I read your comment before watching the video and *DAAAAAANNNNG* if you weren't absolutely correct!! I wasn't expecting to love this so much -- I feel like Beatty could STILL play Tracy now!!!
WARREN is my fav. Star of all time. I was quite amused at the character Tracy mocking BEATTY the personality. I don't care how old he gets, BEATTY is still the man ! ! He may not have made alot of films, but those he has done are culturally significant . He's into Quality not Quantity. His films those he produced, directed wrote & starred in have already stood the test of time.
Yeah, it's all a strategy from an old contract he had arranged to keep the rights on the character: he didn't want anybody to make movies/series about Dick Tracy without him, so every 20 years (after the 1990 movie he made) he has to show up for a TV special acting like the character, so those appearances would be registered as "sequels". That's quite crazy and hilarious!
I love the obvious ADR line stating that Batman was co-created by Bill Finger. It's nice that at last we are aware that he was responsible for what we love about that character.
Absolutely love the Beatty film! If he went to the trouble to make this to keep the rights though, I wish he'd do something new with the character. I'd go see a sequel, ha.
That was great! Being that it's already five years old in doubt we will see a sequel but it would have been great. I loved the one from the 90s but by now I won't hold my breath for a sequel. This was cool though.
If Beatty can actually get a sequel made, it could possibly be a nice send-off for Beatty's acting career. Kinda like how Gran Torino was a nice send-off for Clint Eastwood's acting career (still a great and capable director though). The sequel should definitely acknowledge Tracy getting older, and the Kid/Junior would ideally have to be the supporting character who would physically take on whatever villains they decided to go with. Tracy himself could confront the villain/villains near the end of the film, but there should most assuredly be some build up to that where the Detective decides to close the case. One last time.
@@ZukoHalliwell Well, if he ever actually makes a sequel and it's good then it's not bad (which it could be good. It could be like the 1980's Batman comic series "The Dark Knight Returns" where taking place many years later, an old Batman is forced to come out of retirement for one final adventure. Something similar can be done with the Dick Tracy character in a very cool way) But as of now, with him holding the rights to the character and not doing anything with them, it's really bad for Dick Tracy fans that just want SOMETHING new (specifically a new movie) to come out already. To be fair, I did enjoy certain aspects of this 30 minute Dick Tracy special.
@@johnpenguinthe3rd13 In this day and age, it's rare to find a fan of an intellectual property that wants a new movie based on that property. Most people are like, "Leave my childhood alone" or something like that.
Hate all you want. This was a fun movie. It had a great cast, cool story, great scenes, etc. I would of loved see them do more. Unfortunately he's to old now, but I wouldn't mind seeing reboot. I love noir movies and we don't get enough of them. Especially with that comic/cartoonie twist.
That was nice, didn't know that existed. so here i am watching it 6 years after it was made. I loved Dick Tracy as a kid and its because of the Warren Beatty movie. it came out one year after i saw batman in theater. and Danny Elfman did the score for both movies. I dint see Dick Tracy in theater but watched it on VHS, i was 11 years old. It's actually the only Dick Tracy movie I've seen as of now, watching this makes me want to watch the old serials and old B movies. also Leonard Maltin is my favorite movie reviewer (i own all his movie guides from 1998- 2016) and i love Warren Beatty as an actor ( Bugsy, Bonnie and Clyde) a sequel would be perfect, i hope they eventually do make it. but it has to have the same girl who plays Tess Trueheart in it.
Wow. Seems you have an almost identical experience as me, seeing it on VHS when it came out, noting from such a young age that it was scored by the dude who did Batman's similarly awesome soundtrack. This and the film make me feel incredibly nostalgic, like "The Sandlot" film- just how they create a time onscreen that you wish you could live in.
Another reminder of how old I am. I used to actually read the Dick Tracy comic strips when I was a kid. I was not only pre-"VHS", I actually used to "dial" the telephone. And candy bars were a dime. Not the obscene dollar-plus they are now.
Beatty took HIMSELF out of movies the last 20 years.... And after watching the films he directed himself it's tragic thinking of all the films we DIDN'T get from him.
Totally agree that this is a bit odd, but I just love it nonetheless...I'm a fanatic about the 1990 film and it's cool to hear them talk about the old movies & serials.
I've been a Tracy fan all my life, but I think of Everette Sloane more than I do the other actors. I think Beatty's portrayal in this little special was light-hearted, but he's got some of the facts wrong, The wrist radio was discovered by Tracy in 1946 after he arrested Diet Smith, father of the inventor and owner of Smith Industries, in questioning of the murder of his business partner, so if Tracy HAD invented it in 1947, Gould would have beaten him to the punch. YOu know who would make a good Tracy? Kevin Conroy. I think of Batman's voice when I read the comics.
if this were the unofficial trailer for a DT sequel, it would have made considerably more sense. But as a stand-alone? It's just cult classic fun. And that's fine too. :)
I remember hearing a long time ago that he wanted to realise a directors cut of this great movie, but couldn't because of legal issues or something like that. I hope they do come out with the director's cut sometime if there is a possibility that there's one in a vault somewhere.
This is insane! Just to keep the rights this is what they did! Must've been concocted up last minute when his lawyer told him the rights are soon to run out. Decent attempt at a promo for the franchise as a whole I suppose, but still.. it comes off as very surreal.
Would love to see another Dick Tracy movie, but a Sequel would almost be pointless especially since all the Trademark Villains of the Comic Strips were killed off in the first one. Hopefully there can be a New Adaptation. In the meantime, I would love to see a Special Edition Blu-Ray of the Warren Beatty film with Behind the Scene Features and so on.
Actually the comics had a work around for that. Should one of the characters, mostly get killed off, then they would get replaced by a family member of the same name. Case in point if Pruneface got killed off, his wife or his kid would replace him as head of his crime family. Meaning if they ever did a sequel and Tracy already killed off most of the main members of Crime Inc, their kids and their wives would try to kill him and Junior.
26:36 anyone who says Batman is too predictable or Superman is too overpowered or "-Insert Timeless hero is boring for stupid reasons here-" Should listen to what Tracy is saying here.
Considering what a miserable bomb the big budget Dick Tracy film was, it is curious that they would put this thing together. There is one funny moment. When Tracy is asked about Warren Beatty's big budget Dick Tracy film, it is mentioned that Beatty starred in it, produced it, directed it, and wrote some of it. To this Tracy / Beatty says, "He certainly does not seem to have a low opinion of himself." Beatty is playing a joke on himself, as he was the notorious subject of the Carly Simon hit son, "You're so vain." Another easter egg is that Tracy refers to various criminals of the 1930s, including Bonnie and Clyde. In the popular feature film about the couple, Beatty played Clyde Barrow.
It wasn't really a flop at all, though - made over $100 million and got a bunch of Oscar noms; even if you think the movie itself is crap, I don't think the industry would regard it as a bomb.
@@misscleo3861 When it came out it drew a big audience, but most people hated it. It didn't win awards for script or any key elements but peripherals. +rangergrrrl I've been following the legal battle on and off for over a decade wondering if he would make it. as far as I know the rights were reverted to him after several court battles and it was reaffirmed in 2011. The 2011 court ruling was the final judgment as to who owns the right if mind serves me right. As far as I know he still intends to make a film. He looks good for 78, and I wouldn't mind that much if he plays it or hands it to another actor while he writes, directs and produces it.
Funny thing is Dick tracy is a property that for one Warren Beatty cannot even do much with anymore, like Lone Ranger a IP so stale that no one can squeeze any money out of it anymore.
If he wanted to do it for the money he wouldn't go through all the work on making it as like the comic strip in look alone. DT was barely relevant back when the movie was being made. Beatty did it because he was a fan of the character and wanted to see if he could do it.
I want a new DT film with Warren as director. He's simply too old for it today even tho he probably has the best handle on the character. Not sure who could play Dick tho. Maybe Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon Levitt or Josh Brolin, someone like that.
