That's the feast or famine nature of the Guadelupe River! On a related note, sometime in the mid 2000s, don't recall the exact year, my wife and I were visiting with her brother and his wife who used to live in Spring Branch. We went to Gruene right after one of those heavy rain storms, back before they rebuilt the Gruene Road bridge that crosses from Gruene to New Braunfels. The water was flowing over the bridge from the heavy rain so of course, it was closed. We walked down the road to the edge of the water to get a closer look at the river. That was when we noticed the kayakers coming down the river. Even with the water moving as fast as it was, there were still calm pools of water off by the edge of the water where we were. They paddled to one of those pools because they had to get out of the water to navigate around the bridge that was about half submerged. We helped them carry their kayaks to the other side of the road so they could re-enter the water and that was when we heard the screams coming from upriver. We looked up just in time to see an empty kayak get tossed over the top of the bridge rail and then get washed downstream. And then we saw a young woman get slammed into the bridge railing by the rushing water. She grabbed on to the railing and was screaming for help. She was about 40 - 50 yards from where we were standing and some of us tried to run out onto the bridge to get her and bring her to safety, but the current was too strong. I almost had my feet swept out from under me and I heard my wife and sister-in-law yelling at me to get back. There was nothing we could do to help the young lady as she clung to that bridge rail for dear life. Her companions started yelling to her, telling to let go and go under the bridge. She obviously didn't want to do that, and I can't say I blame her, but there was nothing else that could be done. We knew she was tiring out fast. Keep in mind, she was taking a horrific beating from the water. There wasn't even enough time to call 9-1-1 and I don't think a helicopter could have reached her in time. Finally, with her companions urging her on, and probably because she had used up the last ounce of strength, she let go and went under the bridge. After what seemed like an eternity, she popped up about 50 - 75 yards downstream from the bridge. One of her companions got into his kayak and a group of us shoved him to deeper water and off he went. Fortunately, he was an experienced kayaker and knew what he was doing, because he caught up to her in no time and the current carried them to the New Braunfels side where we watched them get up and out of the water. We saw her stand up, so we knew she was okay, though I imagine she was shaken from her near death experience. Had there been brush, tree limbs, or other debris caught under the bridge, that would have ended up being a body recovery. Thankfully, that was not the case.
@@crazytexan6372 Just checked my notes and looking at the noaa sight. From 7/21 it has gone up 1'. 23" as of right now. I sure hope we get some more rain in the next few days.
Thank you for showing everyone about Canyon Lake!! If you ever have the opportunity to video where the river water and Canyon Lake connects I would be very eager to watch it. Love watching your videos
@@courtneypeterson6476 Thanks for the comment. That's on the other side of the lake from us. I believe one of the local San Antonio news channels was there. The only thing really to see was the tons of debris coming into the lake. Very, very little trash all trees, limbs nature material. It happens every time that river floods.
Hope you didn't flood. We are fixing to start using the ramp in your backyard. I have let my Heeler swim there several times and talked to people on the water. The only water our Jet outboard boat is seeing is the coast.
We just floated the river this past weekend in New Braunfels. The flow was 72-75 cfs.. Hope to see Canyon lake get some good water from the rain fall you guys have received.
Its 9pm on the 24th. I came over that River bridge at 7pm, Rebecca creek rd. The water was over the river banks flooding that lower side of river bank.
Hopefully, we will see more. We just went to an appointment in San Antonio and came back Fm 3009 to 46 to 311. I was telling my wife I haven't seen it this green going into August in forever.
Two cold fronts and two tropical storms. A good showing this summer. We'll see how August goes, but we still need to find better ways to slow this water down so it doesn't just flow right over all aquifer without filling it up too.
We finally got rain by Medina Lake. But the lake level only went up about 3 feet and is still extremely low at 3%. Where is all that water going? Something weird is going on. We know SAWS is suing BMA water. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Has the water been re-routed?
We can't get our hopes up. It LOOKS like our lake should start getting some water... But they've been pumping zillions of gallons out. We need 2 or 3 YEARS of good rain to get our lake back....
We have had an unusual ("blessed") July, with a stalled front providing us all this moisture. I was bummed when we missed out on the storm track for Beryl. We definitely gotta have widespread 4+" rains in the GRB to make any significant headway on the lake level.
I have seen a picture from Ingram, we have a wall of water headed down stream. Different people from the head waters area are saying they have received up to 13 inches..
@@heelerdadadventures saw pictures of flooding in center point and agree it’s coming. Any additional rain over the basin will really start more widespread flooding.
This flood peaked at Kerrville at 9.32 feet, moderate flood stage is 12 feet, major is 20 feet. Forecast for thus flood at FM 311 Bridge is 9.3 feet, far below the 25 foot minor flood stage. Above Ingram, bridges lack flood tolerance and roads are easily flooded. It has just been too long since the last flood so people have moved back to flood prone areas.
@mk-jm5tv Down, way down. I am saying that as a 28-year resident with the explosion of growth, the use of water from the lake, levels will hardly stay around 909. The only way it's going to fill back up is a flood like we saw in 1998 and 2002. It's a sad truth. We live up the river from the lake and haven't been able to use the county ramp in almost 2 years. There are 2 nice marinas, with boat slips. They are the only boats on the lake now. The last ramp closed a month or so ago. There is one marina ramp but is not supposed to be for public use. I'm not sure if it's locked down again.
@@heelerdadadventures We live off Rebecca creek. The son and I shot some video there yesterday. We didn't see anything crazy, but I used to go down the Guadalupe during floods below the dam 30-40+ years ago and it was pretty amazing. @mikemckenna8530 Should hit the bridge about 3:00 pm tomorrow if the predictions are right. I checked around 7:00, and it was down about a foot from the video. Good, canyon lake needs it so the monster of a cluster mess New Bransfuls has became over the last years can suck it dry again. Unforgivable what they allowed to happen to that once beautiful town.
Right. I remember going there years ago when New Braunfels had that "hill country"small town look and feel to it. I was there about a year ago and wondered what happened. It looked like every commercial shopping zone in any city. The hills had large houses and mansions on them. I thought is nothing sacred? Is everything for sale? The hill country is ruined.
Unfortunately all the neighborhoods that house all the Californians will water their grass to the point where the lake will fall again and we will be back in the same place by next year
Hoping all this rain is a new trend that will stick around for a while. The lakes and rivers sure do need it. Thanks for the update
I sure hope so.
