What's with predicting Tucci? He doesn't even give the most memorable supporting male performance in Conclave. I don't think it's even in the top 3 (Carlos Diehz, Sergio Castellito and Lucian Msamati are more memorable). It seems like the case of "let's put a big name from a popular movie". He's a great actor, but this isn't what he should be nominated for. I haven't seen Gladiator II because I have no interest in it, but Paul Mescal is mostly being called miscast and underwhelming, so again I don't see why he would be predicted to get in for that picture.
While I'm right there with you, and think this "Conclave" is a *perfect* example of an ensemble piece, you could also argue Tucci is the second most "visible" cardinal in the film next to Fiennes. He has more one-on-one scenes with our lead than anyone else, and we do see his character fluctuate between not wanting the papacy, then craving it, and then being humbled. I don't think he has That Scene that would've taken him over the finish line, but what arc he has (and the fact that Tucci is a known quantity) was reason enough not to write him off completely.
