Jerry Useni was the most senior in rank (Lt Gen) but had a non military portfolio as the Minister of the FCT, while Abdulsalami Abubakar (Maj. Gen.) held the highest military office after Abacha (C-in-C) as Chief of Defense, due to the incarceration of the Chief of Gen. Staff Oladipo Diya (Lt. Gen.), who is next in line to the C-in-C. So it’s quite straightforward. However, this is not to say other ‘typical Nigerian’ political and personal factors were not in play.

He is smart but tends to embellish stories. When the senior Military officers met in Aso Rock, they agreed among themselves to appoint Abubakar. Mustapha did not like Abubakar because he was a no nonsense senior officer who never bowed or sort Mustapha's favor. When the senior officers agreed on Abubakar he got up and they saluted him. He sat immediately on the Seat of power and Mustapha was enraged but he was outsmarted.

Unfortunately, Gen. Useni had no troops he commanded then, he would have invaded the Villa and declared himself the new Head of State. Seems Abacha knew he could potentially topple him, hence giving him a weak role that commanded no troops. He was already weakened by this before politics and the religious factor played its role.

Even late General Abacha knew that Useni would have being tempted to topple him hence he made him Minister of Transport and later FCT Minister .
With this Useni never commanded any troops to suggest he would have being tempted to topple him .
Abacha cherised his friends and did so much to protect them on like IBB who would look away when it mattered like Vatsa .
Abacha had already made it difficult for Useni to succeed him with d appointments given to him.
Don't forget was once a strong GOC highly feared especially with role he played in quelling the 1990 coup

Alright, something ain't adding up here. How is it possible that the Chiefs of Staffs (Army, Navy, Air Force) got to know about Abacha's death before the Chief of Defence staff (Gen. Abdulsalami)????? If the chain of command was properly observed......Gen. Abdulsalami should' ve been the one breaking the news of Abacha's death to the Chiefs of Staff. There must've been a breech, ain't no way Gen. Bamayi and the other service Chiefs ought to have been in the picture of such a serious security situation before the Gen. Abdulsalami ( Chief of Defence staff). I'm of the opinion that it was a good thing Abdulsalami became the "C in C".......... Jeremiah Useni simply doesn't possess the qualities of a leader. No disrespect intended, I'm just keeping REAL. Jerry Useni's military colleagues know he wasn't competent enough....... hence they kept him away from key command appointments. Being FTC Minister was just a "consulatory" gift to distance him from the real military elites.

No mention. There is no documentation. But you remember what Bamaiyi later went through. He was locked up for quite a long time upon the coming on board of a new administration. I have gotten a copy of his book from Amazon and his story will be told here soon.
