I have this strong impulsion to hear and hear and hear the word of God over and over and to memorize bible verses. I came across the gospel last April thru some videos of Ray conmfort. Ever since then I question stuff at church I got into learning all these religions and now is learning doctrine. I get this type of fury when I hear verses put out of context at church or when preachers from outside come to preach. That drives me to learn more. At this point I don’t know what to do with these information when I do have it all in paper. I love sharing the gospel and also feel driven to go out and wanting to share it. I can’t wait for this cold to leave so I can go outside and share. I’m unsure if it’s what they call first love or if it’s a calling. In the mean while I’m going to finish watching all these videos, equip myself and keep sharing gospel. God bless
Same here. I knew the gospel but, in pieces. Watching Ray Comfort share it with strangers and using his video recordings to teach others how to share it, had made me realize how those pieces were of the whole of the gospel. From there, it led me to learn way more. :-)

No it does not... that makes no sense, we are born again because of our faith in Christ and His work on the cross, we are given the new heart and the indewlling of the Holy Spirit when we believe... once we have believed the gospel we are sealed by the Father, through the Son with the Holy Spirit

I took courses entitled "Expository Preaching," but it was false; the "Northern Baptist Lloyd Perry method is topical with some exposition. It focuses on a propostion, asks a question of the prop & uses keywords for the main points -- but is it not exposition = having the sermon follow the contours of the passage.
This is like an intro. No real mechanics in this. But for good reason. You need a gut check on something like this before you dive into something so powerful.

I love these types of videos. Can anyone help me out with something? I hear and read a lot of preachers say " carried the idea of ________" as Dr. Lawson does at around the 54:15 mark. I have heard/read it for English, Hebrew, and Greek words. Is there a certain book or set of books from which this comes? Almost every preacher/writer uses the exact same phrase "carries the idea of...." (I know he says the Oxford-English dictionary here, but they have it for Hebrew and Greek as well)

I have been told that the word preaching is derived from a Latin root "to stab or "to thrust". However, I have been unable to locate any primary sources for this claim. Any suggestions?

Laskarides Well, I think that's what you receive if you actually "take" or audit the class. That's why people attend colleges and seminaries and pay for them, it isn't just to get the diploma. It is to get the teaching materials, listen to the lectures, have access to the professor after hours, and also take the exams. If someone pirated all if that and posted all the materials, that would be as bad as stealing. Sign up and see if you can audit the class online.

Yes, one can do an expository sermon on a whole chapter or even a whole book, although the points will be broader and more of an overview. It's still better to pick smaller portions (however, large portions have their value as well).

I don't know where he spoke about the topic, but maybe I could be of some assistance. In my experience, the evidence of a true believer in Christ is that they hate sin. Period. You began to see them actually mourn over the sins they commit and how this clearly contrasts with their past behavior. Also, further evidence is continual confession of sin, repentance, and conformity to sanctification. Obviously, we can't get a sneak peek into their heart, but the external evidence is quite compelling. A clear decrease of improper language, impatience, and inconsideration. And when asked why they are going through all of these drastic behavioral changes, the answer should solely be because of Christ and the dislike of sinning against Him. You have yourself as a model believer. Why do you still believe and continue in the faith? Because of the Holy Spirit within you that empowers you to obey God and deny self. Even when you fall away, you come back with godly sorrow and repentance. That's completely involuntary and not a power of your own. The evidence of a true Christian is that we are compelled to serve God, even when our flesh is compelled to serve satan. I love you very much, God bless
Hi @SnapCracklePapa, perhaps you've already found the answer you were looking for, but I figured I would toss in some extra as this is something I've struggled with significantly as well. The book of 1 John is all about tests of how we can know if we are in the faith. Also, there is a section in Romans 8: [Rom 8:14-16 ESV] 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. If you are led by the Spirit of God to be obedient to his word and have the Spirit crying out to God the Father within your heart, that is the greatest sign that God gives us of our adoption. I don't know of & never sat under any preacher who preached expository sermons. J. Vernon McGee is the closest I have heard, but he is a dead Radio preacher.
My grandfather, who lived during the 30s, 40s, etc., told me that "church," as the community saw it, was entirely different than it is today. His pastor was paid very little and worked as a handyman. The church did preach, but did also REACH out to the community and not just in words. The poor were given food. Some had home repairs done. Unemployed guys would get some work until they got a better job. He said that the community and the church were integrated together. People respected Christianity and many came to the Lord. We're not washing people's feet any more. Preach all you want. Talk about it all you want. People in this country are tuning out because we're preaching but not reaching.
Needs of low income brothers and sisters go unmet b/c they don't know who at church to talk to and the pastor and elders of most larger churches are too busy for them. Or when they leave message or even email, they may go unanswered for weeks. The gov't/world's systems taking care of folks has almost relieved the church of her duties. Way back when it was said "Look how they love each other". 30's and 40's as you said was an entirely different era. Churches were mostly smaller and everybody knew each other. Pastors would often mention someone needing a little help. Now days, you go to church and won't even sit by the same person week to week. Small groups help...but how often are people directed to them? How often are the group leaders introduced or do they just flash on the screen overhead?
Am I the only one feeling like seminary courses seem more like sitting in on sermons at church rather than course content for rich discussion, equipping, and growth in my capabilities? I am wondering as a prospective student how is this any different from listening to a series of sermons on preaching on youtube? I felt like the "lecture" portion was limited and only got started at 55mns pt.

Same here. I knew the gospel but, in pieces. Watching Ray Comfort share it with strangers and using his video recordings to teach others how to share it, had made me realize how those pieces were of the whole of the gospel. From there, it led me to learn way more. :-)

No it does not... that makes no sense, we are born again because of our faith in Christ and His work on the cross, we are given the new heart and the indewlling of the Holy Spirit when we believe... once we have believed the gospel we are sealed by the Father, through the Son with the Holy Spirit

I took courses entitled "Expository Preaching," but it was false; the "Northern Baptist Lloyd Perry method is topical with some exposition. It focuses on a propostion, asks a question of the prop & uses keywords for the main points -- but is it not exposition = having the sermon follow the contours of the passage.

I love these types of videos. Can anyone help me out with something? I hear and read a lot of preachers say " carried the idea of ________" as Dr. Lawson does at around the 54:15 mark. I have heard/read it for English, Hebrew, and Greek words. Is there a certain book or set of books from which this comes? Almost every preacher/writer uses the exact same phrase "carries the idea of...." (I know he says the Oxford-English dictionary here, but they have it for Hebrew and Greek as well)
Where could one get all those 13 notes question? Mark. I really even though I'm not a seminary student,. I am looking to plant a church and I would like to look at these notes

It is EXTREMELY hard to find, HOWEVER, Grace Community Church has a book store on campus and I called from Mt. Pleasant Michigan and ordered a copy!

Laskarides Well, I think that's what you receive if you actually "take" or audit the class. That's why people attend colleges and seminaries and pay for them, it isn't just to get the diploma. It is to get the teaching materials, listen to the lectures, have access to the professor after hours, and also take the exams. If someone pirated all if that and posted all the materials, that would be as bad as stealing. Sign up and see if you can audit the class online.

Can you expository preaching on a whole chapter such a I Tim 3?
Yes, one can do an expository sermon on a whole chapter or even a whole book, although the points will be broader and more of an overview. It's still better to pick smaller portions (however, large portions have their value as well).

He mentions somewhere, I think in this lecture, that there must be signs or evidence that someone is a Christian. Is there anywhere someone could point me to his teaching on this topic? Thank you, I will be forever grateful as I struggle greatly with this topic.
I don't know where he spoke about the topic, but maybe I could be of some assistance. In my experience, the evidence of a true believer in Christ is that they hate sin. Period. You began to see them actually mourn over the sins they commit and how this clearly contrasts with their past behavior. Also, further evidence is continual confession of sin, repentance, and conformity to sanctification.
Obviously, we can't get a sneak peek into their heart, but the external evidence is quite compelling. A clear decrease of improper language, impatience, and inconsideration. And when asked why they are going through all of these drastic behavioral changes, the answer should solely be because of Christ and the dislike of sinning against Him. You have yourself as a model believer. Why do you still believe and continue in the faith? Because of the Holy Spirit within you that empowers you to obey God and deny self.
Even when you fall away, you come back with godly sorrow and repentance. That's completely involuntary and not a power of your own. The evidence of a true Christian is that we are compelled to serve God, even when our flesh is compelled to serve satan.

Hi @SnapCracklePapa, perhaps you've already found the answer you were looking for, but I figured I would toss in some extra as this is something I've struggled with significantly as well. The book of 1 John is all about tests of how we can know if we are in the faith. Also, there is a section in Romans 8: [Rom 8:14-16 ESV] 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. If you are led by the Spirit of God to be obedient to his word and have the Spirit crying out to God the Father within your heart, that is the greatest sign that God gives us of our adoption.

My grandfather, who lived during the 30s, 40s, etc., told me that "church," as the community saw it, was entirely different than it is today. His pastor was paid very little and worked as a handyman. The church did preach, but did also REACH out to the community and not just in words. The poor were given food. Some had home repairs done. Unemployed guys would get some work until they got a better job. He said that the community and the church were integrated together. People respected Christianity and many came to the Lord. We're not washing people's feet any more. Preach all you want. Talk about it all you want. People in this country are tuning out because we're preaching but not reaching.
Needs of low income brothers and sisters go unmet b/c they don't know who at church to talk to and the pastor and elders of most larger churches are too busy for them. Or when they leave message or even email, they may go unanswered for weeks. The gov't/world's systems taking care of folks has almost relieved the church of her duties. Way back when it was said "Look how they love each other". 30's and 40's as you said was an entirely different era. Churches were mostly smaller and everybody knew each other. Pastors would often mention someone needing a little help. Now days, you go to church and won't even sit by the same person week to week. Small groups help...but how often are people directed to them? How often are the group leaders introduced or do they just flash on the screen overhead?

Am I the only one feeling like seminary courses seem more like sitting in on sermons at church rather than course content for rich discussion, equipping, and growth in my capabilities? I am wondering as a prospective student how is this any different from listening to a series of sermons on preaching on youtube? I felt like the "lecture" portion was limited and only got started at 55mns pt.
