As a goth ( with a very personal cultural twist on it) since 22 years now, it is always funny to see that some years, you are avant garde so fashion week inspiring, sometimes, you kind of blend in because everyone is wearing black, and others people look at you as if you were an outdated antique dusty halloween decoration.

goth for 24 years, here. you are absolutely correct. we truely have seen this a couple of times over the last 25 years. it goes hand in hand with this whole hatred/fetishization cycle we are exposed to, constantly. people either hate us or they fetishize us. now that the bigtiddygothgf has run her course, its back to being insulted and accused of being pet sacrificing satanists, and to being a halloween decoration

      That! Goth fashion is gorgeous!!!!
I have been wearing a mix of boho and grunge style for 17 years now...with colorful makeup and all.
Sometimes im super stylish and sometimes im too much.
Also the renaming of styles is hilarious... So boho clothing is now called fairycore and grunge is whimsigoth.... Wtf?

sorry to all people in the subcomments: all this "-core" stuff isnt real. and to argue about how "that is xy-core" and "NO! thats clearly yx-core!" is absolutely pointless and serves no purpose. its like back in the day when black metal heads made up a whole new sub genre just because someone played a riff 5bpm faster than what was already established

You have a unique perspective and an understanding in a sea of people who are doing this but are uninteresting. I’m subscribing because I want to see more of your knowledge of fashion. I was a shopaholic, a complete horder of fine leather goods and designer clothes. Now I just need to downsize and I sell on eBay and Poshmark. I use videos like this to see what’s trending and for pricing. It’s crazy. I’ve recently gotten a surge of buyers for my leather handbags of the 2010s. Gen Z has come into the age of consumerism and wants fashion that was trending 14 yrs ago. Crazy! 20 years ago we never saw anything repeat that fast.

Great video, but I’d like to add- your clothes do NOT have to be ‘flattering’. If you love an item of clothing but it makes you look shorter/bigger/whatever, you can wear it anyway! Your body does not need to look a certain way or fit certain proportions. (Of course, if it’s important to you that your clothes be ‘flattering’, go for it!)

The main issue: most people are not in touch with what they actually like. Get in touch with what you like and decide what you actually want to project : power, beauty, approachability, etc. Then factor in reality (body, weight, weather, budget, activities).
    Proceed from there.

You nailed it in the last 3 seconds of the video 😂 it's about the "why." Why is something trending? Why are you wearing that and not something else? Why is hard. A lot of people run from their why. I think trend following is just a way to avoid answering that question.

This reminds me of 2016 when a bunch of my co workers would say “I just happen to love makeup I’m really passionate about it”. Like it is a quirky character trait, like girl the whole world currently consists of people baking contouring and using the entire color wheel on their eyes with a cut crease due to a tsunami of beauty influencers with 5-50 million followers each. Heavy contour makeup w the concealer outlined brows is not your independent quirk

Sad that all of this is catered only to women..
men don’t have “big influencers” or style trends, and if they do, they’re done for a long time and we don’t have “micro trends”
Also staying off social media is the best way to find your style. Go out, look at clothes. Try them on. Don’t follow the “body type” trend. Buy things that make you happy

Men frequently imitate idols & participate in hegemonic masculine embodiment through clothes. Should b careful about that. Men r also extremely affected by toxic body ideals. The way men participate in fashion is often 2 conform. & trends still shift quickly 4 men. So this is certainly applicable 2 men, even if less-so. I can recognise this cuz I’m a man but I chose my own sense of fashion.
Men’s fashion trends typically deny personal style, instead being a communication of conformity. It’s a very different discussion 4 men. Fashion & gendered behaviour is very segregated. U actually need a video specifically on men’s culture around clothes & fashion 2 cater tips 4 men.

This video is amazing and it actually sums up my whole idea about fashion. I was trying to watch some videos on the "2024 trends" and it's a concept that feels very weird to me. I can understand that it could be someone's hobby to follow trends and keep up with them, but for the rest of us, it's completely unrealistic. I love my converse too, i've been loving them since I was a teen, and now in my late 30s. Adidas superstar too, I have a bunch of those sneakers as well. I may have slowly transitioned from skinny jeans to mom jeans, but I will always be faithful to my high waisted ones. More rounded toe shoes, cinched waistlines and natural makeup. I know what looks best on me and I will continue wearing it, even though every now and then I do buy a "trendy" piece or adapt an older item to the current one. I also do believe that people in my country, and specidically my town (in Romania, Eastern Europe) dress very badly. I've seen sequins and rhinestones at 2 pm, fake leather pants (from black to cream to green!) at noon and half an inch of foundation on the face when strolling in the park. Maybe some don't care, but some seem to care about very poorly made clothing with a very specific tag on it "made in china"...

This is a really well-made video! The only thing I would add, when figuring out your style, is to ask yourself: What pieces of clothing/accessories do I like from a specific style/era? Would I be comfortable wearing it?
For example, I have always liked the gothic-victorian-vampire aesthetic, when watching films. However, if I went out with a big long frilly black dress to work or to the grocery shop, this wouldn't be appropriate. So instead, I bought a loose-fitting corset top and a ruffled long skirt, which look more "down to earth".
It's similar with the goth style - I like the rebel vibes, but do not feel comfortable in short skirts. So I opt out for long ones with metal details instead.

Unfortunately, I am tall and curvy so the casual classy ish style that is trendy now is the one that works for me and has always worked for mr. It is kind of annoying to see everyone looking like this but - I LOVE and obsess over south Asian textiles prints etc. I collect swaths of fabric like khadi and cotton which is ideal for the humid climate here. I draw or take pics of stuff I like and give the fabric to my mom's seamstress and she brings my closet to life AT HALF THE PRICE. Also mega-custom. I also collect pieces from handloom and handicrafts markets. And I am darkly inclined so veer towards darkers prints, spiky ethnic jewelry etc. Most of my wardrobe is 5+ years old. With a lot of them reaching a decade very soon.
I have only one real leather item- strappy gladiator flats which I bought in 2017 in a Delhi market for less than 3 dollars. (250 inr). Idk how but it is still going strong- without any repairs or resoling or anything. Its has a cute fringe on the achilles heel side and it always gets compliments.

Lacan already dealt with this problem more thoroughly. Micro trends aren’t a recent phenomenon, you’re point of view on the past is just less nuanced than your point of view on current day culture. Also, “styling by body type” is still based on balancing the figure toward trendy shapes so it really doesn’t solve anything.

For my "personal style " I generally go with what I like. I don't buy stuff only because it's trendy at the moment. A sure thing I will buy would be jean, leggings, graffic tee, shorts, sandals as I live in a tropical island generally things that can be mix and matched and that require the least care and practical. Then my more going out clothes would be depending on where I go so I have a few nice dresses and party clothes that I rewearing . And my work clothes are just a nice pants suit and blouse. Then if I want to go shopping I buy stuff that I know I would wear and not just put in the closet and let it sit. And I go the ethical route too like did the garment get made by workers that was paid a decent wage and are the materials recycled or ethical sourced.

I did loose my style after getting a job. At first I wanted to look professional at the office (that was before 2019) and then the job began to drain me so much. I basically left the house in pants and a shirt and no accessories, although I was a goth girly (skirts, dresses, lace, bows, frills, elaborate hair, etc.). A pandemic and a job change later I started to get into my style again.
And just last week during an international business trip I stumbled upon a gothic clothing store carrying my fav brand (they had my fav dress that I bought almost 15 years ago!). So you better believe I do have an updated fall wardrobe now. 😀

@ZeldasMask "Clean girl" is simple or basic enough to stick around a while. That's why. Y2K is tricky because there are multiple Y2K strains. The bimbo look will not last long because it isn't doable in a professional setting or at many schools. The return of the mall Goth is questionable because malls don't have the influence they had even back in the early 2000s. Their nu-metal has been replaced with some kind of emo rap hybrid that isn't the scene kid's late 2000s "crunkcore" junk, but many listen to other genres that don't match the mood.
Aesthetics only last when a lifestyle is attached to it. Many aesthetics are just not subcultures. Coastal grandma isn't a real subculture. Without the concrete and associated rituals, ethics, music scene, and dominant places to socialize, there is no subculture. Even subcultures have their traditions. No subculture = no meaning. No meaning? No good reason to stick to a look for more than a week. It's just a skin for a person that lacks a solid identity, anyway.
That's why some girls shuffle through these aesthetics every other day. They'll say it's self-expression and experimentation. It definitely is partly that (especially if they are age 18 and under), but most people do eventually realize what suits them the most, depending on multiple factors. You can even pleasantly blend 2-3 styles once you know yourself well. The rest suffer from multiple style personality disorder and trend whoring (herd mentality and FOMO). They cling to anything and hold on to nothing.

Guys I wanted to let you guys know that it is the last days. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" If you're not in the word, you need to get into it. If you are, read more. The enemy is getting trickier and we need to strengthen our armor. God bless you all.

What’s wrong with dressing trendy though? I don’t subscribe to the idea that wearing the same style of clothing for 20 years necessarily means “you have your personal style”. Perhaps some people are just not interested in picking out what to wear, or that some of then just don’t ouch much thought into it. Also, isn’t it just boring to stick to the same style for years? People grow, people change preferences. Sometimes you find a trend and discover that you actually love it better than all other trends you have tried wearing. For me, my principle is balance. Balance between knowing what you like to wear as staples, but also not be afraid to incorporate trends to your outfit, and also not be afraid to try new trends here and there.

Besides vintage items, the oldest items in my wardrobe are 20 years old. They are teeshirts. Next in line is a 15 year old floral dress. Then a 14 year old coat. About half my war is from 2010. Most of my knickers are from before 2010. They are not the prettiest bug they still keep my bum warm.
All of those items are from fast fashion companies. Part of the problem is that people are sucked in and heavily influenced, unable to think for themselves. They cannot ask if they really need x item, they just buy it. The reduction in quality is another issue. Fast fashion used to be decent quality. The older fast fashion items in my wardrobe were not special or expensive, they were just from the stores people now love to hate (primark/Penneys, h&m, zara, supermarkets). Another issue is that people don't know how to look after their clothes, they would sooner bin something than fix it. I'm lucky that I don't follow any trend makers and I don't care about what is trendy. The sooner people start thinking about what they like and stop worrying about who watching them and what trends they should be following, the better.

Never really followed trends much:) just looked for things that looked pretty on me, felt comfortable, and/or provided a specific practical function:)
My favorite styles were late 90s and 2000s bubblegum pop styles when it comes to bright cool feminine colors that show off the hour glass figure and my bubbly personality(minus low rise jeans, those will never grace my wardrobe, i am not a thin hourglass, but muscular and very curvy, mixture of jasper and rose quartz on Steven universe), also love flipflopsXD leggings, spaghetti-strap tank tops, cozy long sleeve v neck shirts of soft polyester, and these are practical because they fit easily under my scrubs and I can go right to the gym afterwards, and lounge at home comfortably, also love anything ethereal/mystical because that spirituality married to my christian roots shows my hybrid beliefs, being a winter, i love silver/frosted silver/black jewelry when I go out for a night occasionally to karaoke with a bright fun club style, preferably with a bit of glitterXD also love stretchy sweater dresses , flowy sundresses, light ponchos, infinity scarfs, ankle socks if any socks, slip on shoes, wireless bras, scrunchies, then just a few worn shirts and pants for deep cleaning choresXD
not a fan of brown neutrals, boxy styles, high maintenance clothing, and dull grungy colors, big fluffy frills, fake/real fur, animal prints, non-stretch, button ups(big chest), or stereotypical 70s colors like burnt orange and chartreuse green.

Although trends can be fun to play with, your style is consistency. It’s what will make people respect and admire you. And you dont even have to have an extravagant sense of style, but if you are consistent people will see you are someone who stays true to your essence and what you like. And that inspires respect for anyone, bc it shows you are sure of yourself and is not willing ro compromise your authenticity for temporary things.

It’s rlly troubling watching family or ppl close fall n2 the trend cycle trap. Maybe it’s the autism & the fact I don’t make money yet that I usually don’t need 2 conform & I think many times b4 purchasing anything. I live in my own world & I mostly only get trapped in a trend when I’m very insecure. I presumed every1’s style was of expressing 1self while being practical & using things diligently. But nowadays that seems harder & harder 4 ppl.
Perhaps we need critical thinking & media literacy so we can step back n2 reality. Ppl have gotten so heavily n2 tiktok while I’ve never & it’s like it’s convinced ppl n2 partaking in these trends better than capitalist industries ever had b4 with advertisements.
My personal style isn’t separate from ongoing trends. In fact, my style is often a subversion of contemporary fashion. I still want 2 experiment & explore fashion in the capacity I can. I’m lucky when the trends match my interests !! But if the spirit of the trend damms what I love, I avoid it. (Yknow, like I’ve always loved lime green. Then Brat summer gave that colour a meaning that totally disgraced my authentic love 4 it so I don’t wanna b associated with that while the trend exists.). Ultimately, I’ve always been the centre of my fashion. The individual’s long-term primary concerns is always what matters most. If I’m styling some1 who wants comfort [e.g., my autistic friends], that’s what matters most in my choices, not OTHER ppl’s aesthetic ideals.

It’s rlly important 2 realise that fast fashion clothes were never made specifically 4 u. Nowadays, ur style is probably gonna b affected by ur skills in assembling an outfit & what actually fits u. Y’know, I cannot wear converse. The way they were made is not 4 me. My weight also frequently changes so knowing how 2 alter outfits & use padding is super important since I dont want 2 send away my clothes or spend more. Personal style is gr8ly determined by practicality 👏👏

7:16 this !!!! After a few minutes, and I knew I was an instant subscriber you deserve so many more followers for the quality of this content! I love and very much agree with your observations here, I feel like I’ve found my new fav fashion RUclipsr !❤
I’m almost 40 and still just as into fashion as when I was a teen , it’s really interesting how something from just a few years ago can look boring outdated over saturated, yet 12 years ago people are intrigued again . I’ve seen fashion just sway back-and-forth and not everyone’s always on the same page at the same time but, it really just boils down to what people see too much and what they feel like they haven’t seen in a while.

earlier this year i let zoomers influence me into buying baggy pants and they look horrible in my body so never again, i already know what suits me so fuck the trends

Loved this video. Especially about buying items that fit your lifestyle and physique. My grandparents taught me the importance of getting my clothes tailored and that I’d feel better in clothes that fit me better. One thing about building your personal style is when you look for specific items the quality is poor or they’re selling it for outrageous prices on second hand websites due to thrifting becoming so popular. At this point I’m gonna start making my own clothes

I loved the content until the dress for your body type part. What happen if I have a rectangular body and I don't want to focus on create a "waist" shape? Or what if I don't like the pastel colors of my "season"... I'm agree that trends are killing the personal style but all these image consultant practices are not always the best. Personal style is a journey, and yeah we should all stay away from social media, but I won't follow the tips from white man telling me what suits better for my body type and I say all this as a former image consultant I ran away from all when I realized that it was another way to restrict women.

I was so happy about this video until you started talking about dressing ‘flattering’. I understand that you’re not pushing it nor it’s ideals, but I find the term to usually mean ‘what’s gonna make you look the skinniest and closest to an hourglass shape’. I think fashion should be about fun and expression (which you clearly think as well), which means not really caring about your body, only the clothes.

    • @Jimmy94411

Flattering is correct. Unless you just want to be hideous for some stupid reason

    • @OfficialBlondeThoughts
      @OfficialBlondeThoughts  4 дня назад +13

I agree, it is unfortunate that “flattering” is often equated with “slimming” or creating an hourglass. That is why, I personally recommend systems like Kibbe, that promote wearing items that harmonize with your shape, not try and make you look like the current beauty standard. It’s all about accentuating what is great about your frame!

    • @Jimmy94411
      @Jimmy94411 4 дня назад +5

@@OfficialBlondeThoughts because slimming IS flattering. Not one single person wants to look fatter! Ignoring “flattering “ and just wearing whatever results in prominent fat rolls, muffin top, ham arms, and other hideous and disgusting displays of lack of self respect.

@@Jimmy94411 I’m sorry to hear that and while I don’t want to converse with you, I do wish you the best and that you heal and truly come to terms on why you think that.

I strongly disagree, while this may be the mainstream understanding of the word, it's not helpful and i dont think how it was meant in the video. Flattering to me means harmonizing, as mentioned, and i think for most people its gonna influence how they feel in their clothes. And flattering to me means fitting, like if you have a button shirt that kinda fits but is too tight on the bust and keeps gaping / even undoing itself its not gonna feel good and not gonna be flattering. Not about sliming, but about dressing for your body's needs. Another example could be, when younger i used to wear pencil skirts, that would kinda rotate on my body, i absolutely hated it, a read somwhere that commonly happens if you have combo of slim waist + skirt that sits on hip, below waist. I probably wouldnt figure that out myself, i switched to skirts that fit my waist size and problem solved...

My entire life, my mom preached the gospels of "Dress For Your Body," and "Classic Investment Pieces," and I've always stuck by her teachings. And thank God for that second once, because the rabid adherence to trend cycles practiced by retailers has made it so I never buy clothes in the last few years. I'm tall and lean but also short waisted and broad shouldered. Crop tops make me look like the walking reflection of a fun house mirror, and boxy cuts turn me into a shapeless wall. But good luck finding tops that are longer and more fitted lately. I got frustrated to near tears the last time I did an outlet run trying to find something in a store. There's seemingly endless places to shop, but they're all pushing the same thing; a total wasteland of ugly trends. So I'm just hunkered down with the clothes I have, consigned to buying nothing new until some kid on TikTok decides they like silhouettes that flatter my body.

I used to think I had small boobs and a wide waist. After finding my bra size and wearing clothes that are actually cut to fit me (byebye jeans) I realise I am cursed with the perfect curvy hourglass. Why cursed? Well for one it's hard to find clothes that fit (fluttery top with a high waisted A-line skirt to the rescue) and secondly because two years ago I realised 70% of my misery were actually gender dysphoria and I'm a trans man and you try looking like a man (not like a curvy woman wearing baggy clothes) with a Kylie Jenner style hourglass figure.
