My dad did this one time. I was really young and he was watching his favorite show late at night. My mom was not home. He wanted a late night snack so he went in the fridge and found a hard-boiled egg. He thought "ok why don't I just heat up this egg quickly in the microwave during the commercial break". Needless to say he was busy for a lot longer than the commercial break. Spent the next hour cleaning up after the egg explosion. It went in his eyes, hair, on the ceiling, everywhere.
10 years later when we were repainting the kitchen we found pieces of egg still stuck on the ceiling. We still laugh about it to this day.

I blew an egg on my face today.
I had boiled two eggs, and after opening and eating the first it was undercooked. So I thought why not microwave the other one for 30 seconds instead of heating a whole pan of water again? So I put it in a mug with water over it, took it off, cracked the shell a bit, and realized it still wasn’t ready. So I put it back in the mug, but this time without water covering it since I had already pealed some of the shell. All looked fine, I took it off, held on my hand and it was hot, but I decided to poke the open part with a knife just to check if the yolk was finally cooked. That was when it finally happened...
POP!
It blew in my hand and bits of egg flew on my face, hair, shirt, and everywhere around the kitchen. I found bits of egg 3 meters away and even on the ceiling.
I didn’t get hurt though. The worst part is that what remained in the shell on my hand didn’t even taste good. I gave the biggest chunks to my dog, he loved it, then I cleaned the rest of the mess.
So now I’m here trying to understand what the hell happened. This video says that the pressure builds up to a point that the shell can’t hold it anymore, but that clearly wasn’t the case with me since I had already opened both the shell and the membrane before blowing it up. It was only when I poked a knife into it that it blew. I immediately remembered what happens when you microwave a glass of water and stir it after it is above boiling temperature, and suddenly all the water boils. That must have been it. And since moving the egg from the microwave didn’t trigger the reaction, I suppose it was because the semi solid state of the egg didn’t allow the water within it to move. So it was only when I poked it with a knife that I triggered a chain reaction...
If anyone wants to try my recipe: egg in a small pan with water covering it, high flames for 8 minutes. Throw hot water away and put cold water over it to cool. Then egg in a mug with water covering, 30sec microwave, then another 30 sec without water. Have fun.

Omg this happened to me 2 days go because it was undercooked. Threw it in the microwave not knowing it explodes. After 38 seconds. Microwave breaks. Microwave door flies open and kitchen power died for 10 minutes
@@threadbreaker5851 hahahah LOL you had a BAD time! I got it to blow in my face and fly everywhere, but since I didn’t get hurt, I think breaking the microwave is much worse.

I did this when I was 7 or 8, I was not expecting it to blow up. I looked inside and walked off. I have 3 other siblings so my odds were not bad haha.

Hey there! That theory should work out with raw eggs, but why do hard boiled eggs (without a shell) explode when cut?
I thought about that for a little bit and it could be connected to nucleation points for boiling. Im unsure how it is testable tho, maybe by poking sand into the egg.

I had a peeled hard boiled egg explode exactly the same as in this video. I don't actually think the shell has anything to do with it.
An boiled egg will explode even without the shell. Happened to me just now. So it has nothing to do with the shell that can't expand.
Try it yourself. First boil the egg. Then let it cool down in the refrigerator. Then put it in the microwave without the shell.

I did this too. It was just a big explosion and i had to take my microwave apart to clean it.

so I go to my fridge, pull out some eggs and put them into the microwave after I cracked them in a bowl. tell me why, I heard 2 pops so I was like oh, 2 eggs, 2 pops. Surely, it must be done popping and the eggs are ready. as soon as I pulled them out of the microwave, and set them on the counter, the eggs blew up in my face and made a fat mess in my kitchen and my shirt. i can't cook for the life of me
I keep getting ptsd from watching these, i did this once when i was 11. My friends decided to prank me, they were cracking up so hard while i was mortifief luckily my parents werent home so i cleaned the microwave, my mom still knew tho (there were still lil bits of eggs) you know what my dumbass did to clean the microwave up? I took a fucking vacuum cleaner, jesus i was so dumb oml

Yeah, that elementary. Why does an egg explode when you open the egg shell and place the yoke and white in water to make a poached egg?
These are one of the few things i use as op weapons, also including water bottle grenades

Nice eggsplosion! Eggs are unpredictable, you don't know what you're going to get. If the white explodes first, you get a weak explosion where the egg just splits in half, if the yolk explodes first, you get a strong explosion, and if you get lucky (or rather unlucky) both the yolk and the white explode at the same time, you get a BOOMing explosion that bumps the door open.

I just tried this in my microwave not the shell though. I cracked an egg and put it in a cup of hot tap water and covered with a bit of kitchen roll which hits the sides of the microwave then just under 1:30 seconds probably about 8 seconds left to go the egg popped out of the cup and a little mess in microwave with the poached egg on the turn table, egg turned out hard inside has this ruined my microwave? I then tried a cup of coke water after that on 1:00 minute and the water was got enough to drink as i took a sip. Is my microwave ok? It is brand new. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I was trying to make Boiled egg in the microwave and I Bursted open sound it like it was blowing I have done it before but never do it for longer then 2 minutes at a time I have learned my lesson

This just happened to me, I had three eggs boiling in water in the microwave and it exploded and broke my damn microwave. Didn’t know it did this. Lesson learned and plus my microwave is a over the range microwave so it’s gonna be expensive 😡😡😡

Remember back when I was like 8 my mum put an egg in a mug in the microwave hoping to cook it...
It eggsploded (😉), covering her and half the kitchen with bits of half-cooked white. Luckily, I was about 2 inches out of range.

My wife did this many years ago not knowing that it would explode. Our micro wave looked like someone put a hand grenade inside and closed the door. The door blew open, shattered the glass window of the door and shattered the inside of the micro oven. Had to throw it away.

i feel bad for your microwave
i'll tell u what happened, im covered in egg particles and so is my table my walls and my kids, im so lucky they didn't burn. I only warmed it for 30secs in microwave and that was enough to build up enough pressure to make them explode

Problem is --- what's the difference between this and a hard-boiled egg? the water content in the egg in a hard-boiled egg should still boils right? why don't hard-boiled eggs explode?

I did this except i had it in cup of water trying to see if it can be an hard boiled egg regret when it exploded late at night around 1AM water everywhere and microwave smelling like eggs. NEVER AGAIN!

This is not correct. I have boiled an egg before and removed the eggshells. Then i reheat it in microwave, hoping it would not explode because i peeled off the eggshells. But to my surprise, it still exploded.

Great question! I have not tried a hard boiled egg, I should try that and an uncooked egg side by side
@@TheScienceClassroom i did some testing irl and found that if the hardboiled egg has a shell it lasts about 10 seconds and if not about 3, either way it both gives you an egg infested microwave 🙃
