How to Clean the Catit Flower Fountain

- Here is the Catit Flower Fountain, a charming green and white 3L compact bubbler-style water pet fountain. This is a very popular water fountain, and can be adjusted so it's just a bubbler (green top only), just the white flower, or white flower with a yellow center to control the water flow. It has a large capacity - but no, that does not give you permission to let it go a week in between washings! Wash your water fountains, including the motor!
As with other bubbler-style water fountains, it is best to have another water source, like a bowl of water, just in case the power goes out, as then the cat would not be able to access the water in the water fountain.

Thanks for your video saved my $14 that I would have had to pay to replace my motor. I never knew that the motor could come apart. I was able to fix motor and get the fountain working again thanks to your video.
You’re the best. I couldn’t figure why it wasn’t functioning properly and how often it needed to be cleaned. Took a couple of viewings to see how the motor came apart.
I just got the current version which has the window in front. Easy to set up and clean, quiet(I’m using it without the flower for right now), and my cat took to it immediately. She’s definitely drinking more!

Omg, I didn't know the motor could be taken apart. I would be scraping between the grill with a toothpick and shaking the motor in a container of water for the biofilm to come out. It would take forever! I just cleaned it again last night again and then I saw your video today. Took the motor apart and there was still plenty of biofilm inside. Thank you for the video!
Your video was so useful! It fixed the problem my water fountain was having. Thank you for posting this video! Cheers from London, ON.
Thank you for this, it was helpful!
I have VERY hard water and I had to wash mine three times! Ah! First with soap and water to get a good clean, then with vinegar and water to try to get the scale off, then to rinse the vinegar off. It was a lot. If I didn't have hard water then it would be a breeze to clean, the hard water I have just built up very quick! Thanks for the helpful video! Made it so much easier to figure out how to get it clean and sanitized! Thanks!
3:20 ok I’m not losing it 😮💨😌 I was like no get back here so I can see it with the knife lol! Ty very much for showing me 🤗
I think it's okay to change the water twice weekly. As opposed to all the other types which the filter doesn't really filter. For cats, they are much pickier and like fresh water. It's very easy to empty and rinse. I usually wipe it and the flower components clean weekly. You can open the pump easily with a tweezer or small screwdriver. She's wrong in cleaning the parts in that a straw brush does a great job cleaning the openings. I spray everything except the filter with white vinegar. This both cleans and removes the biofilm and disinfects safely. You can also put some water in the bottom of the bowl then add a cup of white vinegar. Reassemble, run for a couple of minutes, then empty and rinse. I think my method is a little more clean than how she does it trying to get a toothbrush down the middle. And I'm a retired infection control nurse.
Thanks so much! So happy to have found this video.
I would say cleaning it in a weekly period is absolutely adequate but this is a personal opinion. Furthermore filling up the fountain to the very top of the pump is enough too.
The new fountain has a min/max indicator which is pretty nice.
Very very good info...My cat loves it and so do I....but I find drinking from it is hard on my knees
Holy 💩! I used my utility scissors or whatever it’s called in my knife set…..I held onto the fan BUT not too much pressure and 💥 the magnetic fan came out 🎉 💪🏼💃🏼
I clean and maintenance my fountain every other week and monthly for the filters, 30th of every month except of course for February.
You can use metal nail clipper file , to open the motor ..safer than knife...
Great tip!
You just saved me from buying a new pump!!! I had no idea it came apart. When I cleaned it, there was all this hair in there!! Now it runs like new!
Thank u this was a very helpful video. I didn't even read the instructions I just used this video so thanks again. I'm just wondering when will my cats will respond to it.
Glad it was helpful! Cats seem to take to water fountains quite well. Hope they like it!
Hi! I know it's been four years so no worries if you don't see this but here are my follow up questions:
1. can the white part that's connected to the cord be washed with warm water, or would that damage the cord?
2. for the ones that do have the yellow part, does it separate completely from the flower petal part during disassembly?
3. should i just wash the motor itself or the entirety of the cord because it touches the inside of the fountain?
4. can the plastic back part of the filter also be washed in cold water?
thanks so much!
My cats prefer the top piece of the flower to remain off. They like to drink from the bubbling well better then the streams falling into the bowl. I guess they get bored drinking from the thin stream
big help, thank you!
My Catit fountain has a window in front so I can see if the fountain needs water. I ad water almost daily. I;ve had mine now for over two years and with no complaints. One of my cats took to it instantly, the other two weeks and my newbie, the same, it took her two weeks to get used to it.
Very informative! Thank you.
Thank you very much. ❤
I think the pump with electric cord doesn't work. It's no bubble water came out. What should we do?
Great video - very informative!
Thank you so much for this video! Would you mind answering these questions?
How often should you clean whole thing including small parts and
how often should you change water? Thanks again!
Glad you found it helpful!
I've mentioned in some of my more recent videos that the more often you wash it, the easier and faster it will be to wash, as you won't have the tough build-up you get if you don't wash it regularly. I usually wash water fountains every other day, but sometimes every day if the cat paws at the water and gets debris inside. Every three days might also work for some cats, but you will start to visibly notice a bit of slimey biofilm by then in the motor. So it depends how clean you want your cat's water to be and what kind of cleaning experience you want to have.
Whenever I am maintanencing my Catit foutain, when it comes to the impeller, I have a small knife, what I do it pry it up and grab it with my fingers and get it out.
Thank you for the video. Just got the newer stainless steel version. Aside from when the unit is cleaned, can it run 24 hours a day? Is it bad to continuously run it?
Thank you! Do you know why some filters float up and others fit snuggly? I'm not sure if it makes a difference. I hope not!
On the website they say the filter may need submerging seperately for a bit or you can turn the filter upside down for a day or two to fully soak
Thank you for this helpful video. Just one thing - I believe there are 3 different water settings. How do you adjust the flow? Thanks.
Hi! I believe the three flow settings are:
1. White and yellow flower parts on
2. Yellow part off, white flower on
3. White and yellow part off so it's just the green bubbler
Hope that helps!
@@catsandhamsters Great, thanks for your help!
How often do you need to change the filter idk why but im seeing you can leave it for 6montha
I have an older small catit fountain and am having a hard time lining up the pump with the top. Any suggustions?
Do you need to unplug it from the wall or keep it powered ontell you clean it?
Well there's a thing - I never knew the motor came apart. All this time I've been using compressed air...haha
It's in the instructions
Is there a reason my fountain would have a weaker flow after cleaning? This was my first time cleaning since I only recently got it but after it’s not generating nearly as much water as before. It’s basically a slow trickle now but nothing looks/is dirty anymore.
Hmmm. All I can think of is is the motor lined up so that the water goes straight up through the top? If it's not aligned properly, you'll get a trickle. Does the motor work ok by itself?
Another reason why your pump might not seem powerful enough is that the slider on the Flower Fountain pump might be slid to the wrong side. Slide the slider to the + side for a maximum capacity. Please note that only older models of the Flower Fountain have this slider. - catit.com
How come after cleaning & refilling the water is not flowing out of the flower petals? I’ve tried a few times, did everything over again & again & it’s not working! Help please!
Are they lined up properly?.The water has to be able to shoot straight up.
Does the water flow up out of the motor properly? Are all the pieces in? I forget with this model, but some motors have an option to adjust the strength of the flow on the little "screen" cover that goes over the impeller.
Does your water becomes hot overtime?
I need help with mine, I've cleaned it the pump is working but the when the water comes out it's going to one side and not all around as before, please help I'm not sure what else to do. It's new maybe 2-3 months
I haven't encountered this before. Make sure the pump is lined up the right way, so the water can flow up all the way.
You might want to contact the manufacturer. I'm sure they've heard it all, and they should be able to walk you through troubleshooting. Report back afterwards!
@@catsandhamsters is lined up and the pump is working but the water is only flowing to one side i e mailed them today but nothing yet. I'll let you know if I hear from them
How often do you change the filter?
I'd say about every 2 weeks, as it gets discolored and yucky, but it depends how dirty it gets. I believe the manufacturer recommends every 3-4 weeks.
I useawateradditive for dental health in drinking water can I use it in the cat it?
I'd imagine so, you might just have to clean it more to make sure there's no debris build up.
How do you remove the hard water deposits you mentioned? I am experiencing this as well
You might want to check with the manufacturer for suggestions on that. I do see it sometimes, and I just do what I can with dish soap and a scrubber, but as you say, there are sometimes deposits which don't scrub off.
I'd probably say just frequent washing, to prevent the build-up. Sorry I can't offer anything more helpful!
My led bulb is dimming. How do I remedy?
This model doesn't have an LED bulb.
For your fountain, I'd recommend checking your owners manual and with the manufacturer.
Lol how did your cam fall
The phone is at a weird angle, and sometimes the selfie stick tripod gets unbalanced and topples over. :D
Didn’t even see you clean it, just take it apart??
Seems pretty self explanatory how to wash something.. was mostly showing all the pieces to disassemble TO wash it. Dish soap and warm water.. a separate sponge than what you use for your own dishes to avoid contamination, etc. google is free :)
errrr. urm... eermmmmmmm..uuuuuuuuh....
otherwise a nice vid.
These fountains are STUPID and gross
How to clean? Throw in the trash. Despite regular cleaning this grew mold and killed our cats and made our dog sick. Do not use plastic fountains. Our vet even said that they are pet poison machines.
