I like these few seconds of waiting at the end, before Valentina comes out of the music, and the audience respecting that before starting to applaud. A true sharing of passion between Beethoven, the player and the listeners.
I like how she just BARELY flinched. I probably would have jumped out of the bench and dove under the piano.
11thShadowDragon i would do the same
piano.feurich.luca
xD
I do that being in my house, and because I dont have a piano I fisnished under the table.
LordCargena
Aw xD
There's something similar in the movie 'The Pianist' :)
I think Beethoven's ghost made the light explode to test her.
+CMCdoesMusic hahaha good one.
+CMCdoesMusic haha, u have a creative mind :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))
+CMCdoesMusic, well he scared the SH*T out of me
+CMCdoesMusic Beethoven cant underdtand how much can be loud the test... is Deaf :P
edryno I'm sure that in death, deafness isn't a problem.
I was listening to RUclips's automatic playlist of you while doing some work and that almost gave me a heart attack.. Wow. Incredible performance!
10:52?
Yeah, I was sleeping with that same auto playlist. Lol
10:43 President Lincoln, how are you enjoying the performance?
10:52 BANG!
10:53 how unfortunate.......
ROFL
lol
LOL LOL
Too soon...
AHAHAASDASJDKLAJSLAKJSDÑLFKASD
I fell asleep in bed listening to this, and the sudden noise awoke me so quickly, I thought someone was shooting outside my house.
Never make the mistake to fall asleep while she's playing.
Same thing here 😂
10:53 Omg!! She handled it absolutely perfectly! I would have jumped out of my skin. Omg! BRAVA, Ms. Lisitsa, BRAVA!! Beautiful playing too. ;)
I was concentrating on something for the job, listening this song quite loud.. and then... boom. I almost shit in my pants
@@livu69 Same omg hahahah
What even happened?
Light Bulb probably burst
Warning: At 10:52 you will hear a very loud explosion from a bursting spotlight, perhaps. She didn't make any mistake but I almost fell from my chair...
+JoachimMink fuck me i fell over and banged my head against a wall
+That Guy LOL
ITS NOT FUNNY THERE IS A HOLE IN MY WALL
That Guy HOW THICK SKULLED ARE YOU TO CAUSE A HOLe IN YOUR WALL? HOLY JESUS DUDE

Oui Claude! Despite the auditorium (the venerable Salle Gaveau) caprices and idiosincrasies - a insignificative minor event -Valentina gave a impressive memorable ,strong personal performance from this sensible Tempest Sonata from the timeless teutonic genius called Ludwig.Ars Gratias!
"Ludwig van Beethoven IS the very apex from the Human Creation. He remains not surpassed by anyone . He stands reverentlly by meritus & absolute grace close near and imbricated with The Mind And Heart From God." ― Yan Ayrton, a young composer in development and evolution.
>>> .ARS SEMPER.VITA PLENA. Yan Ayrton, classical composer
This is a gorgeous performance. That's definitely an overhead stage light that blew at 10:53, because you can see the dramatic lighting drop on Valentina and the keyboard immediately afterward. compared to before when it was much brighter. She barely flinched and it didn't effect her playing even for one note !
Agreed! (AFFECT, not Effect)
. Valentina plays the last part of this sonata
so dramatically, so perfectly; it is the best I've heard.
Why, she played in 1915 in Donezk that was bombarded by Ukrainian troops.
Not many pianists would have the courage to play a whole recital on a more than 100 year old piano! The combination of your art, this piano, that has obviously a soul and Beethoven is pure magic.
I regret all the more not having been able to attend this concert due to a sore throat and painful cough that would have been criminal to inflict on you and the audience.
Phenomenal sonata...played by a phenomenal artist. I'm blessed to live in a generation where such geniuses can create the art they create.
10:52 holy shit that scared me
That's whay the title is "Exploding Beethoven" :P
lol agree..what is that?
I was doing homework , maths , and i get shock by the sound , i was using headphones XD
that was a stage light exploding, scared the shit out of me
Håkon Dekkerhus 666
I find it amazing how well she kept her composure after that explosion and continued her magic
10:52 , RIP headphone users
I seriously thought it was a gunshot, and jumped out of bed.
damn!! WTF was that? even her got scared the shit out XD
oh my gosh.... ahahahahaha... that was an explosive art! :D
I just happened to be using some headphones (and some loud one too) when that light bulb popped. Scared me to death, especially while it was in the calm, slow section....
That happens for not reading before the comments. That did not happen to me
10:52
OMG she didn't even make a mistake.
she is professional!
(she is like: I don't give a flying shit!)
+Istari Pallando whattafuck?!
+Simone Coletta didn't you hear the bang? I would've shit myself
+Istari Pallando i said "whatta fuck" because i heard it!
Wow, I had read in the comments about the exploding spotlight, and I thought I was ready for it, but when it exploded, I jumped a foot in my chair! And Valentina didn`t miss a note and didn`t jump, that is total concentration and professionalism, I`m impressed.
Yes, Dear. At 10:52, That was your old piano teacher telling you, "Don't slouch! Sit up Straight! Mind your Posture!".
And it worked.
Oh yes, lest I forget. Magnificent job, and your artistry is very enjoyable.
😂😂😂👍🏼
I'll make a wild guess that you take piano lessons.
She's so unbelievable! Great interpretation, Beethoven is just the Best Composer ever.
His is the master of all composers!
Beethoven is the maximus composer ever. No Bach, no Mozart, no others.
I absolutely love this piece. One of Beethoven's greatest works played here with total mastery of every note.Tremendous feeling and expression with a vivid imagination, but never to the point of becoming sentimental. This is the way Rachmaninoff would have played it! Incidentally Artur Schnable once said Rachmaninoff's Beethoven was the best he had ever heard.
great
WARNING: headphone users beware of loud, sudden noise at 10:52
Joseph Westhill where were you two minutes ago? damn
Joseph Westhill I should have read your comment before listening to this... = )
Joseph Westhill I hope whoever was responsible for that was promptly escorted from the auditorium and thence to a somewhat different type of auditorium as well.
+Joseph Westhill That is why this video is called "Exploding" Beethoven...
Exploding indeed. :D
amazing how she held her composure and continued on, simply amazing :)
LOL she's so focused that she barely noticed the explosion
music is not just a sheet with notes, there is an internal rythm, phrasing, swing, call it whatever, which makes music exist. And it is exactly what I think she feels best, she makes MUSIC! thank you ma'am
I must say, the 3rd movement is my favourite in the sonata :)
She's got the beautiful hands of a wide receiver, capable of grasping anything, and one of the most beautiful trills possible. This is a textbook case, I think, of the virtues of playing in steady tempi-making momentum itself an expressive feature. She lets the tunes play themselves, as in that little, importunate, meek, obsessive four-note figure that nibbles and nibbles its way through the entire last movement, ending with the quietest of swallows, the mousiest of gulps. What a pianist! She makes Beethoven so clear!
Thank you for your beautiful performance and talent. Amazing Control, Timing... The New Pianist Generation is just Outstanding... !
I just LOVE listening to you. Thank you so much Valentina for everything!! One day I hope to see you live that a dream for me :)
RIP my speakers at 10:52 lol
RIP my ears, scared the hell out of me
what was that, btw?
No. It was probably a firework or party popper. I mean if it was a light bulb, wow, that is a big light bulb.
JAJAJAJJA what was that? xD
kevito666 ripp my heart!!!
I love Valentina Lisitsa..... great performance !
Without question... one of the greatest pianists of our time..!
Thanks for this french, old and famous factory which disappeared last year to renew with the past. PLEYEL !!!
I love the sound of Pleyel pianos. It was Chopin's favourite. I can understand why.
WONDERFUL!! So you have a special piano for this concert. Amazing sound! You and the piano make a beautiful music.
You are very talented. I am so thankful that I found your videos.
Thanks for the heavenly music.
If she was playing in Titanic I bet she would go on playing until the ship had sunk. Incredible.
+C Henrique She'd keep on playing even after the ship had sunk !
+Tristan Couloumy what are you talking about...whatever it was is scared the shit out of her. It was her great sense of showmanship that kept her playing. Many others would jump up and look toward the noise and maybe assuming it was a gunshot, even run off the stage ruining the performance. She didn't because she's a true professional in every way
+Ed D do you even humour bro ?
+Tristan Couloumy If she played this sonata at the time of the sinking, I think
God himself would like to hear it to the end and therefore would not allow Titanic to sink . So, Lisitsa would rescue Titanic.
People just think of the craziest ways to deal with extreme talent and skill lmao
I'm not sure if I could have continued without skipping a beat like you did! I saw you jump, but your heart and hands just kept going - love it!
Always so beautiful when Valentina plays Beethoven !!!!!
Thank you very much Valentina! You are great!
It's amazing the way you play, excellent skill, i'm amazed by the focus and concentration you maintain ,really great.
If you listen carefully with headphones, you can hear the low rumbling sound of the subway passing 3 or 4 times rue de la Boetie during the performance :-)
I did not know and i almost felt unwell since i was listening at full blast!! This lady is incredible !!!
I had explosions of emotion. The clear bass and crisp range of treble of this piano with you is amazing. Epic
1st movement 0:12
2nd movement 9:30
3rd movement 16:18
A lot of movement 10:52
@@trardac I was going to say "bowel movement" lol
Wonderfully played, and nice to hear a late 19th century piano. I noticed wearing headphones (BEWARE! DON'T DO THIS) that at 10:43 and 10:46, right before the "surprise" that there was a slight twang -- almost imperceptible. I wonder if it was from the piano or from the light filament about to pop.
Interesting... I thought that twang was the piano!
Her left hand hits like a real thunder!! Wonderful! I keep my breath. Thank you for entering in our lives.
Oh my god I'm so happy you played this Sonata finally. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with us.
You are amazing, your play is amazing. I really love to hear you. I'm French, and I hope you will come back in France, again and again, until I can come to see you in live, front of me ♥ ♥ ♥ I had a heart attack at 10:52. I love how you remained calm, even if you have a little startled and this is normal. Professional way!
So beautiful and love the dress :)
The loud bang at 10:52 made my day, just seeing Lisitsa be so wrapped up in the performance to be completely unaffected. Beethoven would have shit a brick
Aaaaahh... Agaaaain, I listened years ago and even though got the scare again.
"What in the future will give you a scare?" -This.
So beautiful see you playing. Exploding thanks ❤️
Galaxy Note 7 in the room ? ^^ :D
lol
Guillaume Engrand nah I think they shot the guy who was coughing
😂😂😂
It was probably Kim Yon Kun farting..
Holy...! I was listening to this while studying and I literally jumped on my chair! How could she not even flinch?! She's incredible, it's a blessing to have her
Is really wise and beautiful the way to interpret the music I think you are among the best dear lady Valentina. I admire you and god bless you.
As Elton said..... "Dont shoot me, I'm only the piano player"
So, I let RUclips run on its own in the background, so I didn't see the warning in the title. I was just relaxing to the lovely piano music and then jumped five feet in the air, ROFL!! It took me a minute to realize the sound came from the vid.
Thank you for this wonderful song in full. I love doing work/studying to it.
Evan Huffaker I just found out last semester that classical music helps me with that also, as well as type faster on the keyboard, and keeps my train of thought aligned!
I have listen to the best pianist in this era and hope you all agree that Valentina is on the top of this list. Divine expression of what Beethoven composed. Can't get enough of her playing.
I was at Les Jacobins in Toulouse, France last century when a complete power failure occurred towards the end of the concert. A small torch was found which, together with a few cigarette lighters, gave enough light for Jorge Bolet to continue playing Liszt as though nothing had happened. An artist is an artist.
I'm alone right now in school. It's 5:54 PM and I'M ALONE!!!!!
No one is here and I was doing my work while listening to this. At 10:52, I thought I heard a gun shot in our building so I paused the video and went out to see what was happening. After a while I thought giving the video another try, and it was there!!!!!!!!
Phewwwwww, you scared me to death :D
Thank you for years of inspiration. 🤩
Here I thought I'd heard all the best there was of Valentina Lisitsa, but no, there is this incredible performance. Simply magnificent and true to the composer.
Nary a flinch at the point of lighting drama. Concentration and focus is important to the emotional nuances of Beethoven's work. Nicely done.
You are most Beautiful and precious !!!
I've never heard this song and (I'm no authority) it doesn't really sound like Beethoven to me. It's such a magnificent piece and sounds sooo romantic period. Thanks for uploading music; besides being marveled by how good you are I've become aware of so many beautiful pieces. You do the world a service
it sounds like romantic period thing, because she plays like it. Listen to some other people do it. It is indeed VERY beethovenish. and i do mean the word "VERY".
Achi Oragvelidze I agree :D
This piece is Beethoven's Piano Sonata no. 14. It's called Tempest because Beethoven wrote it for Shakespeare's play the Tempest. He liked it so much that he interpreted the play in music.
razhidiz uh, Ain't the 14th the moonlight?
Eliott Cohen True that. this is 17th.
this is one of my favorite sonata the way valentina lisitsa played i really enjoyed her hand movements and i wish that in future i also become like her and play like awesome
É a melhor pianista do mundo e eu sou fã dela!
This wasn't a light bulb ! This is a tempest so it was the lightning !!! :')
Anyway, awesome work as ever. I'm really sad that I wasn't in the audience... I'm French and living near Paris but I didn't know her back then...
I actually thought it was too when I read the description. I was like tight, just like Tchaikovsky added cannons, Beethoven added lightning.
Beethoven never added Lightning to this piece, it is bad that they used it in the 2. movement, it would fit for the 1. and 3. movement but not for the 2., where everything should be calm. Then there is the thing that it is Tempest sonata, but it is not some outer storm where is lightning and thunder, it's the inner one
+Yami Hayashi It was an overhead stage light that blew. You can see the dramatic loss of light on Valentina and the keyboard immediately afterward compared to before the explosion. As far as the tempest supposedly being "the inner one", this is from.....
Peter Takács Plays Beethoven
The Mind of Beethoven
,,,,,,," In the same vein, the main theme of the “Tempest” Sonata alternates
lower and higher registers in creating this image of struggle, here
perhaps between the blind forces of nature and the helpless, pleading
human being" ......... " one can recognize the spell that nature cast on the composer. For
example, listen to the spacious sense of awe in the opening of the Adagio of the so-called “Tempest” Sonata, Op. 31, no. 2, in the noble key of B-flat major" ........... "Another common way of experiencing nature in Beethoven’s day was on horseback or during a coach-ride, both often characterized by obsessively repetitive rhythms. One can imagine one such nightmarish ride in the finale of the “Tempest” Sonata, a constant, hypnotizing texture of sixteenth notes interrupted by violent sudden ff explosions".
In Wilhelm Kempff's lecture he does say that Beethoven supposedly told his secretary that if you want to know what it's about, read Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in which the Duke of Milan conjures up a storm.
Sometimes a tempest is really a tempest.
Victor Bordier
Je suis français aussi :p
SvartHal Nobody cares x,'(
its nice you chose this piano because it sounds really close to beethoven original sound..also great performance!!
still clapping in 2020 here. what a wonderful performance
I've listened to this piece at least 6 times by now and I still get startled by the sudden bang every time
Damn! WTF was that? I didn't saw the warnig!? I almost fell off my chair. I had my headphone on with high volume.
But you Valentina, you just kept on playing as if nothing happened. Respect!
Love your work as always!
I bet that was a sign for people who were sleeping to wake the hell up hahahhaha
Beethoven would approve.
+Jony Frank Was you writing to me?. Sorry, I don't understand Russian xD
One does not simply fall asleep during a Valentina Lisitsa concert.
He basically said that if Beethoven was in a concert hall and a member of the audience fell asleep he would send everyone out of the concert hall. However, judging by his biography he did not once send anyone out of the concert hall if someone spoke during his performances.
I'm not the best at reading Russian (not my first language), but he said something along those lines. :)
God I love this so much. Thank you Valentina🙏🏻
Valentina you are unbelievable. Love you!!! You should play more Beethoven, it's so full of heart.
Beethovens spirit was with you, exactly in 10:53 on the 3rd beat !! That's swing, isn't it Valentina?? ... I love this performance 🔝
i was listening this with headphones, i thought something exploded in my house
Marvellous!!!!!!!!!!!! what an Amazing and a Brilliant performance...the more you play...the more I listen....the more Envigourous we become!!!!!!!!!
Such an emotion charged performance! You are magnificent dear Valentina. You are also a real trooper to have ignored the explosion and continue with such a brilliant rendition of one of Beethoven's finest offerings.
I was doing some Lagrangian mechanics, and then I suddenly hear BANG!!. And it was said that I was accelerating towards by chair at 9.806 m/s^2.
I let auto play continue to play the tempest so I didnt see the exploding part in the name and combine that with me reading alone in the dark at 4:00 am and I was fairly scared :P
what are you doing alone in a dark alley at 4am?
"reading alone in the dark." I'm not a magician but dont you need light to see the you know the fucking words.
Online books cause I'm cheap :P
i did the exact same thing.... except i was doing homework and my heart is like dying rn from the explosion... scared the sh*t out of me lol
Merci Valentina.
Powerful rendition in sheer virtuosity! When Velentina is at the keyboard one can hear and feel the transition, the
gentleness the enchantment of the tempos in the melody. Majestic!
Bravo !!
I agree with Mila - someone must've shot the cougher! xD
Thankyou! As always, I enjoyed very much. Hope all is well!
dear valentina, thank you so much for this interpretation. at the end i couldn't stop my tears. you played so lovely!!!
I didn't understand why the title is "Exploding Beethoven" then at 10:52 I understood lol. It scared the sh*t out of me!
Hahaha, I thought you honestly meant there would be a firework or something. I expected it to be for effect when the piece gets dramatic..... but BOOM.... right during a calm section :D
Valentina, you are awesome. I have watched you play both live and on youtube Bosy's and Steinways, but never a Pleyel. The richness of the bass, but the pristine clarity andt at times, almost brittle treble came as a complete surprise. I loved it. Thank you. You are a complete master of your craft like no other i have heard in 60 years of listening. See you in Bristol..
This is an amazing sonata, very subtle, great dynamics, calmly lead BANG!!!
holy crap!!! That startled me!!! LOL!!
+Suzie Duran I see what you mean now! =)
I've watched this video at least 10 times and every time I'm expecting it and still nearly have a heart attack! Valentina has nerves of steel to continue playing like that.
Same here.
It just happens out of nowhere!
16:20 one of my LvB favourites! very nice :)
Beautifully played. What a wonderful artist!
i think it requires more technique to walk with these shoes then play the hardest piano pieces. anyway, bravo Valentina! literally. i like your channel.
OMFG WTF 10:52 ??? I was so concentrated, It almost killed me.
Valentina, I love your talent and your courage. You are a beautiful person. You raise my soul to the sky. be happy for the rest of your life. Thank you.
Valentina Lisitsa's piano, so beautiful...; I'm fascinated with it and herself as a person, too since I knew her existence last month. Centainly, I have her DVD/CD, still these youtube videos are fabulous as well. Thank you, Valentina Lisitsa.
Valentina Lisitsa.
Marat Sadykov
10:52 Beethoven Exploded
Simply Sublime. Bravo Miss Valentina.
I just love the way you play Beethoven!!! Cheers for you excellent performance!!!
