I first heard this beautiful Kurt Weill song on the album "The Concert Sinatra", arranged by Nelson Riddle for Frank Sinatra and a full symphony orchestra. It's a fantastic lyric with wonderful harmony and I thought it'd make a great trombone choir.
Simon Minshall is one of the world's finest bass trombonists and an old friend of mine. It is always an immense pleasure to play with him - very few people on the planet are as knowledgeable and excitable on all matters trombone. In this track, you will hear two Simons, three mes, and a fourth cup mute part that interjects occasionally.
The orchestration is a fairly traditional 5 voice trombone choir -with big open voicings and inner part voice leading being very important for overall cohesiveness. As we are lost in the stars, there are a couple of phrases lovingly borrowed from Holst's Planets, particularly in the cup mute part. I love the sound of a high sweet cup mute - it's a rarity nowadays but it shouldn't be!

This is beautiful! I'm listening to this as I write my lovely girlfriend a letter, as she is currently in Navy Basic Training. I don't think a song has captured that feeling of being "Lost in the Stars" like this, or at least that I've heard. There's an element of love and awe and reverence. I'm lost in the stars with this beautiful girl, and all we can do is stay in eachothers orbit and float not helplessly but inevitably through life. We can only revere the time spent together, and be in awe of our love and our adventure and our incredible luck to share in these moments with eachother.
