His 4 seam fastball has below average horizontal and vertical movement in MLB. It’s his release point and velocity that makes it effective. His splinker has above average movement and is probably his best pitch.

That little five percent increase means the ball is in the air a meaningfully shorter time. But you’re so right. That release is nasty.

I think that is the reason why his velocity is more impressive than guys like Chapman, who can throw 105 in his prime, but would live around the middle of the plate. Hoping this guys arm holds up and he is able to create the blueprint for high velo starters who can also have long careers.

He’s an absolute machine. I was blessed to watch him in college, in a higher LSU fan. It’s something about that arm angle that hides the ball…. Similar to Aaron Nola.
I really enjoyed watching him play last year at LSU, my hometown team and what some people may not know is that when he transferred from the Air Force Academy his heater was running up to 92-93mph and he also played catcher. He was their best hitter, batted around .350 with power, led the team in homers but came to LSU and focused strictly on pitching (*LSU had a couple of decent hitters a year ago lol) and somehow found his fastball running up to 102mph and was all everything last year on his way to a championship and the 1st overall selection in the draft followed by former LSU teamate Dylan Crews, the 2nd overall selection in the draft. The first time two players from the same team were drafted 1 and 2, it's probably fair to say that the 2023 LSU Tigers were a pretty good team! Lol 😂

That's why Skenes has such an amazing combination of control and acceleration.
Y’all need to relax with the Tommy John talk. Skenes is 6’5” 250lbs. He touches 100 without putting himself under duress and he doesn’t throw a cutter. Those are two of the most contributing factors that lead to surgery. Over exertion and throwing pitches that are harder on the elbow than others
I've been watching the MLB since the early 1970s. Honestly, Skenes has a chance to cause a mania comparable to Fernando Valenzuela in the early 1980s. I hope and pray that his are/elbow will remain intact throughout the year. I have seen too many flame-throwers getting injured (Strasburg, Lincecum, Kerry Wood, Syndergaard, etc, etc.) and ended the career way too early.

He has the speed and power of a flamethrower, but he just uses his fastball to make them have to wait for it or to try to guess which ridiculous junk pitch he's going to throw. Dude, the pirates are almost 25 to 1 right now to win their division. Yes, they are 6.5 games back, but they have very good starting pitching. Skenes & Jones are a HELLUVA 1-2 punch. I mean, is it LIKELY that they'll win? No. But, it's hard to find 25-1's that even have a CHANCE.

As a Pirates fan... he is a monster. His stuff is some of the nastiest I've ever seen, his command/control is rough though. The first start was brutal, he was missing locations so badly but his stuff was so good it didn't matter. The second start was MUCH better obviously. He wasn't so wildly out of the zone on some pitches. He stilled seemed to have trouble elevating the fastball. Maybe I'm wrong because I haven't paid much attention to baseball in a decade because being a Pirates fan is rough. But with that velocity and movement... high inner fastballs are hard to hit and near impossible to make solid contact with. The catcher multiple times setup high and the pitch went low, was still nasty enough for strikes, but man once he gets control of that it's going to be disgusting. He seemed to get better with it in the 6th. He had a few fastballs he got in and up on hitters even though he appeared to lose some velocity. He went from 99-102 to 97-100 He's no Justin Verlander that's for sure. That man threw harder the deeper he went in his early career. I don't think there's much wrong with tossing 100 mph in the 6th though. haha
