For those who are new to Sri Lankan system, let me explain what we have in SL. Sri Lanka is NOT a Westminster system like India or Britain. Sri Lanka has an executive presidential system like in France. Therefore you cannot apply the same logic that you apply in a Westminster system in SL. It is the president who is supreme and given executive power by the people in an islandwide referendum. In the constitution president can appoint an MP who according to the president enjoys the credibility and trust among the majority of parliamentarians. So the constitution has clearly given rights for the president to appoint him................RW faced a similar situation in 2003. There fore after coming into power in 2015, one of the first things he did was bringing 19A stripping the president his right to sack the prime minister. Therefore it has created TWO power centers which has created a deadlock.

Ranil Wickramasinghe became the leader of UNP in 1993 and retained his leadership by cunningly changing the party constitution. Ranil has lost not one or two but 29 elections. He has been rejected by the majority of the people most of the times. Many UNP members rebelled against his leadership. And those who rebelled against him had to leave the party and politics. How would you describe a politician who changes the constitution of the party just to stay as its leader? After beaten multiple times in electoral politics he returned to power in Sri Lanka thanks to Sirisena. And what was the first thing he did? He asked Sirisena to bring an amendment to the country’s constitution and transfer Sirisena’s powers to prime minister that means to him. That is he attempted to change the structure of the constitution by a mere amendment. And he prepared the 19A with his buddies which transferred the executive president’s powers to RW. People went to courts against it and the supreme court gave a sentence that certain sections of the amendment needed an islandwide referendum. This slimy character instead of going for a referendum removed parts of the amendment and managed to pass it at the parliament. He changed the party constitution to become its leader forever and changed the country’s constitution to retain the PM post.
