Making your own pickups for a mod project is an absolute flex! Love how they sound, and balancing it in favour of to the coil close to the bridge is genius for low-tuned guitars
@@RaynPNo way! Thank you for the love 🥰 I’d recommend checking out Winspear strings here in the UK, they work perfectly on all my 30” baritones and they’re no more expensive than D’addario/EB
this video is like the guitar equivalent of mechanical keyboard videos. i dig this vibe. love the guitar btw, i always find offsets really nice and comfy to play on (i have a mustang)
Glad you like the pickups! I’m currently taking custom orders via my modshop account @ryansguitarmodshop! I’m slowly working on in-stock models and getting all the e-commerce and website stuff sorted out!
This song rips so hard at the end. And just so you know, I was on the fence for years on this guitar, but literally sent it through to buy it because of you. Love your videos and you are living my dream.
I've seen so many BAD videos on this guitar latley. So that being said thank you for a legit review with usefull info. In other words all keller NO filler! Youda'man.🙌
this guitar is so good thatConnor Sweney, ex guitarist for Loathe, used it stock, not even modded lol (you can see this exact guitar on playthroughs for Gored and Broken Vision Rhythm)
@Re4mation4ever he's currently working on new music, he teases new music in his instagram a lot. also he mixed and mastered a lot of stuff, latest Stoort Neer EP for example (solo project of Calle Thommer from Vildhjarta)
I have had this exact guitar for a couple months now. Its amazing for the price and even when ignoring the price. The frets may need a tiny bit of leveling but that sometimes is the case for guitars that are 1000 bucks aswell.
Thanks a lot for the review, I've been waiting for it for a long time! Your review helped me to finally realize that this instrument is not really suitable for clean and ambient sounds because of the nature of the stock pickups: It sounds like the treble is cut down, and the bass quickly fills all the space it needs. It turns out that with reverb there will be a lot of extra noise, which will overshadow the notes themselves. But it's just right for a meat jent. I respect the engineering approach! Your modding made the guitar more suitable for my purposes. I wish I had the opportunity
i have the earlier version of this thing, and have modded the ever loving shit out of it. it is now my most played guitar lol. i went for some railhammer pickups, 1 vol, 1 spin-a-split, and a mini toggle
I have quite a few G4M guitars from their standard G4Music brand to G4M, Sub Zero, and Hartwood. Great value for money and brilliant modding platform too.
Man, you made a amazing baritone chug machine, and then tell us how cleans sound so awesome and meditative on it, but didn't write a clean part into the demo track. Awesome mod project, didn't expect you to whip out hand made pickups for it, so that's an awesome bit. Looks like I need to check out what else you've done.
Strings Direct get a little annoyed with people trying to find strings long enough for this guitar (Ernie Ball's Bass VI sets DO NOT FIT). They recommend Fender Super 250's Bass VI Nickel 24-100 Bass Guitar Strings and I just swapped the top string from this set with the Ernie Ball Bass VI because the Fender string snapped when tuning up to the Loathe tuning. Be WARNED.
I want to try one of these. It seems like it’s not as easy for those of us in Canada. Your pickups sound great. Cleans are tricky with this tuning and you nailed it.
This sounds so good, those pickups sound perfect. I have the Aria Pro II J'B-tone with a 30" scale and use the 13-72 Ernie ball 6 string baritone set for drop E and love it. Removed the neck pickup and swapped the bridge pickup for the Nova pickups Omnia and it's perfect for clean and distorted.
I've recently finished building my first scratch built guitar, a telecaster. But I've already started planning to build a seven string baritone for Drop F# and it was really interesting to hear your ideas on lower output for clarity, might have to look more into what pickups I'm going to put in with that in mind. Great vid!
Excellent work. I'm considering getting one of these and modding it. Regarding the ball-end of the bass string- how tricky do ya think it would be to drill out the hole a bit more so the ball-end isn't sticking out? cause that would really bug me.
I bought this guitar a couple months back, last of the sub zero branding. Going for a super double low D, and really needing some other pickups. I can see why they have opted for a PAF design, but I deffo need to get some new pickups in this thing for more articulation. Also looking at perhaps sticking a roller bridge on there as well, I went for 90 from stringjoy on the D tuning, I was worried about the string length from other suppliers, but if you select Bass 6 when getting your order they come longer (may be helpful for future ordering. your cleans on that coil split sound insane, very very impressive way you have worked on this guitar, I am 100% going to be taking note and improving mine.
I used bass strings for the lowest 4 strings by Ernie Ball because they had the most variety(95, 75, 55, 40, 30, 22). Removed the tone pot and moved volume pot to the spot where volume used to be. It was an issue to palm mute the high strings. Idk why most bass vi string sets are so unbalanced when it comes to their gauges, it'll be lowest tension on the low E and way more on the higher strings, bending them is almost impossible (props to you heavy handed demigods).
I will buy one in polar white this weekend. I really like your clean tones of your pickups. I think I will change the pickups later if I'm used to this 30" monster. Pickups with lower output and more clarity in the tones would be perfect. But some good pickup sets are more expensive than the guitar...🙃
I've got the same instrument and my Tech fitted some Schaller M6 135 machine heads (a perfect fit but a bit pricey at nearly 200 pounds). I've got it tuned Drop E + Drop A - a la Loathe; ready for my Octave Method blog. Got the strings from Strings Direct - a custom set "designed" by their Tech, it plays pretty well.
would it be possible for you to down tone rundowns at some point? i'd love to know what you use and how you use it to get such MONSTEROUS tones for your baritones or just your guitars in general!
"A Bass VI ... inherently doesn't work well in clean ..." You gotta check out Soft Machine's song "Bundles" from the album of the same name - or the whole album! Roy Babbington on Bass VI keeping up with Allan Holdsworth on guitar, mostly with clean tones. It is early fusion/prog, so perhaps a bit outside your listening style, but that album is what got me started on the baritone/Bass VI kick!
I like the clean tones that you got with your mod. (Sorry, no interest in high gain / metal tones.) Without coil splitting, what are some more affordable pickups by Artec, Donlis, Roswell, etc. to get closest to that sound? What partial strings sets did you use?
OMG just get a router lol (I dig this still! I spent my afternoon doing wiring and routing for a Jet Strat that how has 9 sounds, new bridge, and sustainer!)
I had the same issue with the Stringjoy 80 on my Agile 830. The good news is that the 80 works on the G5260. Are you sure the 80 D'Addario electric single won't work ?
You got lucky. I ordered 2 guitars from g4m both of them had thorns sticking out from the fretboard edges. Returned both. Thing is that they make guitars with a lot of mojo and character I just wanna see them win, but they are just not looking out for the QC issues. I went with Harley Benton after. Playability better, but not enough character. So yeah the tradeoff is that it's very playable out of the box. I'd take that every time over cut up palms.
Hi Ryan, you say you are using thinner strings 13 -72, right? Do you tune your guitar with these strings also to E? I want to try thinner strings gauges, but I want to tune it to E. D'Addario has the XL 84-24 bass strings, the only thinner string set was the Ernie Ball baritone set 72-13. Could you write me what strings you are using?
ive been looking to get this guitar for some while now but have gathered that switching out strings becomes a problem unless you aim specifically for a baritone or bass set that can cover the 30 inch scale length. im guessing theres no workaround for that? i was thinking of putting in something like 10-54s and tuning to a drop B or A tuning
I've heard some pretty dodgy stuff about Gear 4 music, especially with shipping and delivery Such as late or no delivery at all, and not refunding when there's no delivery
these look so awesome but that new red sticker G4M badge they're now putting on their guitars HAS to go!! subzero or G4M at least have it as a white on transparent logo.
I have 8 str guitar drop E and I found the sound is better than Baritone. the Baritons guitars have a muddy sound with the drive. Sounds like shit Distortion without attack, just like a noise
it would probably work initially, but the lighter 4 strings are going to have too much tension if you tune them up that much also wouldnt really sound that good either

wish they would've kept the SubZero branding
Even though I think Subzero is a terrible guitar brand name but is a million times better than the current name.
they shouldve just kept Rogue as the brand imo. Imagine "Rogue VI" without subzero or G4M. With Rogue in a clean font as the logo on the headstock
also the subzero headstock looks killer!
Same, SubZero sounds way cooler than Gear4Music
And the old logo was so much better then this red rectangle
