My husband and I were at Mt. Vernon today on a mini-vacation, on Bastille Day, looking at....the Key to the Bastille. It is a great symbol of liberty for two countries. Bushrod Washington is buried near Geo.'s tomb. Thanks to all who maintain this great living monument.
Thank you for visiting us. We hope you had a great time!
The hands that key passed through, and the scenes of both horror and hope that it was present at, if only objects could speak, what a story it might convey. The letter that accompanied the key speaks volumes to the character and loyalty that Washington instilled in those around him, truly he was a man of rare character, we know he was born but believe he was sent.
Well said. For details about the key, check out shops.mountvernon.org/collections/bastille-key-collection/products/george-washingtons-liberty-ke-25739
Visited Mt. Vernon for the first time last summer. When the docent told us the story of that key I got chills. Can't wait to come back and visit again.
Please excuse me for being so obtuse. But I remember when in early "90"S when my wife 'who worked at the New York Stock exchange told me about this new thing- the "Internet". In those days, we had to access it via putting a telephone receiver on to the "modem". She always told me that I would find it very interesting because I am a History nut. In the ensuing years, I finaly "got it". That the Internet was the begining of the " Information Revolution". The world has completely changed since then. I know I sound like an old fossil, but--cell phones aside, the ability to access information at the touch of a finger is as astonishing and world changing as the invention of fire, or the wheel! I find myself drawn to the Internet from the crack of dawn till sleep time. My wife was lost in the World Trade Center tragedy on 9/11, but I will always thank, and think of her for opening my eyes to this next great leap forward. I am 62 now and still lonely after 17 years.
When I walked past the key on a tour and saw it just hanging there, it was quite an historical gut-punch. Took me completely by surprise.
What a testimony to liberty. Thank you for the care shown.
The highlights to my visit to Mt. Vernon was the Bastille key, the Cupola and those sinking floors, the cellar with the graffiti from potential a Union soldier, the ledge the always hits your head as you climb down the stairs from Washington and Martha's bedroom, the study with those amazing hutches, and the fireplace :)
Awesome video!!
I would love to just hold it for a second
Bushrod Washington. There's a great name for you.
And did you know he was a Supreme Court justice? You can learn more about Bushrod Washington here: www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/bushrod-washington/
Ironic how the French Revolution and the American Revolution went hand in hand but Louis XVI was a large contributor to the American cause against Britain
Cool! I LOOVE it!!!
I can't wait for all this COVID-19 stuff to be put behind us so I can take my family on a road trip down to see the President's estate and pay respects to the man himself. Being a veteran I have great respect for the General and the steps/risks he took to establish our great nation. Hope to see everyone at Mount Vernon soon!
Thanks for the head's up! I looking forward to seeing the Central Passage in it's new paint! When will the Key/Case be reinstalled?
The key is on display now in a temporary plexiglass case, we'll keep everyone updated on the case's return but it will not be long. You can follow all of our updates on our blog: www.mountvernon.org/blog/
Blog: Didn't know you had one - now I do (and it's in my Favorites)! I live in Arlington/Alexandria border about 1/2 hour north of the Estate. It's one of my favorite place to go!
I never realized the case for the key was the original.
Great information thanks
