I was so excited to get the steelbook of this. Thought it was funny to see how different the times were back then. When the kids are calling him a chicken and he gets pissed about it had me laughing.

The connection to back to back to the future 2 was hilarious the first time I saw this movie. Out of the three Dean films this has to be my favorite. I love this time period in movies.

James Dean the finest actor of the last century East of eden was his best film in my opinion, wish he'd lived to do so much more !

James Dean is kind of the guy I would avoid when I was younger, but I can see why women was nuts about him.

Kenneth, the name of the movie is; Rebel….WITH OUT A CAUSE. So, if you felt like he was over wrought about his life, then it accomplished what it wanted.

Fun fact: Dennis Hopper is in the film, GIANT, which stars James Dean, as well. So out of the 4-5 films that James Dean was in, Dennis Hopper was in 2 of them with him.

OK, it looks good but since this is the 1st time you've seen the movie you can't compare it to other editions to say how much of an improvement there actually is. The reason that most people watch 4K reviews is to see if it's worth the double dip or the price increase over BRD.

Ken, To answer your question about the teens not connecting with their parents. At the time rock and roll was coming into fashion, and there was a general angst with teenagers throughout the country, which pretty much was the start of the generation gap . The film reflected this by James Dean's character feeling his father lacked a backbone and that he felt his father never stood up for him, and that there was a lack of communication within the family. So, I guess you couldn't relate to the film's portrayal of the teens, however the teens at the time could and as I mentioned before this was actually happening in the country at the time. 'The Breakfast Club' is the 80's attempt to deal with the teen's angst for that time. It still goes on even to this day, where teens don't connect with they elders or don't you see that?

All three leads died young. Sal Mineo was stabbed to death at the age of 37 while parking his car. Wood died mysteriously when she somehow managed to fall overboard and drowned. It was mysterious because Wood was terrified of the water and somehow fell (or was pushed) overboard following a fight with her husband on the boat. Dean died when driving at a high rate of speed when a young driver didn't see him coming and pulled out in front of him.
I love this film, from the opening scene to the sad ending. I pre-ordered the steelbook, as I've had a problem in the past with my local Best Buy ordering too few of the steelbooks and selling them out before I can get there to purchase. It's exceptional, IMO, and a great addition to my collection.

Deaths could be that the film was not for teenagers, and really for adults. It is an award winning disturbing film.

Sal Mineo is so underrated. I hope more of his movies get proper 4k/blu ray releases. Im pretty sure Sal Mineo’s character was sexually attracted to James Dean’s character but at that time they weren’t allowed to fully get deep into that. That’s what I heard idk how accurate that is.

Sal Mineo also died tragically. He was stabbed in the heart by a mugger.

I really enjoyed this review. It's interesting to hear the take of someone from your generation (I'm a boomer) on these classic, touchstone films. My interest in films got revitalized when I got more serious about collecting a little over a year ago. Now with about 60 years of movie watching under my belt I've found that revisiting these classics results in somewhat mixed feelings. Many of them do not have the level of polish that modern films have when it comes to production values, acting, action sequences, etc. So, a certain frame of mind is required to fairly assess them in the context of the era in which they were produced. Because of my age, nostalgia can also be a positive influence. On the other hand, most of the stone-cold masterpieces will not have any of these issues and are basically timeless. Anyway, my Letterboxd score coincided with yours.

Sal Mines died tragically too, he was murdered from a stab to his heart making it three tragic deaths from that film. I was named after James Dean (just the first name). My favorite film of his is 'East of Eden' followed by 'Rebel Without a Cause' and last would be 'Giant'. Also, the line 'Your tearing me apart.Lisa' from the low budget indie film 'The Room' was taken from this movie, with the name Lisa added to the line.

Interesting review. I watched this film once a long time ago and I remember I had a similar reaction. I wasn't sure it aged all that well.
Regarding Natalie Wood, you might want to check out her performance in West Side Story before you watch your Criterion edition of Romeo and Juliet.
I watched Romeo and Juliet on Saturday. It's a tremendous film that definitely lives up to the hype - but it does stick to Shakespeare's Elizabethan text. If you're not familiar with the play, I think it will be much easier to follow if you've seen West Side Story first.
(If you are familiar with the play, my recommendation may be unnecessary. But West Side Story is still a worthwhile watch in its own right. 👌)

I really like James Dean, got the Giant 4K with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor. Yes, it's a teen movie, and Natalie, she did great also. This is her second on 4K that I know of.

Also, Natalie was in “Spender in the Grass” with Warren Beatty. That’s a teen classic as well. Natalie also has a sister, Lana Wood, who is an actress. She was in “Diamonds are Forever” with Sean Connery. She is AWESOME!

"Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) film is weird. It has strange anomalies like Natalie Wood's (Judy's) hands are of different sizes, they look overly large when she reads her returned address book in her room, the thumbs very big and undone nails, and her body is not seen with the hands. Other have her hands normal looking when he rest of her body is shown. They do the same with Plato, his hands look much larger when he crosses his fingers during the car race. I have the CD version probably not in 4K, but has good color. Other stuff like Judy sometimes having mechanical robotic slight movements, her disappearance after the planetarium exit when she exits with Buzz, as she is not in the Buzz group at the end of the stairs, in the scene before that James Dean (Jim) discusses the planetarium console with circuitry with a planetarium staff member. They also sometimes make Judy look mixed race. It is a great film about psychopathology of the culture--they get over deaths in five minutes, and rich guy Plato, having absent family, seeing it all. No explanations for the culture.

Ken, with regard to Natalie Wood, go see the original Miracle on 34th Street. She is the child actress in it. She is also in one of the greatest road race movies of all time,
The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk and so many others.
