I am a 14 year old girl from Russia writing this comment on November 10, 2024. I learned about this book when I was on a trip to Turkey with my family during the summer holidays. We went to a book fair and they bought it for me. Reading was a bit difficult for me because I don't fully understand English (I write comments with the help of a translator), but well enough to understand what is happening. And I really liked it. Let's just say that I like books and films about how people with disabilities see the world. And reading about Christopher's misadventures was quite fascinating. Probably because I was touched by him (although he would never do that, if you know what I mean). Of course, Chris is far from an angel, but he was just born that way and it is not his fault. In my opinion, Mr. Haddon perfectly conveyed how people with autism react to everyday things that we do not attach importance to. I was able to feel myself in Christopher's body. And it's wonderful when a person understands such things. I hope you won't regret reading this book either.
I hope this can help somebody. Christopher's autism affects him every day in various ways. One example from the book is when Chris has a black day. “The next day I saw 4 yellow cars in a row on the way to school, which made it a Black Day, so i didn’t eat anything at lunch and I sat in the corner of the room all day and read my A-level maths course book(pg53).” This rule has affected his whole day in a negative way but if he sees 3 or 4 red cars he gets a super good day. Something else that changes the way Chris lives from the average Joe’s is that he does not have conversations with people he doesn’t know. Here is an example of him refusing to chat with a neighbor. “And she said, ‘I see you everyday going to school.’ I didn’t reply to this. And she said, ‘It’s very nice of you to come and say hello.’ I didn’t reply to this either because Mrs. Alexander was doing what is called chatting, where people say things to each other which aren’t questions and answers and aren’t connected(pg 39-40).” This aspect of aspergers has a bad effect on Christophers social life. The last example is that Chris is negatively affected by bright lights and constraint loud noise and unexpected things. This makes school somewhat hard for him and busy public places very hard to function in. In this quote he gives a descriptive example of how he feels when he's scared in a public place. “And it was like standing on a cliff in a really strong wind because it made me feel giddy and sick because there were lots of people walking into and out of the tunnel and it was really echoey and there was only one way to go and it was down the tunnel, and it smelled of toilets and cigarettes(pg145).” In conclusion, symptoms of aspergers syndrome affect Christopher almost every day.
This book...man this book. I have autism, and it doesn't affect me nearly as much as Christopher, but I can relate to him. I understand how feels so much. It's so difficult to be understood when you're younger. And it's so difficult to understand others at times. The author is brilliant. He explains what goes on in the minds of many people with autism when they encounter a world that is normally less literal than their brains. And it adds so much to the story. It told a story in a unique way that could only be achieved by this narrative style. This book made me feel so many emotions. It is one of my all-time favorite books and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.
Ya know something really really weird though. For a guy who has such a good understanding of high functioning autism, Hadden has admitted that his knowledge can most accurately be called bare bones as he's only read a handful of books by autistic people\those on the spectrum or books about autism, Asperger's spectrum etc. Hallmark of a good writer when they can use thier very limited knowledge of a subject as complex as learning disabilities and not make it a stereotype or a caricature.

I'm 25, I just listen to audiobooks every day to help me concentrate at work. This is the first children's book among them but it was easily the best and most compelling
I accidentally started my summer reading assignment just a week before school and picked up this book from the library and thought " HOW AM I GONNA READ ALL THIS IN ONLY A WEEK OMG" and I found this video, put the speed to 1.5 and ended up finishing the book in a day!!!AHH THANK YOU
Haha I feel you, I've got dsylexia and reading my own name is a struggle sometimes this audio book is a LIFESAVER Edit: dyslexia? is that how it's spelled I don't even know the proper name of my own diagnosis
As a high school English teacher assigned to delve into this wonderful novel, THIS download has been invaluable to me and my students! Thank you for posting this!
Do you ever think what’s it’s like for people who’s brains don’t work in the same way as most? To be treated almost as if your an alien? You need to read this, so you can learn about other people & how they differ. Then hopefully you might not grow up to be such a judgmental idiot, in trying to understand those that are not as fortunate as you. Keep reading & learning, you’ll be amazed that the more you know the easier life will be( I hope) good luck👍🦋
@@julielevinge266 Well actually the reason I decided to read this book was because I have Asperger’s just like the protagonist. But that didn’t really make it much more enjoyable for me
I read this book years ago in school and here I am revisiting the story because it just stuck with me. There was something about the main character I could deeply relate to, even tho I am not very much like him, as he describes himself. There is something about the core feeling of the story that made me feel weirdly understood when I was younger. Very nice that I can now listen to a book for my pure enjoyment.
I was not expecting this when I started reading a murder story about a dog. It made me feel so many things, it was great to see the world from a different perspective. I do feel angry at the adult though, especially the mom. Bringing adult problems into this boy's world, like he's not struggling enough. Made me think of so many other kids out there who won't succeed in school because of the parents' arguing at home, or being toxic, or emotional vampires...
@@mcrackabros2099 I think it's either a fictional character or somebody who feeds off the attention given to them from people who just care about others who they think are hurt. It's their supply because seeing people care like that makes them feel validated and seen and safe and sound but they probably have their own sick way of feeling this way due to trauma or boredom. They are very gross people to be around and internally they, metaphorically, just suck. Suck the life out of you

I have Autism and I have to read this next year but my mum got asked by he teacher if I would be comfortable reading it in class. Mum decided I should read it to make absolutely sure. My mum is a teacher at the school I go to.
I am listening to this to help my niece with her summer assignment. The main character reminds me of my husband with aspergers. Super intelligent, but not so socially intelligent. So much of this kid's trouble with the world could be helped by people being direct with him, especially his father who knows of his issues personally.
I've read this about 5years ago in grade 12 for a English class. This book was one of the list of books we could read for our final essay. I didn't really understand the meaning of why it was on the list, until this year. I've realized that our English teacher probably put it on the list so that we're more aware of people with autism and know how they think so that we can do more research to help. I don't remember much, but I appreciate my teacher for having a meaning behind why she chose this book.
Really love this book, afraid u tube didn’t exist when I was at school. But glad it’s helping all those with reading assignments. Doesn’t matter how you get the information, in fact it’s easier to concentrate when listening, I’d find I’d been day dreaming for last few chapters so had to go back & read it all again. Autism is only quite recently been recognised, makes me really feel for those that suffered from it! Can’t imagine how hard life must have been( still is) as most have no idea what this means.
Having Autism Really is hard. especially as a person with Autism, it makes me feel like im a total idiot to very simple concepts and when i try so harf to follow along with others i just feel ike they agree but they really dont agree.
I listened to this with my baby, he’s 4 with autism. He is level 1, but the insight posed in this book is helpful to me. I wanna be the best mom for him. He’s amazing.
I had to read/listen to this book for school and I really was expecting it to be boring as fuck because it was for school, but it was a beautiful story and it made me tear up when it ended. Thank you for uploading the audiobook, it was a real experience.
Well he skips chapters like that because the boy likes prime numbers because he can understand them better and this is based on the book he wrote for the story so he used prime numbers for the chapters
@Moth’s Mummy They never said they themselves didn't understand, they never even referred to themselves- the subject they were talking about was there mother, not them. So you don't know whether they were listening to the story or not.
This guy is a terrific reader, he does a great job altering his voice for each character, so why the constant 'he said, she said, he said, she said, ' etc etc etc. for every little quote exchange. It would be wonderfully refreshing to hear a narrative from a reader you gets it. He said she said they said, repeated over and over just ruins the listening experience. Oh well, love this book.
You do understand this is an audiobook, don't you? That means the reader is actually reading the text of the original book. If the reader were to delete all of the "he said", "she said", etc. it would cause copywrite issues and present legal problems for the producers of this audiobook. Perhaps you would enjoy radio plays instead of audiobooks.
@ anyone doing this for a book test/assignment, here's some questions to answer added to the end of my book; they might help out :) (they're also just pretty interesting things to think about, even if you don't have anything to do for school with it) !! SPOILER WARNING !! "Think about this … 1) What do you think of Christopher’s deadpan style of narration? Do you think it’s funny? Confusing? Shocking? 2) Christopher has many ways of organizing the world and making it ‘simpler’. Think about his various routines and categories, and think about why Christopher needs them - what do they help him understand and deal with? 3) Christopher says that fiction is just another way of telling lies. Do you agree? 4) There are maps and drawings throughout the book, and some of them are brands or signs that you might recognize. Why do you think Mark Haddon included all these images and do you think they help you see things the way Christopher does? 5) Do you think Christopher is intelligent? 6) Think about Christopher’ s relationships with other characters in the book - his father, his mother, Siobhan, his teachers. Who do you think understands Christopher best? 7) Why do you think Christopher’ s father told him his mother was dead? 8) When Christopher discovers who killed Wellington, he becomes afraid of his father. Do you think Christopher's father is someone to be afraid of? 9) What do you think of Christopher's mother? Do you blame her for leaving Christopher and his father? 10) Various people apologize to Christopher during the novel. Do you think Christopher understands apologies, and do you think he can forgive people? 11) Think about the way Mark Haddon describes Christopher's journey to London. Do you think seeing this journey through Christopher's eyes makes it more upsetting or scary? 12) Christopher says his book is a mystery story. Do you think there are any mysteries left unsolved at the end of the novel?"
This has been really helpful to me as I can timestamp parts I want to go back to to further my analysis of the novel in preparation for my English extension 2 major work on neurodivergency. I've only seen the play before but being able to listen to and immerse myself in the whole story provides me with a new light on autism and the autism spectrum. It also helps with my ADHD, so I'm able to listen to the book and work on other things if I'm struggling to focus. Thank you so much for posting it!!
I got a tiny concussion yesterday and I'm not able to watch a screen or read for a few days, so it's great to instead have someone read a book for me :)
I'm German and I have to read this book in German haha but I can English relatively well I'll listen to it shortly before the end of the Easter holidays haha I'm a genius. Thank you :)
Honestly had to binge read this two nights before the final quiz, was gonna split it between two days but it was honestly pretty alright so I listened to it in one go. 👌🏻
Thank god this exists, I have to read this book over the summer for an assignment my new school gave me. I like reading, but I have so much to do this summer break and can't find the time to read it myself. On top of that, I have ADD which makes it so much harder to sit down and do one thing at a time. Thank you for the video!
my school never allowed us to lend books for over a schoolweek so i never could fully read this book. i always tried to read it while in our library however it always closed soon after i got out of class. so it was really nice to hear the full story online
listened to this to make a presentation tonight and present it to my class 1st lesson tomorrow, the book i have is in french so i was translating as i go along but i find this book amazing, don't have a clue how i'm going to present it without giving away any spoilers though, i don't know what my favorite part of the book is ( i have to read a page out to the class) wish me luck, sorry for the typos i'm very busy it's 10pm and i'm supposed to be asleep, have 4 tests to study for after i learnt my presentation; another sleepless night for me i guess.
What an amazing book! I had to read it for school and i wasn’t very sure at first because school books suck but OMG this one is amazing. The ending is so beautiful, i feel so proud of Christopher. Really, i love this, amazing.
I’m directing the stage version later this year. I wanted to read the book to have a better appreciation for it, but have so little time to sit and read. This has been great for my commute to and from work :)
People are just talking about the fact that people have got bookmarks written down in the comments. This book is so heartbreaking. At the end, i was literally tearing up.
Yes it is heartbreaking. A mother who abandon her husband and son. And the father who is treated like a monster. I can't even imagine the pain he's suffering😭
My mom bought this back in 2003 for a road trip. And it was the funniest experience of my life. We were young and theres a lot of swearing... Plus my dad thinks British accents are funny. Theres one line where hes describing the feeling of peeing himself.... Ughhhg funniest shit ever :') Good times

I'm 25, I just listen to audiobooks every day to help me concentrate at work. This is the first children's book among them but it was easily the best and most compelling
"Children's book"
@@bossinater43 Fr this book isn’t that child friendly 😂 as it seems
This is not a children's book. This is a coming-of-age, mystery novel. In fact, this book is banned in many schools for its vulgarity.
I accidentally started my summer reading assignment just a week before school and picked up this book from the library and thought " HOW AM I GONNA READ ALL THIS IN ONLY A WEEK OMG" and I found this video, put the speed to 1.5 and ended up finishing the book in a day!!!AHH THANK YOU
That sounds helpful
How do u put speed to 1.5

As a high school English teacher assigned to delve into this wonderful novel, THIS download has been invaluable to me and my students! Thank you for posting this!
They are not your students. They are students.
Wow! Such profound wisdom! Thank you for making that distinction! I shall never again refer to my students as my students!@@words911
I’d like this book a lot more if I wasn’t forced to read it. Summer reading sucks the fun out of everything for me
Do you ever think what’s it’s like for people who’s brains don’t work in the same way as most? To be treated almost as if your an alien? You need to read this, so you can learn about other people & how they differ.
Then hopefully you might not grow up to be such a judgmental idiot, in trying to understand those that are not as fortunate as you.
Keep reading & learning, you’ll be amazed that the more you know the easier life will be( I hope) good luck👍🦋

Was it all really a Dream?
I was not expecting this when I started reading a murder story about a dog.
It made me feel so many things, it was great to see the world from a different perspective.
I do feel angry at the adult though, especially the mom. Bringing adult problems into this boy's world, like he's not struggling enough. Made me think of so many other kids out there who won't succeed in school because of the parents' arguing at home, or being toxic, or emotional vampires...
What’s a emotional vampire
@@mcrackabros2099 I think it's either a fictional character or somebody who feeds off the attention given to them from people who just care about others who they think are hurt. It's their supply because seeing people care like that makes them feel validated and seen and safe and sound but they probably have their own sick way of feeling this way due to trauma or boredom. They are very gross people to be around and internally they, metaphorically, just suck.
Suck the life out of you

I am listening to this to help my niece with her summer assignment. The main character reminds me of my husband with aspergers. Super intelligent, but not so socially intelligent. So much of this kid's trouble with the world could be helped by people being direct with him, especially his father who knows of his issues personally.
His father helps him. He's the only one who understand him
I've read this about 5years ago in grade 12 for a English class.

Can’t imagine how hard life must have been( still is) as most have no idea what this means.
hi i’m so sorry to ask u that but can u tell me like the message about the story like if it’s love hate perseverance… plsssss
Having Autism Really is hard. especially as a person with Autism, it makes me feel like im a total idiot to very simple concepts and when i try so harf to follow along with others i just feel ike they agree but they really dont agree.
I have autism

I had to read/listen to this book for school and I really was expecting it to be boring as fuck because it was for school, but it was a beautiful story and it made me tear up when it ended. Thank you for uploading the audiobook, it was a real experience.
my mum: “wHy iS hE SkiPpInG cHaPtErS”
Hahahaha
wait why is he?
Alexandra Friedland he likes prime numbers
Also the “He said” and “She said” and so on and so forth builds Christopher’s practical character. Also the book is Unabridged
Because that's how the author wrote the book and because Christopher has aspergers so he list everything
Thank you. Lovely narrator's voice.
really???.Is that you complain 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
somebody doesnt understand the meaning of AUDIOBOOK
@ anyone doing this for a book test/assignment, here's some questions to answer added to the end of my book; they might help out :)
(they're also just pretty interesting things to think about, even if you don't have anything to do for school with it)
!! SPOILER WARNING !!
"Think about this …
1) What do you think of Christopher’s deadpan style of narration?
I didn't read this book for an assignment but these questions were really interesting and made me think more about the book. Thank you.
Christopher's constant hatred of France is peak British comedy

This has been really helpful to me as I can timestamp parts I want to go back to to further my analysis of the novel in preparation for my English extension 2 major work on neurodivergency. I've only seen the play before but being able to listen to and immerse myself in the whole story provides me with a new light on autism and the autism spectrum. It also helps with my ADHD, so I'm able to listen to the book and work on other things if I'm struggling to focus. Thank you so much for posting it!!

you saved my holiday I needed to read this book thanks a lot!
Hi! I just wanted to say thank you, this really helped me get through the book, and enjoy it more!
