  • Solve high battery drain issue by disabling comfort access handle wiring.
    Update: make sure to cut all 3 wires connecting the comfort access handle, not just the middle wire.

    This solved my problem for the passenger rear door which was causing a battery drain. Very quick and easy. Comfort access still works on the drivers side doors although the front passenger side does not seem to be working.

    Wow, worked just as you show, except the "cam" connection was a bugger. Finally figured out that you could pull the cam out and it would lock enough to make the door handle attach. Great video, big help. No more battery drain. I expect that my driver door does not respond to touch for opening or locking, because this little repair had been done to that door handle also! We refer to my BMW as "Big Money Wasted." I love the car , but it is WAY over engineered.

    Cutting all three wires did work for me. After searching the BMW forums I was able to debug my problem. While cutting the wires I must have shorted out something and blew a fuse that caused the CA, radio and other items to stop working. For those with the same issue it was fuse #132.

      You actually cut all three wires on the door? I thought his example said cut only the middle wire dot-dot-dot now I'm kind of confused. I was also trying to figure out whether or not this function had to be done for all four doors that just feels so excessive

    Thanks so much for this, just removed the Comfort access handle on my driver side rear. Instead of cutting the wire, I just unplugged mine and zip tied the plug to the harness. No more battery drain warning!

      yup and now you can take your time actually buying the new handle and replacing it because cutting wires on a bmw just doesn't feel right as far as I'm concerned.

    Have you experienced this at all?

    The three wires send power and signal to/from the circuit board embedded in the handle. The circuit board fails and heats up causing battery drain. Cutting all three wires de-energizes the faulty circuit board from battery power, solving the battery drain issue. This disables comfort access on any handle the wiring is cut.

      Thank you so much for this DIY. My driver side handle on my ‘13 E70 was super hot. I was getting 102 degree reading & I had the high battery drain message. I cut all 3 wires & wrapped them separate in electrical tape. I’m good to go now.

    Did this 'fix' resolve your battery drain issue to date?

    • @ballstondiy2101
      @ballstondiy2101  5 лет назад +7

      Yes. Disabling comfort access on the 2 door handles (both on passenger side) that were getting hot resolved the battery drain issue. I realize some may view this as not “fixing” the problem since I am not replacing the bad comfort access handles, but since I am not willing to spend $ on a feature I don’t care about, especially on the passenger side; I am calling my solution a fix, a no-cost fix.

    I have a F82 2015 BMW M4 that uses a lithium ion battery. Every time I start the car I get “increased battery discharge” I contacted my local BMW dealer and some tuner shops and they all tried to charge me $1900+ for the new lithium ion battery. That is just crazy stupid... I am wondering if I can put in a normal battery that matches all the specs to my oem battery in the car. Please help me out

    I bought a 12 X5 and the comfort access was not working, it actually had black electrical potting seal dripping down the r-rear door handle, it looked like tar and smelled of burned electronics. I did watch this video to see what these handles were about. I also found a blown fuse for the access system in the rear panel. It still didn't work and I found the driver door handle getting warm, I switched it with the rear handle and cut the wire, now I just have the front doors working which is fine.

      Thank you for pointing out the left handles are interchangeable, I too swapped my broken driver front handle with the rear left handle. Then I proceeded to cut all three wires from the handle connector since cutting only the middle wire disabled all handles. Once all three wires on broken rear handle were cut, the remaining three handles comfort access worked and high battery discharge warning was gone. Thank you

    • @ballstondiy2101
      @ballstondiy2101  4 года назад

      I did not check amp draw. Handles heating up was how I knew they had failed and needed to be disconnected or replaced. I chose to simply disconnect the two comfort access handles on the passenger side and I haven’t had a problem since.

    Having same issue I think but why in the world would you cut these wires? Why not just replace the whole handle? That’s what BMW says to do. Once you cut wires in the harness that things done for

      To me it’s now a 9yr old vehicle with 107k mikes worth $6,500 trade in at a dealership. I just wanted to stop the battery from draining, and I don’t care about comfort access especially since the two door handles that were malfunctioning are both on the the passenger side. Driver and driver rear comfort access still works. This is a zero cost fix, good trade off to simply eliminate comfort access on side never likely used for basic function critical to every day operation of vehicle (battery with charge).

      I just took apart mine today. The wire he cut is actually on the handle side (not the harness side) Since the handle is no longer working anyway it's no big deal in my opinion. One could always just order a new handle to plug into. I opted to just unplug mine.
