      No it isnt, it just got a very generous review. In reality, nothing compares from power delivery, to brakes, suspension, handling or ergonomics. The only thing thats better is the nostalgia attached.

    I was 13 when this bike came out, and I remember the lust I had for it. I had a old clunky KE100 at the time (trail bike) which I totally loved, until I discovered 80 cc Motocross bikes. Memories!

    I had an '83 KX80 and an '84 KX80. Helped a buddy break in an '85 KX80, way back in the day. These were the kings of the Mini class back then. Was a sea of green at the start gate. Back when these were new, we'd go get a 99cc "Power Up" kit which would allow for 3rd gear starts like an Open bike and messing with many 125 riders.

      Kawasaki used to invest in their bikes and the youth side of the sport to build for the future, now they do not care, KTM are the MX market leaders end off, Kawasaki are broke and do need to fix up both their bikes and ethics! They are content with the road side of things but can't see that KTM are well on the way to dominating there anytime soon just as they let that small fish come along and eat them up with the MX!!!!!

    Back in 1987 (when I was 16-years-old) I also rebuild a scrapped '83 KX from the frame up! The frame was cracked, the engine was seized, and it was completely worn out. It took me almost 6 months to complete, and I likely also had 250 man hours into it.
    When I was finished, it looked and rode like a new bike--just as nice as the bike in this video! I sold it to a friend for a loss, but the experience was worth it.
    This video brings back fond memories! Thanks guys!!

    • @MitchRzep

    • @zshredclh10
      @zshredclh10 7 лет назад +6

      When the bike hits the high RPM and you feel the power come on that is a two-stroke basically supercharging itself there is no physical Power Band part there is an exhaust valve but that's more for a low RPM stuff

  • @meyerracingaustralia4781
    @meyerracingaustralia4781 5 лет назад +3

    Hi all.. just to clarify for you all, you Cam said you have to ride it on the rev limiter so I'll explain what he means.
    These f1s had little bottom end with a huge mid to top end and no power valve, they had to be ridden wide open and on the clutch.
    When he says rev limiter, he is referring to the break down of the ignition and very much sounds like a lean pop that these bikes had, especially on gear change.
    It was a very distinctive sound that just these early kxs had.
    Saying rev limiter is a now a day term because back in the day they didn't have one, it's just the ignition over heating, it was fixed in about 86 but in this case the engine was ported for even more top end making that ignition pop way more noticeable.

    I had a 1983 KX80 Dad and I bought it new right off the dealer floor in 1983 I was 13 years old first motocross bike. Go to the track every weekend and I would spend an hour washing it cleaning it up. Never placed any motos usually last 5 to finish most kids who did parents were rich had big trailers lot of mods to their bikes I still had fun. Later I gave up the track did lot of desert riding with friends then sold it moved up to KX125 then to a 87 KX500 by then I was 16 driving an old pickup to Glamis Dunes in Southern California loaded down with bikes. Lot of good memories my father passed on now we sure had fun. I did bust myself up couple of broken wrists and some knee damage.

    I had the same bike but an 84 kx 80 it didn't change much for years. It was a beast of a bike and in many cases was faster than my friends new bikes at the time. I couldn't even touch the ground when I first road it my dad road it then told me I could grow my toenails to reach the ground lol He flipped it the first ride home and said this would outrun his 750 street bike 0-40 at least haha
    After that he always found used KX's and built them while I never had a new bike I often had the faster bikes. My 84 kx 125 was amazing as well! Me and this young man is lucky to have awesome dads! Only wished I kept all the bikes he had bought me.

    That's a really smart rider. The kids feeling it and was able to translate it. My 2003 KTM250SX would easily keep up with a 2020 version of the same bike, it might then be a bit faster. But it's Pro level power output, you BETTER be pointed in the right direction when you grab a handful of throttle. Remember, all Jeremy McGrath added was a pipe to his factory bike to smooth out the power. And every year since my none that's what KTM had been doing, making the bike easier to ride for the average rider.
    When I tested the 2001 factory bike if John Dowd I was blown away that I could pull a 3rd fear start on it with no bog or hesitation. 2 years later I bought the 2003, keeping this bike forever.
    The new chassis and suspension obviously allows a rider to go fast with less effort. The Pro level nature of the 03 250SX demands that you are in good shape.
    But again, I'm impressed with this little kid. There are local Pro rides out there that can't tell you what the bike is doing.
    "Good on ya, Mate."

    No difference if front brakes until you get them wet. My first motocross bike was an 83 KX80, I was 13 in 1983. Next year for 1984, KX80 had a disk up front. Much better with a disk on wet tracks.
    Also the 83 was notorious for waterpump seal leaking coolant into the oil due to the rubber grooving out the impeller shaft which was on the end of the crankshaft. Only fix was to replace the crank.

    I asked this actual question to my brother only recently! I thought there would have been masses of difference in speed etc between the years, I dont feel so bad now as thought evolution meant I was a lot slower than the kids of today and now I know it is only marginal :-)

    I had one of the F1 bikes back in the day and I will tell you this it was a screamer my buddies hated me because my bike was way more gruntty on the bottom and I would spank them off the line every time. The rest of the bikes revved higher but by the time they got wound up I was already way out on them. Team green since day one.

    Most surprising think was the brakes. I guess the real brake test is how the new disc work over time once they get pretty hot and can stay effective.

    They have found and tested an 81 Susuki RM to do a comparison. The 1980 to 1981 RM 80 was the fastest bike in the history of Motocross production in the 80cc class. Not many people or mechanics or riders ever questioned that fact either.
    They actually went back to that years engine design many times. The engine itself that year was found to have been a flawed test engine design that Suzuki under poor management chose over their intended design accidentally. And then thrown together in a hurry. That engine was the smallest, lightest, had the smallest crankshaft and the smallest stroke of what was never intended to go into production or to have been considered feasible for an 80cc engine.
    Its was intended and meant for shipment to bottom market countries as a cheap replicate-able one off of its high class big brother 80cc as a toy. Somehow the torque and power-band ratio with the tiny stroke unintentionally created a whirlwind effect causing the crankshaft to spin on an inertia almost twice as fast as any engine of that size and 79cc bore. Unbelievable quick throttle to ground response launches on that bike.
    The bike did have its problems though. It was cheap in the frame components and the foot pegs would break off. Our team broke six frames in the first season. We had to heavily modify them with tig welded bottom engine mounts to dampen the vibrations causing the lower frame tubes to crack. But that bike and anyone who raced it could enter any 125cc class or an open-class against 250's or larger and win it. It was just that fast and quick.
    I raced the Kawasaki 82 model water cooled also. Bought it brand new in Lubbock Texas. It turned eyes but on the track it had its problems also.
    Mainly the engine mounted water pump was mounted to close to the engines head and the plastic impeller shaft would melt after a race and had to be replaced. They finally came out with an aluminum replacement but by that time it was too late.
    The most troublesome though non mechanical was the radiator mounting brackets. We wound up having to wrap them with copper wire twisted around the mounts with duct tape to stop the mounts from busting the radiator and splitting it open.
    The copper would allow the rubbing to damage it instead of the radiator. Kawasaki also in 1982 had the widest conceivable handle bars of its time. Bike was easy to manage but could get you banged up in tight spots though. Lol
    Its good to see other youngsters having the thrill of a time likewise. Nice Video. I'm too old now to get on one but I do still drive a Honda TMX 125cc here in south east Asia. Our trike is a 1975 Kawasaki 2 stroke incidentally with a power expansion muffler added. It can haul 20 sacks of rice weighing 106 kilos and move really good. Lol Besides toting the family of eight around here on the Islands.
