No worries; the core four is still intact so regardless who wears the "C" the Leafs will continue the remarkable playoff runs their fans have come to expect. Matthews isn't a leader -- though he might moon an official if he disagrees with a penalty call.
The Leafs have gotten a nice refresh in Management and Coach, on Defense, and now Mathews is the new Captain. Can hardly wait to see Matty in game one wearing the blue and white sporting the C.
Great perspectives as always Victoria! I’m excited to see that ”C” on his jersey and am also interested to see what that means for Tavares going forward both this year and beyond. One thing for sure, a new Matthews jersey will be required for many of us in the very near future, which of course is an awesome thing! :)
Hello Victoria, totally agree with you on Mathews as the choice for captaincy. Tavares as you pointed out is slowing down and stands to reason his ice time will decline, he knows this too and is a class act to make this a smooth transition. Mathews is a franchise player, likely to play most of career in Toronto. Cannot be said about rest of team. Will be interesting to see how season goes , enjoy your day..................................Cool if you were behind bench for a game, such a dedicated fan.
I think Matthews has been improving in the post season, the most recent one there was down to illness rather than a lack of effort or trying. He's definitely not the biggest postseason problem on that team imo
@@VictoriaStewart Have you seen his reactions, like when Tavares scored the series winner to advance? Even his 2 goals in the first round. He seemed more upset then happy
Two more days of distraction for Leafs Ownership. Keep em busy and not concentrating on roster construction. Changed the GM but don't allow him to address the core, so meaningless change. Changed out the coach , maybe some minimal impact on the team. Change the captain, meaningless change that effects nothing.
I think their success ultimately relies on the core all showing up in the postseason. Without that, they're never going to go on a deep cup run I think
@@VictoriaStewart Yes and That's always been the situation and the problem. This Core on it's own (63% Of the CAP) hasn't been close to good enough for the last ten years. They have lost in the first round each year except for one and generally have been the sixth or seventh or eighth best team in the league as constituted. The core has generally been good but Not good enough to get out of what is and what has been a very good division let alone challenge for a cup. Changes have been obviously needed at least since they lost to A pretty bad columbus team in 2020 or a bad habs team in 2021. The problem is the unwillingness to address the team's actual serious problems and in fact spend time doing meaningless stuff to try to keep the fan base distracted from the fact that this team can't win a cup and the sooner they get away from this team the better.
I can't wait for the next season to start. John Tavares was picked to be captain because Matthews was too immature. I think he has grown up and now behaves himself. He will be a great captain. BTW, why are all the backgrounds in your videos mirror images? I love your videos BTW. Do people actually play hockey in your country?
Totally agree - hopefully it's a smooth transition of captaincy and JT can still have a place on the team that's suited to where he is in his career. Oh that's how I film it haha! And yep we have pro hockey over here 😊
@@bvyup2112 maybe in some numbers but over all talent, Matthews is waaay better. Has way more potential. All Brett Hull had was that deadly slap shot. I dare say Pat Kane and Modano are better players than Hull. We shall see.

As I said in this video, I would've been happy for Rielly to get captaincy, but for reasons which us outsiders can't know, Matthews was the better option. Matthews has certainly been showing more leadership qualities in his communication with the team on the bench and in a way becoming the 'face' of the Leafs imo
@VictoriaStewart It's not just on the ice, it's locker room too. On the ice, his leadership seems to consist of "give me the puck". If you watch his play, he rarely likes passing, in the O zone, unless he's expecting a pass back. Once in awhile he'll set up another player but never seems all that happy unless it's him scoring.
Dumbest comment ever. *Reilly is the longest serving Leaf on that team, the number one D who has one extra first round playoff exit under his belt. Reilly is not even a top 10 D man in the NHL. What in the world screams "inspiration and lead by example" there?
@@Thisisbailie, your comment shows me you nothing about the game or what it takes to be a leader. Your best players are not always your best leaders, George Armstrong was not the best player and lead the Leafs to four Cup wins.

@sals79 I'm not denying that he's overpaid but he's still a far better captain then an American that doesn't care about winning on a Canadian team. Atleast Tavares gives it his all, even if it doesn't always look impressive.
Just came across your channel! Great content, keep it up! VERY excited for AM 34 to wear the "C" under Craig Berube!
Thanks so so much - absolutely love your content! 👏🏼

Thank you 😊
