If you really get into the song, and you go back into it after some kind of a break, the direct compress/prep on 1 / release on 2 of a cross body lead just feels so much better (in my subjective opinion) than the whole stiff blah blah do 3 steps, pause, and at last lead on 5, etc... YMMV of course.
yes, usually the on1 ( LA style) its more commonly taught, since on2 ( new york style )needs a student that understands better the timing and the "clave "of the music, and yes as the time passes the on2 make more sense or feels more natural
