I've heard that floorball is really healthy because it's so fast and gets your heart rate up. I've also heard it's a favorite among police and rescue services in Sweden and that many police and EMS stations have a rink in the basement. Edit: I looked it up. Swedish police and firefighters have their own floorball leagues, that's how much they love it.
From what I can tell the manufacturer recycles the radios. They do have restrictions on what kind of cameras you can bring in. The ball people do get paid more than the federal minimum wage and get free meals and snacks as well as their uniforms. For a lower budget it's better to go early and during fan week you can even get in free and watch the top athletes practice and usually get courtside seats for it. They also have events that require tickets during fan week, but they are generally much cheaper. Buying tickets early might not save you that much but if you can wait till the last minute often the ticket prices drop significantly. During the tournament itself you can get a daily ground pass at a much lower price which gets you into the Grandstands and Armstrong Stadium but not Arthur Ashe Stadium or any assigned seating. If you like long rallies then women's tennis tends to have more of them as it's less about the overpowering serves of the men's game.
i’m a ball kid for a wta/atp 1000 tournament and we don’t get paid bc we’re volunteers. we do get meal tickets ($13 per session so $26 if you’re volunteering the entire day which is barely anything bc food is so expensive but we do get free snacks at our volunteer tent) as well as free ball kid uniforms, hats/visors, sweat bands, shoes, etc. you’re generally allowed to come into the tournament for free but you have to sit in the nosebleeds seats (understandably).
I went this year! It was an absolute blast but yes to all your points about costs, hoity-toity ness, etc. If you go again, recommendations for better tennis watching: go for 3rd/4th round tickets. You see a lot more games per ticket, it's on the Labour Day weekend, much much cheaper, and often better games because it isn't at the end of 2 weeks of intense tennis and everyone isn't as exhausted. By 3rd/4th round, usually the lopsided matches are done so you rarely see a blow-out, and you see enough tennis that you usually see at least a couple great matches. Also, on Labour Day, grounds ticket get entry into first-come, first-serve day session tickets at Louis Armstrong. It is a much smaller venue than Arthur Ashe so general seating is not that nosebleed in comparison and you can get about 5-6 hours of tennis there. My husband and I each had one honey deuce and honestly, would make again. However, would not BUY again. The number of rich people on like 6 honey deuces made me physically ill at the money spent. It isn't THAT good a drink!
As someone whos spent their life with family in elite sports, my hot take is once you get to that level, no sport is really 'healthy' considering the mental toll of it all
OH NO IVE ONLY SEEN THE THUMBNAIL BUT DONT MAKE THAT FACE the US open is one of my lifelong dreams I was planning a New York trip (from Ireland) almost specifically for it this year but I couldn't make it work, don't tell me it's bad, don't crush my dreamzzzzzz
Ngl I do get jealous seeing influencers get awesome seats for free when they have no clue about the sport and just there to take pics, so it's nice to see you paid for them. I only went to Fan Week, but even being in the sun there for like 2 hours had me dying, idk how the players do it. And fandom names are quite rare in tennis (I can only think of Rafans & Nolefam), don't think I've ever heard of a "Fritzie." Too bad you didn't get to see a great Men's Final though, Sinner vs Fritz is a snoozefest matchup 💀

Wrestlemania is close in Vegas next April, but date wise Survivor series is happening Nov 30
Loved that you went! I've been getting back into tennis over the past year and was on the fence about trying to go to the open in 2025 after getting some details from a friend who went to fan week this year. It can be a bit much trying to keep up with the tournament from home and some matches are so long I have to split them up over days to finish watching. I'd imagine the energy from being in the actual venue is a lot more exciting vs watching it off your computer.
Tennis: it will fuck up every joint in your body (and your back) if you want to play competitively as an adult. But if you're a regular person, you will probably just get some exercise and maybe wear out your knees a bit faster than normal.
I’m not a super tennis nut, but I do watch the grand slams every year. US Open and Wimbledon are both bucket list items, but they’re so expensive, as you pointed out. My cousin and her boyfriend went to the US Open last year because his company gave him free tickets and I was so annoyed with her when she said they went but didn’t watch a single match, just drank and hung out with friends on the grounds.
11:32 there are very few Taylor Fritz fans. And the commentary is annoying. I think that when you're at the US open the real privilege is that you can turn the commentary off.
I used to got to the AUS Open with my family every year until it got to hard with High school and also got too expensive. These events are always pretty good. Especially if you keep up with the player drama. I enjoyed sitting and watching matches. My first ever wave was in Rod Laver lmao. I miss it, but the cost is a bit high for me and my family at the moment. There's always the year after next I suppose.
16:31 on the ball kids note: my sister was a ball kid for tennis australia, you dont get paid but everyone that is one is an up n coming ranked junior tennis player. They're mainly there for exposure, to meet their idols, and to get use to the experience of having such a large crowd watching them for an extended period of time.
It’s not bc we like to get ripped off. It’s bc they’re two completely different tournaments, owned and operated by two completely different entities, with two completely different ways they go about running their tournaments. Wimbledon is all about prestige. They don’t like to take a lot of corporate sponsorships and keep the branding from said sponsors to a minimum. They also keep the tickets affordable. They also make the tickets extremely hard to get. So the only way you can actually get them if you weren’t selected in their lottery is through standing outside for hours on end just for a basic grounds pass. They club leaves a lot of money on the table by not charging expensive prices for sponsors and tickets. The US Open is super corporate and is a money making machine. Branding everywhere, sponsors everywhere, expensive prices bc lots of the good tickets go to people with Amex early access or companies and suites. Greater accessibility to the everyday person to even get a ticket tho. I can go on, but TLDR, you have no idea what you’re talking about.
I worked with a doctor who died playing tennis. He leaned back to hit a high ball and fell backwards causing a traumatic brain injury. So yeah, without a helmet I guess I don’t see it as safe which is part of healthy. 🤷🏼♀️ I know that’s anicdotal, but I’m legit kind of scared of it now!
Honestly, I was a little annoyed that you went to the US Open while knowing very little about tennis until you mentioned the prices you paid for tickets. After that, I have nothing but respect. One day you'll be able to tell people you watched Jannik Sinner win the first of his many US Open titles, so that's pretty cool.
The letting you sit wherever helps the stadium look more “full” for non headliner games. They want people from the upper section to move down in order to get a fuller stadium experience. Part of it I think is for the visuals in the broadcast, and part of it I hope is so that the players can see more people in the crowd supporting.
I loooove tennis and also love F1. I think part of it is also the personalities and different characters competing as opposed to a team. I recently picked up tennis a few months back and it’s been so much fun.
Swell! I was working with the TV crew for the tournament and had all access.. if you come back next year let me know and I can help get you some caviar chicken nugs!
You should consider coming to Phoenix for the Waste Management Open (Golf). They call it “The People’s Open”. It goes against the idea of being quiet and respectful while the pros are playing. It’s quite a sight to see.
I work in an operating room, with surgeons who make more money than I can ever dream of. Some of them were saying that the tickets were way too expensive this year, and for them to say it, really means something to me lol
As a huge tennis fan, I really loved this video and thought it was interesting to get the perspective of somebody who isn't a massive fan of the sport. If you did enjoy attending though, there's a big tournament in Indian Wells every March that is definitely worth going to!
Amanda, I don't know how you do it, but you talk about things that would otherwise bore me to death/have no interest in, but I LOVE hearing your opinions and experiences 😅
as someone who has like no idea about these things i think its pretty sick that you showcase what these experiences are like. overall i think u should keep going to these sporting-adjacent events if you dont have all the context just because its fun to listen to you yap about it after AND it actually makes me consider attending them at some point
My mom's a big tennis fan, and I remember her mentioning that it's harder to spread COVID on a tennis court. Of course, that doesn't apply to the spectators.
So I've been lucky enough to live close enough and have been 4 times now. I def think going on some of the earlier days is a smart option because its usually cheaper and there is just so much tennis to watch and makes the high ticket prices seem a little more worth it lol
Very biased Brit here, Wimbledon is the tennis pinnacle in my opinion, yes a lot of the traditions are a bit much but it definitely is the highlight of the tennis calendar
As an American, I completely agree. Wimbledon just has that prestige factor. Before I finally went in 2022, I had had literal dreams of going, only to wake up disappointed that I wasn’t there.

I was also a ballgirl for one of the wheelchair tennis tournaments. There was a period of intense training and then we helped run the entire tournament.
I hope the ball kids get paid because sometimes they do get treated like crap.
i’m a ball kid for a wta/atp 1000 tournament and we don’t get paid bc we’re volunteers. we do get meal tickets ($13 per session so $26 if you’re volunteering the entire day which is barely anything bc food is so expensive but we do get free snacks at our volunteer tent) as well as free ball kid uniforms, hats/visors, sweat bands, shoes, etc. you’re generally allowed to come into the tournament for free but you have to sit in the nosebleeds seats (understandably).
TIL going to the us opens is more expensive than going to the olympics
It isn't THAT good a drink!
honestly as soon as I say "US OPEN" in your video title I thought I was going to see the notorious chicken nuggets. I'm dissapointed as well.
"it'll come to me in the moment who im rooting for" is exactly how i feel abt any kind of motorsports tbh
I can’t afford U.S. Open tickets. Thankfully there is a tournament here in D.C. (Citi Open) that I often attend.
As someone whos spent their life with family in elite sports, my hot take is once you get to that level, no sport is really 'healthy' considering the mental toll of it all
Yes, always buy tickets for slams (that’s the tennis term for this type of event) early or whenever the tickets drop.
Nice hat 👍
I understand wanting to fill the space for vertical videos, but the blurred part was kind of “flashing” and whites and contrasting colors and it was hard on the eyes.
Love your videos!
I swear I saw you at the us open but I wasn’t sure so I didn’t come up to you. I’m glad I wasn’t wrong.
I am once again BEGGING you to go to a WNBA game. The basketball is fun and even when it isn't odds are there's some kind of gay drama that is or has gone down between at least two players.
Girl you look great with this hat 😍
The US open uses Hawkeye, which is a computerized system to call balls. It’s more accurate than line judges.
i watched a lot of the tennis at the Olympics and it was so funny, the crowd would be chanting and the umpire would go "merci :) merci beaucoup :)" and everyone would shut up it was great
my opinion about the US Open*
Title fixed, you're welcome
Literally, tf is even this video
@@lzasnw right?
chicken hoity toity nuggets with hoity toity sauce
Ball people do get paid and they also get food stipens
You should watch the mini documentary “Ball People.” I was blown away at how competitive it is to get that spot at the US open and how intense the whole process is!!
There's something that is so incredibly familiar aboutvAmanda. And I've seen her drop bits and pieces about where she's from, so i don't know if I know her from somewhere or I've seen her before or something, but she just seems so dang familiar lol. I don't know if she maybe has older siblings or what, but there's just something that I can't put my finger on. That makes me feel like I may have met her at some point in time lol. But what the f*** do I know I might be crazy. Or maybe I just know somebody that looks like her lol
You should review a marching band competition!!!
If you find the time can you give a wrestling event review. Maybe a Dark Match (non-televised), a regular Monday/Friday match and compare it to the bigger PLEs. Their is a ple tier structure, the big 4 are The Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam, and Survivor series. Wrestlemania is close in Vegas next April, but date wise Survivor series is happening Nov 30
Swimming is probably the healthiest sport in moderation
Thanks for this content. Since f1 has a freaking 4 week break, i need sports content
11:32 there are very few Taylor Fritz fans. And the commentary is annoying. I think that when you're at the US open the real privilege is that you can turn the commentary off.
Not sure how it is for the US open but I do know that the Australian Open gives ball kids tennis equipment as a "gift" for helping out at the games
Why do Americans love to get ripped off when it comes to tickets. Wimbledon in the uk is like £60 and you just queue up
I think originally we were paying for the convenience and privilege of not having to queue. But now that it's a standard here it is out of control.
Feeding my event habit as a job 🎉 continues 😂.
Interesting to hear about the cameras.
We’re in opposite boats: I have the mint green hat but wanted a blue hat, you have a blue hat but wanted a mint green hat lmao
Why the mic sounds tho?
I loooove tennis and also love F1. I think part of it is also the personalities and different characters competing as opposed to a team.
I recently picked up tennis a few months back and it’s been so much fun.
Pretty much all of your videos are about some event I know nothing about and I click on them like "ok, tell me girl" every time
Swell! I was working with the TV crew for the tournament and had all access.. if you come back next year let me know and I can help get you some caviar chicken nugs!
"Play tennis. It's the wealthiest sport."
I am a simple girl. I see new Swell video, I get excited and ready to learn!
As a huge tennis fan, I really loved this video and thought it was interesting to get the perspective of somebody who isn't a massive fan of the sport. If you did enjoy attending though, there's a big tournament in Indian Wells every March that is definitely worth going to!
The ball crew does get paid! They are the only grand slam ball crew that does, thanks to NY labor laws.
Hell yeah workers rights
I was literally just thinking ‘wow swell hasn’t uploaded in a little bit, she all good?’ And then i get this notification. Thanks for the video! ❤
why did this unlock the memory of the really short period of time in my childhood when my dad played tennis competitively
Amanda talking about tennis? The only sport I love? Fuck yeah.
Amanda, I don't know how you do it, but you talk about things that would otherwise bore me to death/have no interest in, but I LOVE hearing your opinions and experiences 😅
as a tennis and f1 fan this feels like the collision of my worlds
The US Open website says the ball kids get paid! Plus they get to keep their Polo gear and free food.
John McEnroe was on site announcing for the radio in Arthur Ashe stadium during the second week of
I prefer badminton and volleyball to tennis. Though interesting breakdown of the US Open.
Looking forward to the Livestream!
as someone who has like no idea about these things i think its pretty sick that you showcase what these experiences are like.
overall i think u should keep going to these sporting-adjacent events if you dont have all the context just because its fun to listen to you yap about it after AND it actually makes me consider attending them at some point
My mom's a big tennis fan, and I remember her mentioning that it's harder to spread COVID on a tennis court. Of course, that doesn't apply to the spectators.
Should’ve gone in the earlier rounds lowkey it’s more or a festival vibe
amanda, your outfit is everything !!
So I've been lucky enough to live close enough and have been 4 times now. I def think going on some of the earlier days is a smart option because its usually cheaper and there is just so much tennis to watch and makes the high ticket prices seem a little more worth it lol
Can you check out the NYCC after party scene? Are any of them worth it?
Am i really here two minutes in? Wild
Hi amanda! Excited for your take on this
Very biased Brit here, Wimbledon is the tennis pinnacle in my opinion, yes a lot of the traditions are a bit much but it definitely is the highlight of the tennis calendar
As an American, I completely agree. Wimbledon just has that prestige factor. Before I finally went in 2022, I had had literal dreams of going, only to wake up disappointed that I wasn’t there.
the US Open: you're welcome for Challengers ❤
Ball kids are paid.
😋 Will there also be a Twitchcon video this week?
Hi Amanda ! That’s my intro!
