Lots of discussion about the rider in the way in this vid, so I would like to channel it here in this comment feed to maintain the convo. Keep in mind the rider also had headphones in and I did manage to stop. Hearing a lot about me riding out of control, but that's not the case. There was no crash. The way I look at this is I don't merge onto the freeway blasting Metallica looking straight ahead and just think it's there problem... Common sense says we look before crossing anything: road, freeway, trail, whatevs. But I love a debate and know my opinion is just that; my opinion. And I respect all of yours. So, thanks for caring and tuning in. - Tony
You may not merge onto the free way listening to Metallica and not checking traffic but others do which is why people crash often. If you were on the free way going the posted speed limit on the far right lane (slow lane) and you see another vehicle merging onto the free way would you drive straight into him because you technically have the right of way? or would you use common sense change lanes flip him off for not checking traffic and avoid a near miss collision, or in your case not move and almost ride into him either way relax. This is a public trail people will always be in your space and not look out for other riders. use common sense and assume others do not see or in your case hear you.
I stopped Frank. Same way I'd do on the freeway before flipping them off. 😇 Also, are there slow lanes on MTB trails?
homeboy had head phones on..............
@@TheOutsiderMTB perhaps there might be a slow lane as we watched the guy walking his bike slowly Lol. Hey you used the freeway comparison first. Dont be a Karen just relax. Shit happens get over it. Every one agrees the guy is a dummy. It's your demeanor that has every one in a frenzy. Ride smart ride safe. Dont almost crash into another rider because they cut you off.
@@frank8907 Haha who's in a frenzy? Me replying to your comment is what the feed's about. He was walking his bike into the exit with headphones on. The freeway comparison is fair if it makes sense. I don't think yours does is all. Appreciate the feedback.
Lots of new and inexperienced riders on the trails these days.
And I don’t get that. As a new rider I want nothing to do with trails like this lol as sick as Tony makes it look, I enjoy having teeth.
So what, trail are for everyone.. young, old, newbie and or experienced... if you don’t want anyone on your way, then find a hard trail at a remote. But still with no guarantee.. as hikers lurks in evry corners of this SoCal canyons.
@@jonathandougherty3677 The first time I "rode" Car Wreck" I rode it because I couldn't make it up Mathis...LOL Good on you Jonathan for realizing this is not an easy trail.
Freaking scary
Agree
1:58 Mom I’m on the Outsiders youtube channel!!! So sick seeing you out there 😃
Hahah hell yeah Jack! Thanks for saying hello.
I appreciate your raw emotion.
That happens to me 3x a week with people being aloof on the trails. What I hate is this with oncomers...put on Mask, re-leash dog, then move out the way in that order. It's like just move out the way. Screw the other steps.
Dude thanks! I try to put the real deal in vids - crashes or being annoyed - whatevs. Appreciate that!
Isn't that the truth. I also hike. Dog on leash. I pull over for mountain bikes. When I am on the bike I am excessively polite to hikers. But keep the damn dog on the leash. And stay alert to what is behind and what is in front of you.
4:29 you can't be a real SoCal if you keep saying "highway". We've been through this before! No highways, we have freeways. "Take the 5, to the 405, to the 73, then exit at the first In N Out lol
Hahaha you’ll never take the east coast out of me.😉
@@TheOutsiderMTB My Mom always said highway...lol.. or parkway..turnpike...etc
The boys would appreciate this comment
He dropped anchor in a bad spot. By the looks of him, my guess is that he hasn’t been riding long, and may not have developed his situational awareness, yet.
it's a common failing. People get a full squish bike and think it will ride the trail for them.
An MTB very long or any type of bike, lol.
Don't be that guy! For me, the main trail issue is hikers wearing earbuds so they that can't hear anything. Bikers use bells on our local trails (Santa Barbara), and almost all the time everyone gets along. Most hikers thank me for the bell, and I always slow down to pass groups or dogs that don't know the trail etiquette. But several times I've come up behind hikers or joggers with earbuds, and no bell gets their attention. So I have to come up carefully alongside until they see me out of the corner of their eye. Most are friendly about it, but I think it's a dangerous practice on a multi-use trail, easily rectified with "open air" earbuds.
Hey the guy stoped in the middle of rock garden was @frank8907 😂 that’s why he is defending himself 🤣 excellent stoping skills Outsider ✌🏻
I think you mentioned a good point...Lots of hikers...and people just getting into bikes due to distancing...probably lost or confused on the trails if they are new to the MTB world.
Lmfao dude was definitely having flashbacks
awesome seeing you out there! i started riding these trails thanks to you
That's awesome!
Thanks for the shout out Tony!
Thanks for the support Rob!
Another great vid Outsider Tony Marinara! Just had my first OTB on RockIt last week 🤘🏽 have yet to hit Car Wreck but I think I'll wait until the new bike comes in a few weeks. Hitting those trails on a hardtail is tiring haha keep spreading the stoke 🤙🏽
Hell yeah Mark!
Man, another trail I will have to hitup whenever I get down to southern ca. Keep the videos coming, love the fact that you are breaking down the technical bits of the trail. I find it gives the viewer a more realistic view and helps deaden some of the go-pro effect.
Thanks! Love hearing that.
Shoutout to the hiker recording for you on car wreck! Cool too see stuff like that
Hell yeah - he was hyped to do it! Good stuff when that happens.
Im sure that dude at 4:05 is also one of our many excellent and courteous drivers out here keeping the 5 exciting!
Hahah
Local to Orange County. Tonight was bike maintenance and practicing. This weekend the family road up the Panoramic view above the Summit house and around the Brea Fullerton area. Thanks for all the great content, Tony!
Love that! Thanks for watching!
Outsider always making it look easy. The gnarly stuff on car wreck will get you wide eyed forsure
Timber Bell, I always ride multi use with one...
Love trails man. Too soon for me to hit those but maybe in a few more months. Thanks for sharing that with us!!! Glad you didn’t hit that dude with hearing problems 😂
So close!
I did this exact route today after I saw you do it. On Car Wreck, there was a hiker standing still in the middle of the steep section, talking on his cellphone, facing downhill, not paying any attention. I had to yell multiple times at him as I was coming down, and thankfully he got out of the way in time. Had I not seen this video, I might not have yelled as soon or as loudly as I did, now knowing that people don't pay as much attention as you think or can't hear as well as you might think. Could have ended very differently. Thanks for posting about this, it's a good lesson for everyone to see.
Close call - glad it worked out safely!
Ha! Perect timing for this video... Im heading there this afternoon to ride both of those.
Ive done Rock-it many times, but Car Wreck only once a few years ago on a 12 y/o Heckler. Cant wait to hit it with my Nomad and new skill set.
Thanks for the Videos always informative and entertaining!
Nice!
So I’ve been on and off the bike for many years. Early on it was cross training for motocross. Raced road bike criteriums as a sprinter for a few years here in So Cal. Got back on a Hardtail beginning of August , sold and bought a used slash a month ago, freakin love it. ( there’s a point coming here)
Building confidence up slowly at different trails in crystal cove etc, Floop, double loops at whiting blah blah.
Watched your video several times on Rock it, lynx, car wreck etc..
today was that day,
Rock it 🤙, back up was looking for Lynx, missed it and pushed on to car wreck.
First off that chute is gnarly. But today was littered with hikers at 9 am and that is super dangerous (as you know)
My first issue was right after the fence that goes left and then in to the right hand drop.
Two girls just froze in the middle ( no where to stop , no where to go OTB #1 ☹️
Regain my shit and realize my dropper post cable snapped 💥 send it down another 50 yards slight bling veer left , a group hiking up with kids, they freeze in the safe line ( for me) lean back and point it right, nope too steep and wicked , OTB #2 about 5 yards off the edge , gashed shin on a rock 2 inches long and a heavy bleeder. 🤬🤬🤬 squeezed it closed and wrapped with tape. Walked down the last 30 yards to a family picnic just beyond the car.
Limped my way out the rest of the way and climbed back out . 3 butterfly to keep it closed ( not visiting a doctor right now with Covid happening if I can avoid) . Confidence on that run will be shot for a minute.
Point is too many people out there right now with disregard for what it is. I’ll be back with reservations, but I’ll be back.
People shouldn’t be on those trails without 100% presence..
Lastly why the hell would anyone want to hike up that freaking trail !!!
Peace 💪💥🇺🇸🤙 thanks for the videos!! They’re inspiring.
Ps 55 yrs old next month , never stop pushing it !!
Thanks for sharing Craig. You had a rough go of it today for sure. Weekends are really scary at Aliso with all of the hikers. One of the reasons I wish they would dedicate some trails just for bikes they they do for hiking. Next time see if you can get out there during the week. Much less traffic. Feel better bud!

Wow cool trails!
Thanks! 👍
Just ordered some centrics. Also blind here and my current clip-ons are nerdy AF and make my glasses freaking heavy! Stoked to start riding in these. Thanks, Tony!
Nice!! I have a discount code in the link below the vid!
@@TheOutsiderMTB so today was the last day for their 4th of July sale, so got a little bit better of a discount going that route than the outsider 10% discount, haha. Lucky timing on my part, I guess! 😁
I think Ray-Ban sales are about to go up 💯😂.
Man, Car Wreck was the one trail that intimidated me the most when I started riding. Still does! Grateful for every ride down it without an OTB. 🙏🏼
Totally! Thanks for stopping by Adam!
Great job on CW!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for doing a video of this one. My friends have been trying to talk me into doing it.
Go for it!
Tony I fking respect you man! Video does not justify how gnarly and steep that trail is. I have to admit, I walked 90% of it, you just make it look easy asf.
Ahhhh thank you my friend. ❤️
Been waiting for this for a long time another good one👍
My brother an I were there this weekend we hit 5oaks, car wreck ,
had a really bad encounter with ground at stair steps so decided to hike back up and hit lynx
Nice!
Which is your favorite trail in aliso?
Nice video!!
Thanks!
If Tony say's it steep, it steep! I've done Rock it and lynx and Lizard and Stair steps. TNA has a steep at the bottom that surprised me and he didn't flinch. I have a feeling that car wreck is steeper. I need a Laguna trail progression check list to figure it out. Great Video!! Thanks!
Car Wreck is pretty steep. I'd say after your first run you feel more comfortable, but yeah it hits you in the gut. haha
I dont think any of those are steep. Car wreck is fast. It's not steep tho.
Man, I feel you on that rider. I try to be so aware of my surroundings and other people, not only on the trail, but it everyday life. So, when things like this happen it definitely bugs me more, especially when it becomes dangerous like this.
Feel that Ryan.
Top ride Tony. Car wreck looks superb. Hope you're keeping well over there? Bad drills from that guy on the trail...
All good Mark. Back at you buddy.
I missed a Key section of the Trail at 13:24, I haven't hit this trail yet, but I've been studying it. Right before the cut at 13:24ish you go left and do a drop, or right to bypass (which still looks gnarly).. What Gives? Anyways... thanks for the vids man, I really enjoy your style of trail video and they help me feel confident going into a new spot for the first time. Your routes always make sense to me. Keep up the good work my man!
Thanks Bryndon!
Awesome trail. Can’t wait to ride it. But, yeah, that guy is clueless. You wouldn’t pull onto a highway without checking if someone is coming. 🤦♀️ Also, in Amsterdam, where biking traffic is intense, you can get legit hurt for being clueless like that. Lol.
Exactly!
I live near Loma Linda and love riding behind Hulda Crooks. Just getting started mtbing and have been going there more and more often. They have some fun trails! One of my personal favorites is Sith.
Also, Outsiders: love the name.
Hope to see you out there!
Sounds great!
Have you tried Outlaw yet? That's on my list at Hulda, Just went out there one time, but I wanna go back.
@@bryndon Not yet, but im hoping next time I can hit it or caldera.
Why did we get a crotch shot on “Ray-ban”?
Just random editing! haha - not personal!
I had an instance similar to what you encountered. After that I went to the hardware store and bought a mini cowbell that makes plenty of noise. I didn’t get a ding bell because sometimes you don’t have a split second to reach over and ding. So the cowbell does it for me all the time. People giggle but they know I’m coming.
Haha good stuff Daryl.
Wow, that was a close call! You handled yourself a lot better then I would have, I would have gone straight into the bushes lol
Haha almost did!
That car must have flown off the side of the trail avoiding someone who didn’t hear them coming. Great vid👍
Thanks 👍
"Flashbacks" hell, he was tripping in the moment like real time.🤪 Glad it ended as well as it did, could have been way worse. Car Wreck, how apropos. Enjoyed todays ride, rock garden and all.👍🏼
Thanks Lee!
Guy shouldn’t have pulled over in the middle of the trail, but you came up on him pretty fast after calling “rider” definitely didn’t have enough time to react. Seemed like he pulled over to side to adjust something, and was going to mount back up on the middle of trail.
Lots of green horns on the trails we have them here on the East coast too. I guess they are everywhere? We have lots of 2 way trails you are to yield when descending to ones on the climb. Also on other trails lots of blind corners - you don't know how many fly around them like they own the trail.
That rock/rut section was horrific and you smashed it. It's crowded out there and at least you didn't wreck. Cheers Tony.
Thanks Dan!
Had that happen to me on sleigh ride. In the big steeper berm some brand new riders were there lucky I was able to spot them and slow before I got there but still don't stop in the middle of trails. Lol
Lucky!
Maybe you should use a bell?
Sure, but would you like listening to that in the vids? Also, this guy had headphones in so would not have mattered.
He should have looked back to see if the trail was clear. That rock garden looks intense
Glass Jars of marinara!! 😂😂😂
Thanks, great ride.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video ,I was there yesterday for my first time I did lynks 5 oaks and rock it it was a blast, I have to say that it’s much more gnarlier then it looks , there are rock sections and step down that are pretty big but you can’t even notice that in videos hahaha it’s crazy. Few times I said (oh shit) what is this now ?, but at the end it was a great day and ride thanks for sharing bud 👍🙏🔥
Good stuff and totally agree!
That trail is nuts...even to hike
Great video Tony. I’ve been dealing with shit like this since the whole COVID crap. So many new clueless riders now. One of my main riding areas (Soquel Demo Forest) it’s turned into a complete shit show
I’m riding there today.👍
The Outsider MTB enjoy...during the week you will be good. Hopefully they are done with the road closures leading into the parking
I would have yelled a bit louder than you did and more than once. Not sure if you were loud enough but he should have also been paying more attention.
He also had headphones in so... 🤦🏻♂️
Nice, I just did the same loop last week. After living here for a year and a half, I needed to climb the infamous Mathis!
Nice work!
Hey dude. love the videos. I live in the area and i am thinking about getting my first MTB. What type of bike would you suggest? I am looking at the Trek Marlin right now.
Rad check out the YT Jeffsy. Give them a call or stop by the showroom in San Clemente and tell them I sent you. 👊😉
@@TheOutsiderMTB Awesome will do! thanks!
Get you a bell , I got one for this exact reason and people seem to react well to it , some even thank me for alerting from afar , best $20 I have spent on amazon .
Dang Carwreck looks gnarly.
Excellent video. Unfortunately there is always the chance there will be a trail obstruction at the worst possible time and bailing will be painful but better than colliding with them. I find dogs off leash and groups of new hikers with kids to be the worst (Oaks on a weekend). They always will have someone jump in the worst place at the last second or obstruct the entire trail with a large group as they wander around aimlessly. I always use my bell when there are lots of hikers and it helps for the most part.
Unfortunately not everyone has experience on the trails or uses common sense. I always tell hikers in conversation it is better if you don't move if you get startled than to jump at the the last second thinking they are in the way. They have no idea we actually have a great deal of control and can ride past them safely and it is all about moving predictably.
Good call Fred.
I ride in Aliso Woods all the time, and Car Wreck is one of the hardest
Outsiders mount up!
💥👏🏼
I was out there hiking yesterday and amazed at the amount of people hiking on car wreck. Another example of why we should be able to ride unsanctioned trails
Yes. I'm always chocked they don't have biker only runs. It's the safest thing.
That looks like you have a oneup handlebar there ,how's it compare to the stock bars and did you go about dealing with knock block system? Cheers
You should watch some previous vids! haha - feels great- the stock ones snapped. 😉
Right, wrong or otherwise if your going to put any situation in someone else’s hands you’ll probably end up coming out on the losing end more times than not. Anyways great vids man...shit happens just gotta live and learn👊
This trail is very fun I recommend it
Wood canyon and Aliso is my home turf, and there are a lot of beginners and families. They just don't know trail rules. I ride with a bell to let hikers and riders know I'm coming and yell quite early and I just expect to brake early and be ready for anything. It's a pretty busy area, esp now a days.
Thanks for sharing!
Man the GoPro effect is strong with this trail. Looks fun! Not looking forward to climbing Mathis again though... How's it compare to the rock gardens on Rattlesnake?
This trail has sections that are much steeper. Rattlesnake is gritty but not the steepest.
Don't know whats worse Mathis climb or the schlub blocking Rock it. Way to bounce back and get positive!
Haha thanks Steve!
I go to Laguna/Aliso all the time. My fav trail network. With that said, I avoid Rock it, Car Wreck and Meadow's. I avoid Meadow's because there are way too many hikers and I tend to come to a complete stop on the turns to avoid crashing into someone.
That guy was in the wrong. Glad you avoided getting hurt. Pedal on, brother!
Thanks Kim!
I went through there on Sunday morning. Hikers were 6-wide across the roads. Most crowded I've seen it. I was the idiot bombing down Mathis on a gravel bike.
Haha
I remember back in the day before car wreck was a legal trail. (We called it Dodge)Shooting down it at night on a Schwinn high sierra hard tail with a mag light duct taped to the handlebars 😜
👊❤️
First thing I tell people when I take them out on a bike always make sure you can hear your surroundings and pay attention. If you fall move out of the way because a rider behind you might not always see you. The guy probably had headphones on and not paying attention glad no one got hurt but could have been a lot worse
He had headphones in. Yup.
What do you mean by legal trails? Like trails that are officially part of city parks and marked with signs?
Yes. There are illegal trails built by riders in the parks that are ticketed as well.
Hey Tony, Love the channel and content. Have a question, would you choose an "Entry level" full suspension over a hard tail with good components? Bikes in question are the Marin San Quentin 3, or the Marin Hawk Hill 2. Thanks for any feedback 😎🤟
I’d say go squish. I don’t know anything about those bikes though. Sorry James.😉
Thanks Tony!
I think riding in control is key in those situations. You were able to stop to avoid a bad crash. You might want to give a more manly yell next time. Sounded a little weak in the video.
Haha agreed. But he had headphones on so I doubt it would have done a thing.
@@TheOutsiderMTB Another reason to make sure you ride in a manner that allows you to take action even when others are not.
Agreed. I did stop. 👍
Next time yell "Respect my Authoritah!"
So how did it affect your depth perception when switching to glasses? I can't ride anymore without my glasses. I can see ok but my brain is about 3ft out of sync where I think my bike should be. A decent drop would kill me.
Stay tuned...
gota hop over that branch next to the car for the best line😎
Next time!
Lol u had me busting up when u ran into that guy. I know he wasn’t wearing headphones cas he knew u were behind him at some point or maybe he was. But yes people need to yield to avoid u crashing into them since its harder for the biker to avoid u. Still a funny and good video.
He actually was wearing headphones! haha
The Outsider MTB - dnt know how u can bike with headphones. The natural sounds of biking is everything
“Yo, Smokey is back here taking a shi$”
Was hoping you were going to ride 5 oaks, that is what is left of it after a trail crew DESTROYED the lower half!
Wow! Been seeing a lot of riders blocking the trails lately.. seems like they need to take some MTB etiquette classes before they take the trails..
Glad ur safe, sucks for your brakes tho..
Thanks! I usually don't get upset but to me this went beyond trail common sense. We all learned to look both ways when we were 5.
damn I have extremely sore hands when I descend, but I never make stops unless there is a turn out spot, and nobody is behind me.
How do you like the Remedy compare to the YT
It fits be better for sure. Needed a large in the YT.
Hey Tony, what chest mount is that?
Stuntman chesty.
I love this riding area you should try widow maker lol it’s true to its name sadly
Is that in Aliso?
Car Wreck's one of the best 'legal' ones, nice. And that dude was in the wrong, fasho fasho.
I think I've dealt with it every single time I've gone out since the pandemic happened, lot of new and inexperienced hikers and riders out right now. It's not a complete excuse though, why would sitting or stretching in the middle of a trail/path EVER be a good idea, and without even taking a second to make sure no one is coming., It's really not that hard.
Right - it's common sense not even experienced bike knowledge.
Seen a rider get seriously hurt because ppl block the trail on a descent at the Fullerton loop...hard to break when your going downhill and need to come to a full stop
Stay golden, outsiders!
Woo hoo!
I barely heard you. You've got to scream. Scare them out of the way. LOL!
Headphones. 😐
U got to ride rocky peak man. You will have a blast
I've ho The Grudge. Good one.
Hey brother. Is that a GoPro fusion on your chest?
Nope hero 8.
I agree with you this guy was in the wrong. Simply being aware of his surroundings would have solved everything. Move B, get out the way... I've seen other youtuber's going down that rock-garden. Dude you pinned it, I'm impressed. 👍👍BTW Love Pip's lots of personality.😁
Haha thanks! Pip's the best.
Can these trails be done on a plus hardtail?
Yup.
@@TheOutsiderMTB Perfect!
Had a similar issue at greer yesterday with a runner. Headphones blaring and me yelling ahead and come around a corner and middle of trail full stop 🤦♂️
Covid has created alot of new hikers and mountain bikers. I got no issue with that. Problem is they dont understand trail manners/rules.
Agree with this.
This is what I found on Car Wreck.
"The car wreck is a 1946 Dodge 5-passenger coup. In 1946 they sold for between $1,200-1,700, depending on how fancy you went. Innovations on this 1946 model include electric wipers and replaceable oil filters.
How did the car get here, in the middle on nowhere? There’s no official answer, but it’s speculated by local historians that it ended up here in the 1960s. At the time, the dirt roads in the hills around Laguna Beach were popular spots for pop-up hippy concerts and hangouts. The likely scenario is that this Dodge was in the hills then and got washed down into the canyon during one of the bigger flash floods caused by heavy rains. That’s the theory, but no one really knows for sure."
One of the best comments I've seen. Thanks for that Jeffrey!
Yeah man, sadly a lot of new riders/hikers dont have a grasp on trail etiquette. I almost hit this lady cause i was coming down a single track in aliso woods and she just stared at me, airpods in, while i was screaming at the top of my lungs. Luckily i was able to skid out without hitting her. Nice riding tho!
Damn man.
Glass marinara jars 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 what's that chest harness you're wearing?
Haha yup - the chesty stuntman.
