    Leif Erickson actually did land in the province Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He made friends with the local first nation people there and probably smoked. I must admit, I was a little surprised when I found out ''Askeladden'' was depicted as a villian in an anime, I grew up with stop motion films based around the original tales! The only evil thing I can remember that he ever did was when he tricked a troll to stab himself! x)

      @sofiaormbustad7467 3 года назад +25

      Tbf he did some pretty fucked up things in the other, original fairytales. And Henrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" was literary a parody on Askeladden, showing the worst sides about norwegians and awarding them for it. Peer Gynt literary ran away from his fiance on the night before their wedding night, then she waited 40 years for Peer Gynt to just out of nowhere return (after making alot of money in the opium trade and "civilizing" in China and literary slave trade in Africa). Idk if he did marry her in their like 70s to live happily ever after, after all the evil crap Peer Gynt did, or he told his wife she was a stupid ass bitch for wasting her life on someone who didn't even love her, but yeah. I love Peer Gynt and I love the original norwegian folk tales and their just, mythology and remnants from the viking age.

    Something they skipped in Vinland Saga was the role of poetery to the old Norse. Poetry was GIGANORMOUS in the viking world. It was an oral culture where the skald and poetry was tv, the movies, high culture and low culture, history department, legal department, everything. They could create poetry on the fly and they would memorize stories of enormous length and complexity.
    It might have been the right choice to skip poetry, from a story telling perspective. Just thought I should mention it.

    Yeah, this anime is amazingly historically accurate, but one point: the Wales. It is not credible that Welsh warriors of the eleventh century would have used Roman armors and ships. What was Roman Britannia did not survived the retirement of the Roman legions and the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons, more than 500 years before the story told in the Vinland saga. Therefore, that part is totally anachronistic.

    • @miche9611
      @miche9611 Год назад +2

      @@zephyrr108 Come on. At that time, not even the remnant of the Roman Empire used the antiquate armors, garments and ships showed in Vinland saga. Those were used during the first two centuries of the Roman Empire, but later gradually dismissed. At the time the legions left Britannia, they were not in use anymore, if not for ceremonies by the elites in Rome and Costantinople.
      Besides this, the Wales were part of the Roman province of Britannia where people were less accustomed with Roman civilization. That part of Britain was the first in which the signs of Roman civilization disappeared after the legions left, 500 years before the time of the settings of Vinland saga.

    • @LeadenMarshmallow

      You make a good point but there were a few places sprinkled throughout Britain where the local lords made a big deal about continuing the legacy of Rome and having Roman ancestors. Just a sidenote at 12:25. Scania (skåne) was part of Denmark at that time. Similarly, it would be like describing Jutland as a different region to Denmark when in fact it's all Denmark. When talking about Sweden, as in Cnut the Great also ruled parts of Sweden, it's pretty much the area of todays Sweden besides Skåne. The map however makes Scania bigger than it actually was, is.

    My guess of how it will play out:
    The Norse settlers get into a conflict with the natives. Thorfinn realizes the fallen nature of man, as long as there are humans, there will always be war. He leaves Vinland and is reintroduced to the Gospel, so he decides that the land of peace he seeks can only be attainable in Heaven, then converts to Christianity. He goes back home, meets up with Canute, builds a church, and years later his grandsons are ordained as bishops. Also, Canute gets into a fallout with Wulf.
    Sounds plausible considering who the real Thorfinn’s descendants were, plus all the clues appearing in the Farmland arc (the lamb, conversation on being born again, Thorfinn listening into a Bible reading).

    • @BatTCK
      @BatTCK 3 года назад +3

      I really hope Thorfinn converts. Another thing that supports this theory is Hild, whose father’s last words to her were: “Later on, when you feel like the hatred and anger threaten to crush your soul, remember the teachings of Christ. Forgive your fellow man, for forgiveness is your only salvation.” I believe that if she forgives Thorfinn (perhaps for the colony’s failure), Thorfinn may end up converting due to her forgiveness for his numerous transgressions

      That’s what I’m thinking. I’m about to start book 10 but the only way the journey to Vinland can end is in failure. Historically, thorfinns child is born in Vinland but they end up leaving.
      I think he realizes at the end the only heaven one can build in within themselves. It would be a nice message. It’s not about religion but about finding that peace within yourself and with the people around you. A great end to his arc.

    Prediction for the ending of Vinland Saga:
    Snorri who is older and now a missionary, is telling stories about Vinland that were told to him by his father Thorfinn to a group of small children
    in Normandy. One of those small kids is absolutely fascinated by the story but the other kids make fun of him and call him a bastard.
    Snorri asks the kid what his real name is and the kids tells him "William".
    Yeah I know it's not the most historically accurate thing but again neither is the manga and it would be a pretty epic way to end the series.

    Heres another fact tho the name Thor and kell is actually the english trasnlation for Tor and kjell so originaly the characters names is actually
    Torfinn
    Tor
    Torkjell
    And for cnut his name is actually spelled with an K not an C in norse so cnuts name is Knut in norse
    Just some small facts there for ya as i am norse my self i am from norway so i easly know what the characters actual names are😉
