You got me so excited !!!! Been waiting for this from you! I have the Hanwei Rattan wrapped su-yari, but when they have them in stock I will totally get the one you are handling...it's a little longer and better for tameshigiri ! Anyway, thank you, the yari is the unsung hero !
Sorry. I do not have any of that type of Okinawan weapon. It is cool though. I used to have a few of them back in the 1980's. They are unwieldy, but super fun to swing around.
Thanks for sharing this information about the yari! Quick question: Why do yari of this style often have a notch at the start of the blade? It seems that it would be a weak point. 🙏
Yes. Fullers in blades can lighten the steel up as much as 30%. But they are also a possible weak point of contact as you said. They also help the smith widen the blade. Doesn't mean that the blades could be snapped easily, but the grooves did have a few purposes.
Thanks for the reply! Sorry my blade terminology is limited. I wasn’t referring to the fuller. I was asking about the part that narrows right after the shaft, which seems like a particular vulnerability. Again, thanks for your reply and sorry for the confusion I seem to have created due to my lack of knowledge. 🙏
The sword market is a joke these days Particularly online. If you dont find a maker yourself youre likely to get ripped off and that includes the popular shops. Particularly pisses me off that the Japanophiles just crank out half decent katana and pretty much act like that was the only weapon in circualtion😂 You cant find a a wushu weapon worth dick, at all. And good luck finding someone willing to forge a Moonblade style weapon who wont inevitably upcharge you for the time. I just want a Decently thrown together Jumonji and thats a short sword on a stick. 500 bucks i dont even need the pole. and a Fangtian Ji that isnt freaking stainless steel.

The blade shape reminded me of the spears of my ancestors in Africa.

Hi. I am not sure why? Might be a great question for a sword smith?
I find it sad that this is never practiced and even more that most of the techniques have faded away in time.
The thumbnail i thought you were Lynn Thompson
Hey man what do you think of hadome (parrying cross bar) on the Yari?
Great video, thanks. Apparently my name, Gary, means spear in old English. Must be a shared etymology with the Japanese?
Nice
Sword = for fighter
Spear = for warrior
What? All sorts of people used both, lol.
