  • Have a look at a small vintage coin safe, the "Wealthometer" built near the turn of the century. I have to break into it to reveal what's rattling inside.

    How exciting. My gramma had one from our local bank. The bank tellers had the key, so you would deposit the money you had saved directly into their bank. The numbered brass plate reflected the account number where the money would be deposited.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  6 лет назад +10

      Oh wow, how interesting. I could see that each bank had their own brass plate riveted to the top, and that they were all individually numbed, but I couldn't figure out why. It all makes sense now. What a great idea for customers to save money. Thank you so much for the history. BTW, I wish I had set up this video a little better, the camera was one inch from my nose and the safe was almost two feet away from that. I couldn't see a darn dates. LOL. But at least everyone else had a good view. :)

      Dr. G sir , those Penny's from 1939 and the 1946 could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars , just saying you should take them to the bank and ask about it ,I have spent years looking for a 1943 s penny.It could even be worth millions.

      I had a lot of fun with it as well. (except the key making part) lol, Even after I figured out the key shape, I realized the lock was binding inside. "difficult to turn". But I couldn't spray any WD-40 in there for fear of damaging all the fantastically expensive coins I was going to find inside.... LOL Thanks for the comment. :)

    As always, some of the best videos on RUclips. Well shot, properly lit, and today with a classic coin bank. Simply excellent. And you are quite correct, they don't make quality items like this anymore.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  7 лет назад +1

      Mark, I really appreciate it. I do my best. It's hard to believe that this item was manufactured in a time when horses and buggy's were the common form of transportation, and home electricity was just becoming available to the middle class. Quality and craftsmanship was the norm then, as opposed to simply quick profits, like we have today. Thanks again for the nice comments.

      @Dr.G  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, that would have been cool. But I was thinking if it had been full of coins, and the key being held by the bank, someone long ago would have broken it open. I think because there was only a few things rattling around in there they left it alone. :)

    The reason you didnt have a key was that the Bank Institution listed on your bank held the key. These and other shaped banks were made to promote saving money by children. They couldnt access them. They would fill it and take it to bank. They would empty and then deposit it into a bank account. I had one in the 40, but different shape. Pretty simple.

      That was a warded key. All it is, is a blank with the metal removed where there are "blocks" in the lock. I've opened them with a bent paperclip, if that is too weak, try a metal dental pick.

    • @Dr.G
      @Dr.G  6 лет назад

      Jason this gem was extremely difficult to open, even with the correctly shaped hardened key. Since it hadn't been opened for probably more than 60 years the locking mechanism was very stiff. I couldn't spray any penetrant on the lock for fear of damaging any coins inside. I used to pick master pad locks as a kid with paperclips, and I use dental "pics" everyday LOL. Neither of those would have come close to opening this little bugger. Thanks for the comment.

    • @jasonsprouse2803
      @jasonsprouse2803 6 лет назад

      Thanks for the correction. Now I can look like an A-hole spelling it "pic". Look it up. And back to the issue at hand, I'm a certified locksmith. In the video I can see a warded key moving a lever, there is no true spring loaded latch like a warded padlock etc.

    My grandma gave me hers it was so awesome I put old coins in it I was a young collector, and lost the skeleton key and it has a flap type opening with a handle made out of brass . I’ll never forget it :(?broke it open when I was like 7 so sad and lost the parts. The house was sold and I assume it’s still underground :( mine was different though it has one large opening on the outside !

    I'm amazed thst you could make a key. I bought a similar box from the Scottish Trustee Savings Bank at auction and I'd love to get it open. I've been to various banks including the current Trustee Savings Bank but their keys don't fit my box. Please do a video explaining how you worked out the key pattern and how you made the key.

    1944 penny may be a steel cent, and worth a bit. So you'll understand why no key, no it wasn't lost or the like the bank kept the keys to these, you had to take it to the bank to open it, hopefully to deposit the money.

    thanks for sharing that the bank was worth more then you think check its sale price and registrations on ebay and see if it has a very good value for being patented during the time of our century,it'll pay off just to notice you may just be able to keep it polished up for savings other good finds and coins to share with grandkids ,or sons and daughters and things you may have too.Dennis ,I say its worth keeping in the family.
