The last performance, I was legitimately unsure if Austin Butler was in the scene at all, because he was just that good throughout the whole thing! He definitely disappeared into several scenes. This may be the best Elvis biopic that can make me feel like I'm really watching Elvis himself. Like Bohemian Rhapsody did for Queen, but way better!
Oh it was better than Bohemian Rhapsody for the sole reason it didn’t follow the formulaic and dull biopic format. Those biopics are a dime a dozen and we needed something different and unique.
the movie was epic I felt the impact of the film you saw a bright bubbly young Elvis go from healthy good kind hearted family man to a 1973 shadow of what his was. He was tired over worked and exhausted in 1977 you saw nothing Elvis was already gone he was just a shell of his former self. Yes drugs may have played a part of his demise but Parker was a major part of his decline and fall.

Me too! I remember the day he died so vividly, and I was only 12. I've watched this movie over and over again and Austin Butler has brought Elvis back to life for me.

Well I only think of Rocketman that's very much a different biopic movie mostly about singers than anything we've seen because it's not only take a traditional biopic roots but also combining with musical fantasy element to it which I really enjoyed and makes the movie a lot better
Was in packed theater for maverick when they played this preview. People heard n saw Tim Hanks goofy drawl and bad looking prosthetic face and there were literal groans. It made me so uninterested. Jeremy seems to be thumbs up on this.
Loved the bit where he got to meet a young Forrest Gump and learnt that iconic leg move dance with him. What a legend that guy was! That's all I have to say about that. Edit: Thank you for all the likes. Love you all.
I just finished watching the movie and it was fantastic. Incredible performances from the cast great directing, great story, it was a great way to introduce Elvis Presley to the younger generation so that they can appreciate the work that he did during his short time on earth.
I like the idea of a short “mini series” show about the Beatles, with each hour long movie quality episode representing a different era in the Beatles history.
I'd love that, but also I kinda like the idea of a 4 part series, where each part focuses on a different Beatle. So it's like you're seeing the same events play out, but from a completely different perspective. Same events, different stories basically
@@JBrotsis1 It's fine if you don't like the Beatles but you can't undersell their achievements and just how much they truly changed the foundations of pop music as we know it.
Just hearing Austin’s interviews you can tell he really poured himself into this role and it shows. Luhrman’s visual style looks like it really elevates this movie. The two part HBO documentary called Elvis Presley: The Searcher was also quite good and highlighted the person behind the American icon that is Elvis (I think it’s on Netflix too).
Dude i stopped your headache causing banter review. Not sure your coming off with a serious review on the movie. Dont drink redbull or 16 5 hour energy drinks before u roll vid.
I saw this movie with my mom tonight for my late sister(who was the gigantic Elvis fan in the family). She would have absolutely loved it. I am surprised how much I wound up enjoying it, and a lot of that is thanks to Austin Butler. He really drew you in with this intense and passionate performance, with absolutely a lot of his heart into it. I'll repeat what so many people are saying in so many comments sections, if he doesn't win any kind of award for what he's done here, there is something wrong down in tinsel town.
Austin Butler did very well in his role. I feel there could have been a bit more soul into the film itself. I was looking forward to seeing who Elvis was, as a person, as a father, as a husband, as a son, as a friend, how he met his wife, their romance, what challenges he faced growing up, how did he overcome those challenges to get his first record deals with Sun Records, what he felt when his first record achieved success, what he felt on anything.
Yea his acting was great but the movie was missing a lot of heart. We were told certain relationships were important but didn’t get to see them in action
This movie has a two way perspective though where it isn’t told 100% from Elvis’ perspective but rather 50% Elvis, 50% Colonel Parker. Still i felt the whiplash of how quick they skim over his childhood only giving us a basic understanding of what it was before going straight into the Hayride performance. While I don’t think the movie lacks soul, i’m still intrigued that a film called Elvis is really only 50% of Elvis
@@Butwhythough881 Ig you could argue that’s part of the point they were making. A “star”, like Elvis, is very much the person playing the face of that brand, but is potentially just as much the Snow(marketing and management). That the Colonel(among other people) IS the Elvis we know. People like him shaped the exact venues, specials etc. Kinda explains why friends were asking Butler’s character to just be Elvis instead of ‘the face’ and why they put such a focus on the circus. Still, I would very much prefer the movie to be a straight biopic of Elvis’ life lmao
Exactly, this movie felt like reading wikipedia about elvis. I was expecting a lot more of what happened around the end of the film DURING the whole film if that makes sense. More dialogue and personal scenes with him instead of a overview of his life narrated by another character. Still a great movie, but it lacked in that department for sure.
@@robertfrost8264 glamorous like pop is, flashy. Women love it, so I wouldn't write it off as gay unless you want to quicker pave your path to becoming an incel.
I've always thought that a Nirvana biopic could be great. Some very crazy shit went on with the band behind the scenes. Also just the idea of some underground grunge band accidentally becoming the biggest band in the world, and basically starting a cultural movement, is interesting to me. Would be tricky for time reasons so maybe a miniseries would be best. Also it would have a depressing ending with Kurt and all. Still would be interesting to see.
The music in this movie, my god it never stops and it’s all so goddamn good. The gospel, the rock and roll, the blues, all mesh together so perfectly. Baz made his masterpiece. Austin disappeared completely into the role and Tom Hanks was his usual creep self. My one minor gripe is that we didn’t get any fat Elvis time. The downfall and the descent could’ve had more time spent on it but that’s it. 8.3/10
What you mentioned about one accepting that's what Elvis looks like is exactly how I felt. Austin doesn't really look very phisically similar to Elvis, but he does it so extremely well, that you don't think while watching the movie, that you're seeing an Elvis impersonator, you feel like you're actually watching Elvis
Jeremy's explanation of the "why" of this movie at the beginning of the review is so important. I had no interest inherently in seeing this, but now I understand what could be the draw.
I'd love to see a biopic on Bass Reeves; he was a slave to a confederate officer who he punched out during a chess match and then ran north to become one of the first black marshals (if I remember right). He was so hardcore Lawful Good that he brought his own son in when a warrant went out for his arrest. Walked for miles in the heat to show up at a bandit hide out pretending to be one of them, to capture a pair of murderers. Survived several ambushes including being stuck between 2 horses and nearly shot in the head. The guy was /really/ good at his job and a fair and just man in all his dealings from everything I've read.
I took a literature in music class in highschool and one of our units was dedicated entirely to Elvis and the impact he had. Our teacher made the point that there have really only ever been three (a group is one of them) world superstars. Elvis, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson. While we have had many many stars since then, he made the point that no one has come close to capturing the same fire as all of them did. While it easier to become famous now than it was then, the market is also saturated. Elvis is the precursor to that kind of fame, his debut coincides with many things that gave him an advantage and his outstanding sense of performance captured everyone. Sure we have groupies now who will follow a band around, but Elvis set the country and the world in some sense on fire. I actually like his voice and music too.
@@hamasathecold7842 it’s really not just about the music. It’s if you can fly to United States to Japan all the way to Africa and ask regular folks if they know who all these people are. Maybe not even hearing a song. Elvis and MJ and the Beatles are definitely top 3 though.
Just saw it tonight, an absolute masterpiece! My mother is a major Elvis fangirl, so I was raised on the music and the legend. It gave an even deeper look into the man I've admired since childhood and gave me an even deeper respect for him and his legacy
The best thing about this review is how you yourself see how these managers that go onto TikTok RUclips or Instagram and find people to exploit while also setting them up for a future of addiction. And not just to drugs, but now also the feeling of being loved on these platforms. We need more movies about that!
I'm really happy this movie is good, my grandma always loved Elvis and every time I see thing about him I think of her, I never was a big Elvis fan but I can't wait to watch this. P.S I don't know why, but I LOVE when you PUNCH the screen at the end. thanks for doing it again!
I just lost my Grandma on Easter this year. Elvis was her favorite and one thing I got from her was her love for oldies and rock n roll. Going to see this for her.
My Great aunt raised me for 6 years of my life. She passed away in 2013 while I was in foster care. She was obsessed with Elvis and when I seen the trailer for this I just know she would've loved it. I'm glad I was right and I really hope to see it soon.
This was one of the few movies I wanted to see on opening day and my wish came true and I saw it. Instant #1 movie of the year for me no doubt and sometimes I really did feel like I was just watching Elvis. Austin butler did an absolutely phenomenal job and I hope the man gets the attention he deserves. The style, the music, the pacing all was so perfect for me. I really would recommend watching this film
Just watched this movie tonight. Wow. It broke my heart, and I wasn’t expecting that. To see how he was used and abused financially, just tore a hole in my heart. That poor man died at 42, so young. Austin Butler and Tom Hanks gave stellar performances.
What's love got to do with it (Tina Turner bio) has always stuck with me. A really good portrayal and doesn't do too much of the skipping around in time. More has a moral to the story or goal you could say than to just give highlights of someone's life.
I loved What's Love Got to DO With It!! Great life story on Tina. Still happily married & living in Switzerland! Her hubby just recently gave her one of his kidney's because she had some health problems! Good man!!
Saw this one on an early screener, Austin Butler absolutely CRUSHES the role. I'd be shocked if he didn't win an Oscar for it, I think a nom is a foregone conclusion.
@@Sam-zx4hd eh not really. Depends on the quality of the movie anyways. If it's terrible then no way the actor could win an Oscar for playing the real life person. John Travolta played Gotti and that turned out horribly anyways 😂

I'd like to see a biopic about Cecil B DeMille. Seeing him when he's trying to make Ben Hur and dealing with the deaths on that movie could be interesting.
@@trendybistro Three drowned during The Ten Commandments flood scene, someone was shot in the head during the filming of "The Captive". Quite a few deaths associated with DeMille.
First of all Cecil B DeMille did not direct Ben-Hur. Second, the urban legend that a stuntman was killed during the chariot scene of Ben Hur and that it was left in the movie has been debunked. There was however a fatality on the 1923 original where a stuntman was tossed 30 ft in the air and died of internal injuries while filming the chariot scene.
I'd love to see a biopic of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with Vigo Mortensen possibly playing an older Tom. Or a biopic on just the making of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. That alone is a crazy story.
Best biopic I've ever seen. If Austin Butler doesn't get an Oscar nomination, I will never watch the Oscar's again! His performance is breath takingly amazing. He sings all the songs of young Elvis and has his body movements down perfect. I've got a new heart throb to drool over
Didnt think id be one of those girls in the crowd of the first performance , but my god his acting brings out that chest tightening swooning feeling suprised the hell outta me it was like he was turning into him with each line 💗
Austin Butler is proof positive of what happens when a talented actor is given good material to work with. The only other show I have see him in was the terrible Chronicles of Shannara MTV series. He just seemed like a one note pretty boy. I never would have thought that he would be equipped to play so such larger than life character, like Elvis.
Saw it over the weekend, loved it! Austin Butler did so well in this role. He really encapsulated Elvis with his look, voice, mannerisms, everything!! Heartbreaking story however.
I saw this movie 3 times opening weekend! Loved it....yet at the end of each viewing I had the same sad feeling & tears. I never knew Col. Tom Parker's story and this movie shared it. Yes, without him Elvis never would have been a superstar but Parker was a manipulative, controlling person and most definitely played a part in Elvis' demise.
A Chris Farley or Robin Williams biopic would be interesting to see. Kind of looking into the darker depression they struggled with in their life amongst all the joy they brought.
@@yourmother3207 Chris Farley had a lot of layers to him. Yes he had issues with drugs and hookers. But, Chris Farley is actually really fascinating. They guy was willing to do anything to make ppl laugh, even making fun of himself to an extreme degree. The Chippendales skit with Patrick Swayze, is a perfect example. He was actually afraid and didn't want to go out there without a shirt. He had to talked into it. After a few rehearsals, they showed him jumping up and down. He hated it, but then Sandler pointed out how amazing he was on his feet, and that only Chris has the ability and agility to pull it off. And he was correct.

Elvis Presley is my favourite solo singer/singer of all time and from the 1950s!!!! I am REALLY excited to see the movie, it's not out here, but I really want to see Austin Butler's portrayal of The King of Rock 'n' Roll! The movie really looks good!!!!!
For me personally a Sam Cooke biop has got to be made. Everything about the man is legendary, even down to his dodgy murder with the theory the CIA and the likes had a massive hand in it. Would be madness not to do one imo
@@johnpaulmurphy9536 u know that was the first guy a thought of when I was thinking who could play him. Would be a great choice if ideally he could sing a bit also
The core thing that the movie hit spot on is showing us the struggle that Elvis went through and it did that perfectly and you feel indeed like your watching Elvis's life unfold. The sad part about it all is that years before Elvis died. He had already left the building.
just seen this movie today in the cinema and I'm still in shock. I can't even really form coherent thoughts on it yet, except that I hope a director's cut of this is going to be put out. my only real complaint of the movie is that I wanted more of it. Austin Butler was absolutely extraordinary, particularly in the 2nd half.
I'd love a biopic of John Coltrane. He led an interesting life with loads of struggle. Hell, a lot of those jazz guys from the same era led similar lives where they burnt bright and died quickly.
Thought this movie was phenomenal, my parents have always loved Elvis so naturally I have too. My favourite aspect was the speed of the film. For a long movie Baz made it fast paced, similar to the short yet energetic and even unhealthy life of Elvis Presley. Being younger it helps me gain a better understanding of his experiences in a theatrical setting (obviously not exactly how he experienced it)
Very few actors can nail the essence of an iconic performer. Not every actor has to LOOK like the icon they are portraying. For example, Jennifer Lopez didnt look exactly like Selena, Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe or Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, but their performance was outstanding. However their performance has to convince the audience that THEY are indeed the icons themselves. Not every actor is able to pull that off. Either they were made for that role or they weren't.
My life has changed after watching the movie. I have never listened to Elvis' songs. Sure I heard his name and everyone says he's a legend. But I have no idea about his career. I don't even know that Can't help falling in love is Elvis' song ! (I just know this when watching the movie, my reaction is hilarious 😂)After watching the movie, I watched every video of him performing, I listened to his songs. And now I become a huge fan. I'm obsessed with him now 🥰 I wish I knew him from long time ago. His music is amazing.
Not even an Elvis fan but I think it's pretty good to depict anyone who's considered a legend in their field in a realistic and vulnerable way rather than just glorifying them all the time and putting them on a pedestal that doesn't actually exist, because no matter who the celebrity is or how larger than life they become/seem...they're still only human and will have flaws just like anyone else. Btw, I NEED to see more Jeremy Jahns-doing-Arnold Schwarzenegger-impersonations! I almost died when he did that at 2:42 🤣🤣☠☠ I could literally watch a 10+ minute video of just him talking in an Arnold impersonation lol 🥰
As a huge Elvis fan I was very concerned about what they would do to him, I basically thought they were gonna make a hit piece and almost Disney Star Wars him. Glad to hear my concerns likely won’t be coming to fruition.
My grandparents were massive Elvis fans, they had a memorial room FULL of Elvis memorabilia... It always amazed me looking at all the Elvis things they had, I was left with my grandma's TCB necklace that my grandpa had made out of their first wedding ring... I wear it all the time, gotta say I'm stoked to see this movie
This move was great. I don’t know if it was the direction, the cinematography, or the editing but it was just beautifully shot. Felt like an actual MOVIE! I don’t know how to explain it.
Austin Butler's performance was incredible; I vividly remember him from Zoey 101, iCarly and even Aliens in the Attic...I always thought he was resigned to those kind of roles and then would just fade away, so I was glad he was selected for this role because he delivered on every last drop
Crazy that I grew up watching all 3, I spent so long after the movie trying to figure out what he was in just because the name has always stuck in my head
Walk the line was s good biopic. And it's wild to think they didn't want to show Elvis hips on TV. I dunno if I'll hit theaters for it but do wanna peep it.
I am shocked we haven't had a big-budget major motion picture about the Beatles, especially about their touring years. We've have TV movies and a few indie films about their early pre-1964 period and 1969-post period (Nowhere Boy starring Aaron Taylor Johnson is about teenage John Lennon), but we've never actually had a film that details the 1964-1966 touring years/Beatlemania, or the creation of Sgt Pepper, the White Album and Abbey Road. I'd personally like to see a two-part film. The first focuses on the touring years (I'd have called it Eight Days a Week if not for the documentary, but you could also call it Meet the Beatles after their first US Capitol album). The second focuses on the studio years. I'd reckon a film about the Beatles would be massive at the box office. The Beatles are still hugely popular and relevant, even more than Elvis. Even a lot of millennials and Gen Z (my generation) love them. It'd be a hugely dependent on the casting. The Fab Four have very distinct and iconic personalities. And all four were hilarious and witty. You actually will need a British comedy writer to help write the screenplay.
I was so excited to see this pop up in my feed. I really thought this movie would be sidelined by my favorite RUclipsrs tbh. Been dying for this movie since it was announced in 2019
I’m interested to see a Keith Moon biopic. I’m fascinated about his lifestyle during the 60’s & 70’s. I have a actor in mind to play Keith Moon which is Barry Keoghan.
Omg he’s come a long way since Ned’s Declassified. I kept thinking he looked so familiar. It was such a good film! Can’t wait to see him in more movies ☺️
Knowing what I know about his history (The Colonel), I was intrigued to see Hanks' portrayal. The Colonel is one of those influential characters that most fans know was Elvis' ultimate undoing, next to his own demons. His tale could be held up as the ultimate cautionary tale of when talent meets greedy devices. Austin deserves a spotlight and I look forward to his trajectory from this movie alone.
Absolutely loved it! I had middling expectations; wasn't impressed by the trailers. I loved austin butler as elvis; he killed it. The performances were fantastic! Tom Hanks as Goldmember/Colonel Parker was very interesting. Never really heard Tom do a voice other than his own. I loved it so much and will be seeing it again soon :) thanks for the review Jeremy
Tom Hanks got the accent completely wrong though. As a Dutch person it's quite funny to hear how his accent doesn't even sound remotely like a Dutch accent.
Just watched ELVIS yesterday...I am in SHOCK!!!! I knew NOTHING about Elvis and had only heard a few of his songs on the cartoon "Lilo&Stitch"(ya I'm an adult😆). Austin Butler WILL win an Oscar for his performance!! This is the best biopic in years and to me, the best movie of 2022 so far✊🏾
I saw this movie today and LOVED it. I totally agree with your review (though I have yet to really disagree with your views on things and I’ve been watching for 10 years😅) and loved your take on how this is a cautionary tale. Thank you for that point.
If Id say one thought or emotion that this film gave me after viewing it, its optimism. Or rather, the feeling of me being able to achieve whatever dream or goal I set my mind to. Elvis was such a greater than life person, with so much to give its hard to say he and his whole being was anything but inspirational. I think this film was a masterpiece.
The Hayride scene is from Elvis Presley performance at the famous Louisiana Hayride Country Western Show that was at the Municiple Auditorium in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Funny you mentioned Arnold, because I think his life would be a great fit for a biopic. An immigrant man becomes the best bodybuilder in the world, then a movie star, then becomes governor of California and so on... I'm sure there's a lot people don't know that would be cool to explore!

@@sandwichsupernova Would be weird because Hanx is in both movies...
You hit every nail on the head. Wasn’t much of an Elvis fan prior but now I’m obsessed with the legend. This movie was so good. 20/10
That would be awesome but difficult to find the right actors to play them
@@rileymachelle4088 Yep. I was just gonna same the exact same! One story. Four diff beatle perspectives.
Beatles are so overrated and have over saturated pop culture. I’d like your idea but with Led Zeppelin.
@@JBrotsis1
It's fine if you don't like the Beatles but you can't undersell their achievements and just how much they truly changed the foundations of pop music as we know it.
So excited Austin is getting praise!! Can't wait to see what he does in Dune Part II as Feyd-Rautha
Oh that's gonna be good.
Yeah, woulda been nice but... That'd be a 6-8 hr movie
For those who felt that this movie's style is a bit exaggarated and over the top, that's just Baz Luhrmann's thing
Guy's the more glamorous version of Zack Snyder, in some ways.

Hell yea. Who could play Kurt?
@@BananaMan-sb9rj Charlie Heaton might be a cool choice.
It’s funny too because I think Austin would do a decent job as Kurt
Charlie Plummer.
yeah, would be fun for us fans to ponder who will play the murderer of Kurt. I suspect they can just get Courtney Love to play the murderer.
8.3/10
I want a biopic of Guns N Roses. I can just imagine how crazy their rise to the height of fame and the characters can make that a compelling movie
GNR movie would definitely be interesting.
I agree. I like this idea
The LA rock scene from that era deserves some movies. I've read a few books from some people who lived it and it was coke fueled madness.
Who cares?
Keanu reeves as Duff!
And he was the inspiration for the Lone Ranger
Taylor Sheridan (creator of Yellowstone) has a Bass Reeves series coming out on Paramount +

The Rolling Stones
I’d buy that. Though, I don’t know how much impact they had? It’s not really my era of music. But yea
I’d love to see something on The Bee Gees. The more you look into their work the more revolutionary you see they were.

I've never been an Elvis fan, but I'm strongly tempted to go for many of the reasons you mention. The trailers were actually that intriguing...
You should ,i never cared for elvis either but the film was very good
This was one of the few movies I wanted to see on opening day and my wish came true and I saw it. Instant #1 movie of the year for me no doubt and sometimes I really did feel like I was just watching Elvis. Austin butler did an absolutely phenomenal job and I hope the man gets the attention he deserves. The style, the music, the pacing all was so perfect for me.

I'd like to see a biopic about Cecil B DeMille. Seeing him when he's trying to make Ben Hur and dealing with the deaths on that movie could be interesting.
What deaths?
"I must've killed more people than Cecil B. DeMille"
Dark comedy type beat
I'd love to see a biopic of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, with Vigo Mortensen possibly playing an older Tom. Or a biopic on just the making of Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. That alone is a crazy story.
Vigo mortensen playing an older tom petty is something I never thought about but damn that would be some great casting

Each time I went home after seeing it 4 times, I felt so sad. I cannot explain that. So I watched a lot of interviews with the cast.

The sad part about it all is that years before Elvis died.
He had already left the building.

Thought this movie was phenomenal, my parents have always loved Elvis so naturally I have too. My favourite aspect was the speed of the film. For a long movie Baz made it fast paced, similar to the short yet energetic and even unhealthy life of Elvis Presley. Being younger it helps me gain a better understanding of his experiences in a theatrical setting (obviously not exactly how he experienced it)
Austin crushed it! He did sooo well!

Awesome review as always Jeremy, I appreciate these reviews more than you know
My life has changed after watching the movie. I have never listened to Elvis' songs. Sure I heard his name and everyone says he's a legend. But I have no idea about his career.

Walk the line was s good biopic. And it's wild to think they didn't want to show Elvis hips on TV. I dunno if I'll hit theaters for it but do wanna peep it.
I loved this movie. I'm not an Elvis fan but nobody can deny that he was an amazing singer.
Agreed been saying this forever we need that movie
We may not need it. The "mockomentary" _A Hard Day's Night_ captured the essence of Beatlemania at its very height perfectly.

If Id say one thought or emotion that this film gave me after viewing it, its optimism. Or rather, the feeling of me being able to achieve whatever dream or goal I set my mind to.
