I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. 19 year old Mariah was able to do the vocal equivalent of a somersault into a double backflip followed by a pirouette into a triple flip and nail the landing. She did it with such ease and emotion, we were all stunned. It makes sense that 50 year old Mariah is nervous. If she botches it, the general public has proven to be pretty harsh with her. There's also RUclips now where everyone gets to edit and dissect the flaws. I'd be so nervous. So kudos to her for being able to even perform. Out of all the 90's divas (Celine, Whitney), I do think Mariah's catalog has the hardest technical difficulty.
I think the general public is more harsh on fakers these days.
@@reddragonready true. so i suppose she deserves it. but as she gets up there in age, I can also understand why she might be tempted to fake it. they will be harsh if she fakes it, and they will be harsh if she goes live and can't quite pull off the acrobatics she got up to in her prime.
@@matthewramsay1190 Unfortunately she started doing the lipping well before age became a possible excuse. And there is a third option..adapt her material to her present abilities. People might still be harsh but she will know she didn't deserve it in that case.
reddragonready she has adapted to her vocal conditions these days, but people like you are still being a bunch of judgmental jackasses, consistently saying that she can’t sing her old materials anymore. So she decided to do them, and you are still unhappy and still bitch about it, insulting her from her weight to her age. The woman went to get a gastric sleeve ffs, that means she knows what awful mean insults people like you have been saying online about her. I mean God forbid if Mariah, Kelly Clarkson, or Christina gained 10 lb, suddenly they’re a “porky”, or “whale” or “cow”. Oh the lip sync thing is quite common for any singers, so let’s not get too critical on that point. Although I want to add that Mariah’s songs are usually layered on top of layered on top of layered on top of her main singing voice. It’s literally not humanly possible to sing her songs and do all the harmonies and the background notes while belting her main lyrics. Unless she has 3 other mouths that we didn’t know of, she has to resort to backtrack vocal period. She rarely lip the WHOLE entire songs, she had in the past, but rarely, but I had noticed that she usually did it more when she’s performing abroad. Maybe she would like to take the safe route, cause she’s not familiar with the sound system, or mic, or whatever. I don’t work for her, can’t really pinpoint the main reason for her doing that. So I have a question, if you don’t like Mariah, why are you here? You literally spent so much time posting comments after comments, and replying to multiple comments here, just to bash on her. Are you that lonely that you have to insult people that you don’t even know online, or start a fight with other RUclipsr? Life gotta suck so bad for you to be that bitter. everyone can claim anything bad about her.. but she is still there at the top... nothing happens.. she is still the greatest vocalist and each and every vocal critic will still be in awe for her.. your idols can never be
The pressure of how people treat her is what makes her a bit stiff on stage... If people jam with her and support her instead of drag her down, she would be more happy and confident...

Can remember in her prime, these songs were already difficult. The nervousness is “can I live up to this now?”. Mariah can sing and we give her too much criticism.
The reason why she holds the mic a little far is because of her power and insane resonance.
im pretty sure she lost her confidence because of the continuous bad press. Mariah's image nowadays is dirty and young people associate it with bad singing, lip syncing and disasters. a shame, but at least her millions of fans appreciate what she can still do. love your input💕

Kind of agreed with you, she is kinda tone-down a little bit in her attitude, not so much diva-ish anymore in compare with herself 5 or 6 years ago esp during her beef with Nicki Minaj and JLo. I like her better now, altho I must say that her voice has deteriorated very much nowadays. She can still sing good, but not every time.
You are absolutely correct .
I actually think that because we're fans we usually hear about the bad stuff, but talking to a few young people that are not exposed as much to all that stuff, they seem to still associate her with a really good voice. You can even see it on the episodes of "Do They Know It?" on the React channel. They're just not as aware of all the recent stuff, good or bad, but I still think most people associate her with being really a great vocalist.
The reason why she is so “stressed” looking on stage is because of the extreme hate over her performances these last few years, therefore she is not relaxed due to constantly feeling pressured on stage.
Well observed. She sounds amazing & her voice is in great health atm. Her consistency, tone, runs, belting have all been on point. Recently she also looks so much more comfortable than she has in the past few years so I pray that stage confidence she use to have comes back as she starts feeling more relaxed as she doesn't need to worry about voice now, just to keep that beautiful instrument in good health.
She can definitely still sing.
Ok your review is on point here + your comment on her loss of confidence. She starts to gain it again this year though, compare her performance of the same song at early 2017 and you'll see.

scared? definitely not. we (asian lambs) showed her our greatest support for her and made her feel most comfortable. it was a ballad and requires a serious emotions so of course you won't see her smiling throughout the song. she did really well in her asian tour and we are so joyous that she appreciated and loved asia.
Even at that Mariah has stage fright.

for someone who's been singing nonstop, working in the studio till the morning if she's not on tour, for almost all her life, while dealing with nodules. this is Amazing job! i agree she lost her confidence, you're also right there is anxiety, she's recently came out with a bipolar disorder she's been keeping to herself since 2001, it must be really hard for her. plus anxiety and depression can really affects your voice and overall health.. but she's back on her feet now, she's a fighter, and i believe some of that confidence is coming back! she can def still sing! watched her in Manila last October and she slayed all of us! Her voice declined, no doubt about it. But her sence of melody (I don't know the right word for this, english is not my first language) is still here. And I think it's always been her greatest quality (with the range, of course)
MUSICALITY!!!! PHRASING!!!! BUT HER CHEST POWER IS THICKER STRONGER THAN YOUNG AGE!!! ALTHO she cant hit high chest voice as younger age....BUT WHITNEY did not do great at her later age too....well....
Her tonal quality declined but her musicality ability to improvise becam stronger with years ....Thats what still makes her special

@@mcfanrobinhood YEAH! One of the strongest qualities of Mariah is her musicality. Just listen to 'vision of love' through the years, she's been adapting the song whenever her voice was changing.

Mariah fell several years ago and broke her arm and ribs very badly! Ever since she if you pay attention when she walks she's always holding on to someone!. It started they around 2012
Seriously? If she moves like that because she fell and broke something 6 years ago..possibly she needs some psychotherapy? That would be fearful to a hampering point and is called an anxiety disorder.
But after she broke her arm she did do a concert and was singing beautifully live without any problem. You must also understand she was in a bad situation with her crazy management and was suffering with Bipolar disorder so she might've had an off couple of years because of that and being hurt plus her vocal nodules wasn't allowing her to sing fully at times

She always had stage fear, it just was less evident on her vocal prime.
She used to have it, but she lost that fear long ago, otherwise she wouldn't tour every year.
She just had to tv performances and they were definitely live.

I think her voice has more “off” days then “on” ones so she gets nervous that her voice will crack or get too unintentionally raspy. Wish she would train her voice more.
Mariah is just awesome! There's no modern musician in pop that hasn't been inspired by her in a way.
I'm glad that this year she's been good and looks way more focused. She replaced her whole team pretty much and I'm sure that's part of it.

Your review definitely on point, i always think she still has it and yes not as good as her prime but she still has the voice better than current famous singers to be honest, she is indeed just lacking her confidence on stage, probably she was still haunted by the past performance where people were bashing her with negative comments. But she should know, she is one of the greatest vocalist, of course people will still expecting the best from her no matter what, she cannot expecting people accept the way she sing bad. She should realizes this. If i were Mariah, i will cover someone else’s current famous hit song and do show what she can do now still. Hahahah. One thing I can tell you as someone with Bipolar disorder and who works in medicine is that the types of medications Mariah is on for her bipolar same as what I’m on and so many millions
Of people is that as a singer on these meds it affects your voice, it creates an influx of different chemicals and hormones that relax vocal chords too
Much and also cause dehydration and dry mouth no matter how much water you drink this still happens not to Mention that the illness itself affects your energy and mood which also takes its toll on your voice. Today I woke up and hit the highest note I’ve hit in about 3 years and the clarity and fluidity stayed with me throughout the entire day and those days of vocal health and flexibility are fantastic but it’s rare we get these days when on such powerful medications. Also with bipolar disorder comes insomnia which unfortunately is just one of the many problems we face and lack of sleep is the worst thing as a singer. This isn’t making excuses because we all know with age mariahs voice has changed and isn’t as fluid but it’s an explanation as to why sometimes her voice is very fluid and at other times it’s difficult to do the run she wants. Psychiatric medications affect everything including your voice and whilst we’re on the tangent here it also causes incredible weight gain and bloating. Funnily enough this year Mariah said She was on a new mix of meds for her bipolar and her voice has improved and she’s lost a lot of weight. Last year she was on a different regimen of meds. Just getting out of bed each day is the hardest thing in the world when you’re living with a severe mental illness so the fact that Mariah is still doing what she’s doing and still sounding like an angel and releasing new music and still touring is miraculous so
People need to stop their bitching and moaning and just appreciate the legend and superstar that she is. She saved me again and again and made me realise I wasn’t completely alone in this horrible world

reddragonready its not delusional...you can clearly hear her voice resonating the whole thing especially when she holds those mid belts it is pure resonance and you could hear it really loud with microphone that far means if she put it right in front of her mouth it would be too much power even tho it is a dinamic microphone, if she sand like that in front of condenser microphone in a studio and was too close it would make a big distortion which wouldnt be able to be solved in a recording
People my response was to the first part of his statement! But re the microphone...she could simply use a different microphone. Aside from that..I doubt indeed she still has that much "resonance". She lips all those parts. So ya know...I don't have to prove anything..she does so herself.

Thomas S I love Mariah, she is one of the greatest vocalists, but you are being a delusional stan. Volume control is not achieved by moving the microphone away, if you have to move your microphone away for a belt your lacking volume control. Each note can be hit with different dynamics and volume

I really love your take on Mariah's performance especially on her anxiety.
Because people expect her to sing like a 20 year old when she is 50 makes her afraid of the cracks that she has in her voice now. Just let the woman live in peace and appreciate that she is still around and get over it that hardly anybody sounds the same at 50.

Also the backlash and negativity she get's online from haters probably knocked her confidence but she seems to be a lot happier now. I'm glad she is healing and in a better place, she seemed really depressed during 2014-2016. Got a new album out and her confidence is coming back.
She's a very insecure person by nature and with the decline of her vocal ability, she became extremely insecure about her voice.
Also, the clothes she often chooses to wear and high heels don't help (not shading!) with having a proper posture while singing. Your body's supposed to be in a relaxed, comfortable posture. Maybe that also plays into it but it's mostly her insecurities.
She's had a more stiff stage presence for many years now.
But you should check out her performances during her european tour in 2016. For some reason, she was moving a lot more and clearly was feeling more confident since her voice during that tour was in pretty great shape (better than here).
Her voice is not what it used to be but clearly she can still sing pretty great. It just became very inconsistent.

I think you are correct with the corset idea. It's like her breathing and movements are restricted. There is also a rumored gastric surgery. I have no idea if this is during that period.
I enjoy your videos and how you are truthful she seems to really get nervous when she does feel confident it makes a real difference. The distance on jimmy fallon she seems to be pretty confident. I think she feels uncomfortable because she can’t match the same vocals she had in her prime although she is still amazing. That may be why

It’s gotta be so hard to have had such an outrageously phenomenal vocal peak that 30 years ahead you have to do the same songs live and everyone expects it to be the same. Mariah’s delivering vocal performances that still exceed most vocalists today but they’re viewed as “bad” simply because they’re compared to how she used to sing in her prime, which simply isn’t logical or fair. Her belts her are so resonant though, I was actually blown away.
Love your input! I am a die hard Lamb, and realistically, obviously Mariah’s voice has aged over 30 years of constant use but that said, she still sounds EXCELLENT, better now than she has in a few long years. I think her innate insecurities and self-esteem issues mixed with how much hate she gets, especially from American media, has really affected her confidence on stage. However even in the most unconfident moments, her musicality is still unmatched. She is queen of melody.

I think this is the perfect forum to make this point ( I respect this video and The Honest Vocal Coaches Critique) I'm a Fan of Mariahs I was there from the beginning of her career, 1st album, some of her first live performances. I will get straight to the point Mariah does not write, or arrange simple easy songs to perform. She is a self admitted Studio Singer. Singing Live was never her "thing" Thats not to say she can't or doesn't It's just not her preferred environment( when we are talking about being completely comfortable) The songs she sings are ALWAYS going to sound different live then when you hear the studio version where capturing and perfecting notes, and nuance are what make a recording magical. What she does vocally is extremely physical. Her "stiffness" I believe is with great intent. She is an athlete and with any athleticism it requires a balance of tension and relaxed effort. It is just the way her body presents itself while she's performing a live vocal. Singing is not always pretty but the proof in the end is how much control she has over her voice and that is evident time and again. AND lest we remind our selves that the instrument she's been using ( her voice)has been singing for almost 30 yrs non stop. Name one PRO Athlete thats still playing their sport at the performance level they played at in their PRIME .All that said I think its fair to say Mariah sounds quite well for almost 3 decades of non stop singing. We can pick apart and analyze every note riff run belt and placement of her voice til the cows come home.
She sounds RESTED, REHEARSED and WRITING AND SINGING SONGS IN better keys that still showcase her unmatched vocal agility and ability. Plain and simple . Lets all put down our Microscopes and just enjoy the music .

I think her body positioning when singing is also todo with the shoulder injury she sustained in 2013, she had nerve damage and her hand sometimes shakes. you can see it, but she's grasping the mic with that hand and arm so maybe she's trying to stay in control

Ever since she had the incident where she fell on set and dislocated her should and suffered severe nerve damage, making her wear the glove so many people were curious about, her movement has been stiff and impaired.

It's probably alot harder to sing for her now than it is when she was young. I remember she said she has like this routine to soothe her voice before bed when she has to perform the next day to get her voice is good shape or something like that.
