This is my shortest review ever. 😁😁 To be fair, I didn't intend it to be that way. It's just that they're pretty standard desktop speakers that don't do anything really wrong. Just a few nits to pick but otherwise, excellent desktop speakers.
that would depend on which model you’re talking about. I’ve reviewed a fair number of them so you should be able to look at those reviews and find your answer.
Astute point wrt ~86dB nearfied/midfield, as that's why 85dB is most often used professionally as a mix anchoring level for consistency and translation, etc., w/mixing and mastering. iirc, that aligns w/OSHA's suggestions as well, for 8hr exposure, A weighted.
I just bought these last week and they're really quite good. The frequency response I've measured against smaller genelec and kh80s and the results are surprisingly close, even giving the edge to the MTMs at some frequencies. Yes they don't get loud and they don't get extremely deep but for a small sized desktop speaker or monitors besides the slight treble bump they are extremely linear and the built in dynamic EQ with the mic makes them sound a lot better. The imaging is also fantastic. Compared to the competition I really thought these were worth it, at least in my use case.
I have the originals, and was so satisfied with them, I purchased the Precision 6. The crossover point was set to 120Hz for the MTM's. I do not comprehend complaints about bass response with such tiny speakers. Physics is physics, period. Even the Precision 6 are helped with a subwoofer, with crossover point at 100Hz. Very small sweet spot for the MTM design, which is what the MTM design is known for. Having them away from a wall is required, as is required from any speaker that is rear ported. Sound stage is very good, with very accurate positioning after calibration. I would be hard pressed to find any speaker in that size capable of similar sound reproduction for a desk setup.
How do you like your Precision 6? been wondering about getting a second pair for my studio. I have a pair of Neumann KH310 which I like a lot but would be nice to have something different to compare. My mixes are for classical and jazz so don't need/care for a bloated bass!
@@themastroiannis I really like them. Unless you are listening to organ music, these will be more than adequate. They dig deep without bloat if not using a subwoofer. The precision series uses 4 point room correction instead of 1 point, so you can "expand" the listening area's sweet spot by widening the 4 points during calibration. As they are not MTM, the sweet spot is wider as well. They do not sound as good tilted for angle versus directly straight on tweeter to your ear on a platform. The platform I use is from the desk: softwood, hardwood, softwood, hardwood, followed by the included isolation pads. The source is an RME ADI-2 DAC FS Black, and a Fireface UCX II is used for multiple inputs, directly plugged into the ADI-2, for reference as to sources. Positioning left-right is dramatically improved compared to MTM. Sound stage depth as well is infinitely better, the MTM's have a shallow sound stage depth, but can not be beat at the price point compared to others.
Sweet spot is by no means related to D'Apollito ( MTM ) driver configuration - Linkwitz Riley 2-nd order has a broader polar response than LR4 ( that's more common in pro applications ) if you have any supporting your claim, I'ed love to know., otherwise I will have to call it out as a "Myth" that hangs around like a bad smell ;-) A bit like "egg shell crate" as an acoustical solution - that one always gets FacePalming :-)
@@bluesteelbass It's the "essence" of a D'Apollito configuration & what's "weired" is that you don't know it & you made a broad statement about MTM & imaging
I've heard these a couple months ago when i was on a long weekend break with some friends. We rented a small house and a friend brought these speakers with him. The house had stone floors and massive amounts of large glass windows. Nonetheless when I heard the speakers I was pleasantly surprised how good they sounded. When we crancked them up I could clearly hear they ran out of gas but at moderate levels they sounded quite nice. Especially the midrange was very 'clear' if you will. I did notice a bump in the highs but it wasnt so much unpleasant as it was noticable compared to what I am used to listening to at home and at work. The narrow dispersion in your measurements might well explain why they still sounded so 'behaved' in a stone floor and glass 'walls' room. I think if anyone has the budget for these for a desk or (very) small room then they won't be disappointed. If however you are planning on mixing mastering then I am pretty sure there are better options out there even at that price point. Just depends on a lot of things, for example the type of directivity just to name one. Thanks for your review Erin! As you say: the data helped me understand what I heard! :)
I have these speakers, bought them as a B pair to my Focal Trio's. First off, the transient response is pretty incredible with these. If you set these on a desk, apply correction, and mix; you can honestly get a great mix straight out of the box. The high end is definitely boosted, as seen in your frequency response measurement, but this can be fixed with correction. All in all these things are fantastic for the price, as well as portability.
CerwinVega! Has a new powered 10” 3 way studio monitor out that would be really neat to see some measurements on. It plays loud and very clear. I’m pretty sure they would send you a pair. They are very easy to get a hold of through a phone call 🙏🔈👍🏻
I have the iLoud Micro Monitors and they are great. Definitely sound bigger than they are. Amazing for the size and perfect if you have little space available.
Bought those speakers for a compact 2.0 bedroom TV setup on mic stands and I agree that the treble is a little bit hot if not tuned. The bass near the wall is really good. It doesn't quite shake the bed, but you're not really missing out on musical content too much. The MTM design is funky. It doesn't hold a candle to my pair of Genelec 8331A when it comes to consistency. I will be replacing the iLouds with an all-Genelec 2.1 setup soon enough. The iLouds belong to a tight nearfield desk setup. That said, I am impressed by their clarity at medium range (3m). It appears that the tight dispersion has some upsides. I needed a stop-gap solution and I figured they will be easy to put on a desk later on.
Erin, again great review, I liked this one very much, I am rocking the Logitech g560 system the sub is quite large but it does not matter where I put it. This system for my works so so well. I use my eq on computer to fine tune but, the system arguably is as good as some of my book shelf speakers I have had over the years. I have it mostly for game system but, I also listen to music often on them. Loved your review. Cannot wait for the next. caviot- I had a Bang & Olufsen 8000 system (got lost in a fire, grrrr) back in the day. They have lots of various gadgets from soundbars to home speakers to portables. Would be cool to see you get your hands on some of them. The system I had Coupled with a pair of ADS L810 was stunning in sound and looks. Take care, Payers to you and your family.
I've tried designing desktop speaker myself and it's hard! Especially if you put them on the desk and against a wall, it's very boomy. And in my room it can get pretty loud and the response is pretty much flat. Distortion is much higher than my full size floor standers which is expected. Interesting review, a lot of similarities with my design, except I have a 2 way design with single but high excursion midrange woofer driver. The tweeter is a full range driver.
Thanks for the review. I asked in the the Kali LP UNF review comments if they were comparable with the iLouds MTM, but you didn't reviewed them at that time. So I ask you again, Kali LP UNF or the MTMs? For context, I'm using a pair of Mk1 MTM and I don't like port chuffing and very little headroom, using them to mix/play electronic music in a small home studio.
I think you can see in the Kali review that they have better distortion and compression metrics. But the MTM has the calibration to get rid of room modes. What's more important to you?
@@1337sim1 thanks for pointing that out! So if the Kalis would "solve" the headroom problem (and probably port chuffing) I guess I have my winner here. I can add room correction with like a t.racks DSP and REW and still spend less money than the MTMs stand alone. With its 4 outs It could be also useful to throw a subwoofer into the equation, or eventually add a Kali WS6.2 and call it a day. Thank you
I ended up returning my iLoud Micros after very audible distortion way before the light switched to red letting me know it was clipping, like really low listening volumes. Not sure if it was an issue with my speaker specifically, or just a nature of the beast for such a small speaker. Thought about going with the MTM thinking more size and more SPL meaning less chance of the above, but after reading about all the QC issues on the MKI, avoided it. The MKII definitely made my ears perk up because I really wanted to like the iLouds given their performance on a paper. Nice to see a review from one of my favorites finally on the MKII. I am out of the market now for near fields- but really hope for good things from this speaker and hope it has less issues than the original MKI. Edit: for reference, I ended up going with the Kali MM-6 and paired both the micro and the MM-6 with my SVS PB 1000 Pro. Playing the MM-6 at the same volume as the Micros, I preferred the Micros. The iLoud monitors really are great, I'm just torn on their QC based on my own experience, and what I've seen people go through online. Kali customer service on the other hand is leagues above and beyond.
Sounds like they were defective. I've had a pair of the Micros for a few years and they get crazy loud before any distortion. They'll just limit the bass past a certain volume level. They're currently mounted above my stove in the kitchen and shake the whole room without any audible distortion. Way too much bass even with the switch at -3dB, but they're just super fun kitchen speakers.
I'd like to see your take on the Edifier S3000 mk2. They're in a similar price range. A pro-audio mixer I like recently switched to them for studio monitors and raves about them.

Conflicted because I'm weighing these against the LP-UNF. The MTM are priced at $1300/pair where I live versus the $350 for the Kali. I intend to use them for general listening in my vinyl set up (technics 1210 + DJ mixer into a high-end SPL DAC) both in nearfield while selecting songs (DJ stuff) and then further down the room as I sit on the couch and just listen for pleasure. Caveat is I’m restricted to just 5 inches of space between the back of the speaker and the wall. Given all of that, would you still recommend LP-UNF over the MTM MKII? Decent bass is important to me.
