories can have similar set-ups and settings (we'd only have maybe 1/3ed of the stuff we do if literally, everything had to be 100% original... though, we wouldn't have 500 different anime set within a high school at the same time.) and what they can bring to the table that makes it more it's own thing.
