This is excellent. Ordered my usdx8 through banggood to Australia so should arrive mid-March. Will attempt this antenna build for it as well.
Impressive 5 watts with a portable antenna! That is the perfect setup for HT. The radio is so versatile 10w with battery, but I love how you can use this anywhere with built in battery under $200
Ok, now I'm gonna have to try that too ;-) Another excellent video! Tusin takk!
That is a good idea ! I'm more impressed with how well that radio. Thanks
Absolutely fantastic! My uSDX should arrive here in Australia this week. I can't wait! Fantastic job on the antennas OM! 73
Thank you, so the 20m version is for 20, 17 but 15 and 12 are also possible. I just saw it right now 73
Hey postie did your uSDX arrive yet? cheers 73
Круто!!! 👍👍👍
Нравится когда люди с правильно "пришитыми" руками и творят.
Жаль что не понял, на какое расстояние были проведены связи.
Но всё равно я впечатлён. 😍
Outstanding! Lookin forward to your next video...
Bravo! Fantastic job with 2W from the hand.
Wait 1h for my new video ;) it's going crazy
I made these antennas in my childhood.
Back then there were no plastic pipes, I rolled cardboard and on top of it a medical bandage soaked in epoxy resin.
there were not many parts, so the antenna was an integral part of the radio.
We also added a 30 - 70 pF trimmer capacitor🙂

Sorry i would likes to know where have you put the capacitor. Thanks
Hallo David,
Du machst Sachen sehr schön ! Das geht ja echt klasse mit QRP....!

Awesome video love your channel
Beautiful video !! Good job !
Very nice!! Thank you for the video!
Instant like and subscribe! Good for you making your own antenna system! We need more of this. 73
Thanks, next video this weekend
I just subscribed man! Great idea!
Thank you for sharing how to do it!
Nice! Qso Congratulations 👍❤️
Gut gemacht! Genieße Deine Outside Aktivitäten!
Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing
Gran trabajo!!, 73.👍
Great video thank you for the awesome content
Good night, congratulation. Very good Qrp and antenna. CX3CC 👍👍😀
I have ordered the radio through Amazon about $180. I built one antenna and used 35 feet of AWG 12 srtranded wire. I used an empty plastic bottle alcohol and a babys safety pin to puncture the insulation to tune it. Im pretty sure it wont work so I plan to build another one using a 2.5 inch plastic drain pipe. I will use 14 or 16 gauge stranded wire because David shows in his video a very flexible blue wire. My 40 meter group meet around 7,100 mHz. Good luck. HP1Kl
Und das sogar ohne Gegengewicht. Nicht schlecht!
Many greetings,

Woow wonderful usdx 👍👍
This is another great video - your other two reviewing this QCX derived transceiver are excellent. I have also had very encouraging success on both CW and SSB using the internal battery power with good audio reports over 1200 Kms on 20m and 40m. The CW features are especially good. Built like a brick though firmware is a little flaky it adds to the QRP fun! 73 G3SNT
I have been using mine on CW tonight and am certainly impressed for the price . Nice to be able to make so many adjustments for CW for the price . Will be looking for the German version to see price point as I want to use these to replace my old Xiegu X1M's that I use for beacons , so I need a few . Haven't had time to try WSPR yet . 73 W5COV
Great video, Thank you
David ... IMPRESSIVE! Keep up the great work Sir! 73, KF6IF
Holding it, you become the counterpoise... Nice!
Good video and good channel, suscribed!

Thank you, very nice and funny!
Fun to build and a lot more fun to operate
This is so sick, I've always wanted a handheld qrp HF radio. Especially handy for mountain topping.. Loving your videos!
Thank you, next video will be interesting as well 😉
I am guessing.you meant SLICK
@anthony I meant sick, as in "that thing is sick as fuck" building one myself this weekend for my new qrp rig.
Nice video, 73 from France, let's catch up on the air soon 👍
Muito boa a antena, parabens pelo video, espero te encontrar no DX a qualquer hora
Excellent!
muchas gracias por tu experiencia.... saludos desde Chile, CE1NT/M, Manu. 73
Cual es el nombre del conector, para buscarlo en ebay? Muchas gracias 🤟
Usar PL (so-239), BNC muy dificil
Great video, I'm looking for an indoor antenna, I think this is a nice solution. Thanks!!!
ein Hammer Video
Good video
Top antena !!!!! Parabéns!!!!
hello what is the antenna (model) and where can you buy it
greetings from northern Poland 161 BD 515 op. THOMAS
a frantic amateur radio operator. and that's great ! :) R1BFJ 73!
Thank you for this video! I've made the 20-m antenna on 32-mm spool, my peak SWR is around 1.5. Unfortunately the 40-mm spool didn't work for me at 40-m, the lowest frequency I was able to achieve while tuning was 8 MHz. Probably a bigger 50-mm spool is needed (and anyway, the SWR won't be great, I'm afraid). Though I've successfully tuned the 40-mm spool for 14 MHz, with peak SWR around 1.2.

Bravo QRP!
Would it be possable for you to do a video explaining how to design this style antenna so we can homebrew for any band we want . I would love to know how you figured out how many turns amd where to tap the coil
Just unbelievable.
Uau, Very impressive. 73 from PU5IAN.
Great movie, great thing. I ordered the same radio, waiting for delivery. Antennas are at the stage of making and tuning. I hope to hear each other at QRP / P someday. 73 !!! SP9DB-Kris
Poland will be able on all bands
Super!!!
fantastic terrific Great excellent you number one thanks 73 from kb2uew
ottimo lavoto
Wow!!! You are truly an inspiration!!! Great effort, great work, and great budget!!! 73 KO4VNX
A ham radio polyglot. That made me smile. Well done. Je spreekt zeker ook Nederlands? (QTH Aachen, ich denke: ja! :-) ) I am very happy I stumbled upon this video, liking it very much… I subscribed to the channel.
Novices (Technicians intl) in The Netherlands have access to 7, 14 and 28Mhz on 100W max. as of last year so I’m looking into dx’ing! This diy antenna and rig are the perfect low budget and portable way to do just that. We only lack the mountains, lol. Thanks for all the info. 73 PD0WVS.
Bedankt groeten uit Aken
Perfect om best regards

Awesome and valuable information - thanks for sharing it David. 73 Lynn NG9D
Thanks you have good youtube content also
Duuude I've been looking for that whip for days into aliexpress and no results. Where can I get one? Now I NEED the antenna you made
Hi very interesting your coordination it looks like gamma ... and what HF device are you working of 2W? .. 73
Ideal para moto
viajeros.
Si usar lo tambien para moto viajeros
Hi David.
Do you know if you are still able to get the 1400 mm telescopic whips…?
I can only find some poor shorter antennas around 1200 mm.
Great project.
See you- Jimmi OZ4HJ
Just one comment on the BNC connectors used on these antenna, I have found that they are not very stable and move somewhat and I question the suitability of them being used. What I have done is to mount the antenna onto a backframe with a thin coaxial cable connecting between the antenna and tvcr. In winds, the antenna whip will sway and eventuall break imo. I hope that David will use a better connect for the next projects.
Hello budy, how are you? My name is Emanoel, I don't speak English, so everything I watch on your channel is through google translation. I would like you to explain in other words the materials used in the manufacture of these antennas with coil. I did not find the Telescopic antenna of 140cm.
Hello, thanks for your video. Does this radio have a scan function ? Amazing result with this small radio. Thanks for all.
No
Buena idea 👍🏻

Thank you, I like your channel ;)
Perfect i like ! 73 de TA4AU
Nice build! Watched a few videos from you with it, but now I have a few questions;
would it be possible to make multiple taps to the 40m coli to use 20, 30 and 40 on one Coil, so you don’t have to switch coil ?
Wat is the length/diameter of the pvc pipe ?
Thanks, 73
Rick
Yes it will work but you have to change the position of tuning
David, klasse video und Bau der Antenne. Hast du eine Teileliste ? Was für Kabel qmm hast du genommen ? Danke Wolfgang DL4MV
Hallo Wolfgang
Braucht man da keine Radiale?
Der Operator ist das Gegengewicht, das ist alles aufeinander abgestimmt
Since coming back into the Hobby of Amateur Radio . I haven't made a single QRP proper contact in 2 months. Blasted out by 2.5kw stations. The QRP calling Channels blocked. Cheers from old George in the UK.
Build my dx wire antenna (other video) you will do hundreds of contacts from the first run
@@QRP.lifestyle Many thanks for suggestion but I have already 1/2 wave end fed. Magnetic loop and a multoband vertical. But it wont stop 1kw and 3kw people using excess power. Especially on the qrp calling freq. Cheers from old George
Very nice job! 73! de UT0UM
Excellent video. This is what I needed. Just finished building my two bander (20,40) uSDX. I bought two fiberglass telescopic fishing rods (just 135gm weight). Plan to run a wire inside. Will a 3 meter element have any advantage over 1.5 meter? I can remove one section of the pole and shorten it to 1.5 meter.
3m works a lot better but the coil must be +- half of the windings.
@@QRP.lifestyle Thanks. Will do a 3m. Will share the outcome.
@@handyman7147 please let me know
Are you sure about the wire beeing only 0.75 mm2 (copper inside) ? It seems to be stroner in the video. And is it better to use stern instead of flexible wire? What happens when I use stronger wire? Thank you for the great info and you made my day too...
100% sure
David... I note you return to same location when testing antennas and radios. Is this near your home QTH? What is altitude? De W3SI
It is in my location about 200m
Great video, one question, can I use coax cable from BNC connector to the radio?, I couldn't find the BNC connector with the screw at the bottom
Is possible but a little bit other tuning is needed
Why is the 20m coil shorted by 1,5 and 5,5 turns and the 40 m coil not ?
Hello... feel where i can find a bnc connector like the one you use for antenna construction?
73's de IZ6RWD
Hi David, was that a CB Whip antenna? I found some of these on ebay for around 10 bucks
No TV antenna. I am building a kit right now available soon
Nice job! Tried to make it too, using Eupen 1mm2 cable, but can only get 27 rounds on it. What is the outside diameter of your wire ? As the 1mm2 I have is 2.45 and the 0,75 from Eupen is stated to be 2.4mm outside diameter. That would make only one more round, and no way near 29.
I am using a bnc whip from eBay, which is 1m20. To compensate for the 20cm I would likely need 2-3 more rounds on the coil I suppose ?
0.75 sqare it is 1.5mm outside
Thanks. very interesting.
I will wait for a more complete review specifically for CW.
very interested in audio quality.
now i am using QCX, but this a single band radio.
73, RW9RN
The digital filters are 500,200,100,50
@@QRP.lifestyle yes, I know about digital filters ..
I'm interested in the audio quality in the receiver.
I have looked at several reviews on uSDX and in many cases the audio quality was poor. I may be spoiled for good transceivers :)
@@MrCudgel What can we expect from an 170$ 80-10m radio. For its price its nice but yes in cw its not perfect at all.
@@QRP.lifestyle I didn't ask the price of this radio. I just wanted to know about the audio quality. and as I understand it, the audio is not good.
here is a link to how my QCX works. ruclips.net/video/9TN_hvhGiZM/видео.html no noise, no distortion, no extraneous sounds.
Tell me, uSDX is similar to QCX in audio quality?
@@MrCudgel you may be spoiled for good audio...which is more dependent on the speaker a lot of times.
Thank You so much. 73 PU2AOO
I'm a ham since 1996 (Py2) and I'm off the radio for a while bcs I'm in the process of settlement in Canada. I'm going to use the same setup you have in this video (bcs that's what I can afford right now). I'm not as skilled as you so I'd like to check if there's like 3d printed version for these antennas. I just saw a video of a 3d printed coil to go on a pole, I wonder if there is one to make an antenna to use in hand help style jystnlike you're doing
Maybe I will do a 3D core
the pvc measures 54mm outside in diameter.. but how long for 40m band
Thank you for this video! Very interesting. Do you need to have your finger on the ground connection when operating this antenna?
73 de Arnie W8DU
Yes you have to
@@QRP.lifestyle So there is a counterpoise, its you....
Super😁😁👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Some information for the 40m-version:
i use the DN40 pipe, but it needs 35,5 windings for the coil. Testing with the middle wire of the coax, i found a point with 50 ohms! Now, after mounting the antenne, its exact 49,9 ohms, F res is 7,070 Mhz, SWR about 1,2.
Now i only have to wait for the radio....
And the 20m version is on planning....
Perfect
@@QRP.lifestyle what the wire size you used to wind the coil?
@@surdinkalol approx 1mm
wie hast du das berechnet? ich würde auch lieber dn40 nehmen, meine Teleskop ist aber nur 108cm lang (alte rc car funke)
@@iracG5 try and error und meine Erfahrung. Für 1m Strahler muss der Durchmesser eher größer oder länger werden sonst gibt es keine Anpassung. 73
David; Where did you get the telescopic antenna, BNC connector and what is the AWG of the cable, 73 de KP4PTT
Wire is about 1mm BNC and antenna from an radio antenna found out ebay
Very good. Ciao Tiziano. The location war jn56OI - in Suedtirol - BOZEN
Nice first contact
How long was the pvc?
Schönes Video. Muss da nun bei der 20 Meter Spule eine Brücke eingelötet werden von 1,5 Windungen bis zur 5,5ten Windung? 73 DB7BH
Je bei gleicher Windungszahl schon. Man muss die Spule einkürzen
Warum eigentlich keine Videos in deutscher Sprache? Die Antenne ist nice und das Gerät was du da benutzt schaut auch interessant aus.
Could you tell me the polarity of the 13.8Vdc power input. Also if you can give give me wiring information on the microphone plug. I have ordered one of these radios and it will be a while before it arrives in post. Cheers from old George known as G1BKI.
I dont know only use internal battery 😉
Great video and homebrew antenna! However, the drilling made me cringe (having had my brother-in-law accidently drill a hole through MY finger!)
Just just a vice, thats more safety
Good job, Dave! Shame on these11 Cowards who disliked your video. If they had balls they dropped you a note why they disliked it. Fuck'em. I like what you doing and this deserves a FATASS THUMBS UP👍👏. Keep up good work. 73's de Your Friend Uncle Guenter
