How come there’s no sound delay when there are explosions far in the sky ? Did the camera men at the time not know about the speed of sound leading to them putting the sound track earlier on the video ?
A bit late to reply, but most if not all editing at the time required the editor to physically splice not only the video but the audio as well, and considering how most people at the time had never really witnessed modern war, some editors would take artistic liberties and do things like matching the explosion sounds (some of which were dubbed over the original sound as well for more oomph) with the footage of them exploding. True to reality? Not entirely. Quintessentially 1940's newsreel? Absolutely.
The audio is fake and was added by sound engineers. They knew about the speed of sound but audiences prefer sounds and action to occur at the same time.
