There are even people working full-time jobs who either can’t afford rent or choose to live in a tent because if they did pay rent it would take every penny they do make. The homeless tend to go where it’s warm because at least then they won’t freeze to death in the winter. The Mayor from Santa Monica said this morning that what Gavin Newsom is doing only applies to 'state owned' property, such as encampments along the freeways. What the SCOTUS did applies to the cities. The way he explained it is that the cities have the authority to address the issues, they just haven't developed a plan to set in motion yet. I used to work construction. We built a house or large building relatively quickly once all the planning and stuff was finished. Any Mayor can quickly end crime when they want to. The opposite is also true. Individuals can quickly ruin a building if the city lets them. If a state keeps giving a Mayor money to fix homelessness, then he/she is never going to fix the homelessness. The Mayor has to be told that if the businesses don't make money, then the city won't get any tax revenue.

I wonder what it would take for the US to adopt a housing model like the UK. Just counting the homeless veterans, there are too many people living outside. Some choose to, but many don't. What people don't understand is starting from $0 at a shelter to being able to afford everything (phone, electric, rent, transportation, food, clothing, washer/dryer (most apartments now are coin op), etc.). Most shelters have a limited stay time well below the time to establish this. Also, imagine being crammed into a max capacity shelter where staff are poorly trained. Theft, drug use, violence, etc are usually common. And shelters need to keep beds full to maintain funding. There is a reason most shelters have a below 40% success rate on permanent housing. If you want to be shocked, look up shelter details, like food waste, operation costs, and other financials. Most shelters have to publicly publish their tax filings as they are non profit (supposedly). Follow the money. I look at shelters like I do jails. More beds full = more money, yet the problem still exists.

I agree that tents should not be allowed to be set up on city streets. But there should be something in place to house people that can't afford to pay rent. If the homeless just absolutely want to live in a tent, then there should be someplace, a field for example away from the city limits for them to set up their tent and live happily ever after. I don't think they should be able to set up anywhere within the city. If they want to live in an uncivilized manner, then they can do it away from civilization.

The best thing the government can do is to build more small and affordable spaces for these downtrodden people, get them set up with a skillset and a job they can do, give them support to get off whatever drugs they are on. and move them out of the small facility after the people are on their feet and can afford a bigger place.

Its NOT a California problem...it's a nation wide cost of living/affordable housing/addiction problem. If Minnesota had California's climate then that is where the problem would be. We'll just keep on being enslaved by the rich though. C'est la vie!!

I live in the south and we've been seeing a big up tick in homeless and panhandling. I stopped and asked a few if they would come to work because who knows what happened and just needed a kind hand. No not a single 1 would come to work for my company. They just want free things. Stop giving them things. You are enabling their addiction. My uncle was an alcoholic that became homeless due to his alcoholism. These people need mental health care and aren't getting it. There's so much trash that gets left behind by a lot of them. It's disgusting I worry about others catching diseases from the trash and excretion left behind.

The same way that America wants to stick immigrants on the bus back to where they came from California should do to the homeless and I guarantee you they will practically all be gone because none of them are from California. Of course there’s a handful of them, but they are all from other states they come here because this is the greatest state regardless of how expensive it is to live can’t beat the weather, mountains the beaches, the Hot Springs etc. not to mention that they do take advantage of California social services. but of course, this is America and as an American you can live anywhere you want California just has the dumb luck to be the place everybody wants to be.
