Jimmy Carter reminds me of my grandfather who was a deeply religious person, but used his religion to justify things like helping his community and the poor and not being some asshole bigot type.
His biggest things he did wrong imo. Was he still very pro Shah of Iran and did engage in some deregulation that kinda fucked us over long term specifically airlines deregulation. Also Hasan says all US presidents promoted neo liberalism and therefore there all terrible. Like Hasan literally hates all US presidents
Not just East Timor. He helped legitimize (or rather gave his seal of approval to) Marcos Sr., a Philippine dictator, that killed, disappeared, and jailed the opposition. Didn’t matter that they weren’t communists to Marcos Sr. Former Philippine President Macapagal even wrote an article in an American paper condemning Carter for his unequivocal support for Marcos. The Marcos monster’s victims (deaths and disappearances) are between 2000-4000 people, including journalists, students, teachers, priests, nuns, volunteer workers, etc. East Timor, now Timor Leste, used to get the treatment that people east of Indonesia get from Indonesian military with help from the Australian military. All for resources too.
